mk9750 You wrote the boy who is a year younger than the rest, just e mailed the SM and me to admit to using the axe on the tree This statement has my BS sensor on alert, it seems too convenient. Just make sure that he did do it and was not put up to the confession by the "older" scouts. Good Luck.

evmori You said Sure you would need rules for each rank. Now you said one set of rules would work. Do you think the same rules could apply for Webelos and Tigers? I thought you said at one time that there are to many rules within the BSA, but I could be mixing up posters. I never said you did not follow the rules either, just for clarification. fotoscout Yep, just like roundtable where everyone is right, yet if you pull out a reference most of the experts just shrug it off to it just a book or a suggestion.

fotoscout Thanks for the laugh the first thing in the AM! Can a opinion re WRONG? Apparently if it is different than yours. Is my vote WRONG also? I think you need to reread my post. I did not say it was or should be like patrol camping, I stated that is what some leaders would turn it in to. How can you state that den camping IS NOT like patrol camping, there is no thing as den camping today within the BSA? you where WRONG. Now what is the Law of the PACK. (notice it does not say Den)? The Cub Scout follows Akela. The Cub Scout helps the pack go. The pack helps the Cub Scout grow. The Cub Scout gives goodwill. evmori more rules? I never expected for you to say they more rules would be okay. I thought that you thought that there where to many rules already. I think there are to many rule already, but I understand why they are there. fotoscout I am leading at this point I have 3 WRONGS to your 1.

evmori I say NO, because it would create another list of rules. Rule would have to be written for Tigers, Wolves, and Bears, the rules would have to be somewhat different for each age group for it to work. As I read through these posts, I see that leaders are bending the rules rather than following the BSA program. Could you imagine how the rules would be bent if there where more rules? These scouts are not ready for patrol camping, which is what some people would take as den camping. OBEDIENT A Scout follows the rules of his family, school, and troop. He obeys the laws of his community and country. If he thinks these rules and laws are unfair, he tries to have them changed in an orderly manner rather than disobey them. Why do you say YES?
-
I would have the current SPL select the SPL for the week, and explain to him that even though he will not be there he will still be responsible for the troop, through the leader he selects. My reasoning for this, is that it is still his troop, his responsibility does not stop just because he is not there.

Vote here: The Den Campout rule should be amended to allow for a conditional Den overnighter? NO

I know I should not do this but at least I did not say I would ignore him and than not ignore him. Do you walk into a mechanic's shop and tell them what to do? Why yes I do, I know my vehicles a lot better than someone who has never driven it. Do you walk into a doctor's office and tell them what to do? Sometimes. Hey doc I got that sinus infection again, can you give me a script for some antibiotic. paedogogy, is this a word you made up? Cause it ain't in Websters. You don't know what virtue was! What was it? I like to think more along the lines of what it is, not what it was. How many times do I have to say this: Leon Podles states emphatically that Feminism is dangerous and is a heresy. 99,999 times. Leon Podles is a quack. I have proved my points. You refuse to read. If a teacher does not provide learning, you cannot say the student was at fault. rat's patuty what the heck is this another one of your made up words.

Marty_Doyle When asked about OGE singing, Outdoor Thinker only will say that she tone deaf, which makes it hard for her to tell if OGE is a good singer or a really good singer. She was pretty smooth with that answer! I do miss her posting here, she seemed to have a really good ideas and thoughts about the BSA.

If you really wanted to know why a Cub Den are not suppose to camp, why are you spending your time asking here? Call or email your DE or SE or someone that may have or be able to get the BSA answer for you.

MORE ON SOCRATES It was common knowledge among the ancients that Socrates, in his late teens and early twenties, had been the lover of his teacher, Archelaus. Xenophon has Diogenes Laertius say, In his youth he was much given to sensual love which was later supplanted by zealous intellectual work. And Socrates replies, Perhaps I may be able to help you in your search for good young men since I am given to love. For whenever I terribly love men I strive with my whole heart that, while loving them, I may in turn be loved. On the eve of his death he spent the night with a young male prostitute, wonder what that was about?

Need advice on parent involvement with other troop
dan replied to 585sm's topic in Advancement Resources
585sm You said My complaint is that all of our scouts should be offered the same opportunity. In scouting not all scouts will get the same opportunities. Which is most of the time a good thing. Around here troops that do merit badges at meetings are considered Eagle Mills. Do you know that becoming an Eagle is not one of the goals of the BSA? -
Wheller you wrote Here you are a Scoutmaster, and you have publicly stated that in so many words, that you are not going to tell boys "Quit yourself like a Man". Is this the truth? No I am not a Scoutmaster, never said I was. I do not have a clue what Quit yourself like a man, even means, so no I would not say that to anyone. Wheeler, you do not have a clue what leadership is. Leadership is not being a tyrant, like you suggest. With force you can make someone do just about anything, but a good leader is able to lead without fear. A good leader is also a good teacher. I am not saying all teacher are good leaders, though. What do you think you taught those 2 scouts at the library, when you asked them if they wanted to be a man? I bet they thought you where trying to pick them up!

Need advice on parent involvement with other troop
dan replied to 585sm's topic in Advancement Resources
Welcome to the campfire! You are not going to like the feedback! Merit Badges should not be part of a troop meeting. If you look at the troop meeting plan within the SM handbook you will see that there is no place scheduled for merit badges. Look at the Boy Scout Handbook and see what if says about merit badges and how a scout should earn the merit badges. Stick around if you can weed out the bad stuff this is a great resource for you to lean on. -
To ask a scout if he wants to be a man or not does nothing for that scout. He will grow up to be man no matter what. But I beleive the BSA will make a better man out of him. Now take these scouts out in the wilderness/woods and watch them cook a meal over a open fire and sleep in a tent when it is 40 degrees and raining. And you will see these scouts gain more and more confidence campout after campout, it is joy to watch these scouts grow. When a scouts starts teaching other scouts to do what he has learned within the BSA program you no longer see a boy, you see a boy that has grown into a teacher with the ability and confidence to train others in what he has learned. While he is taking a break, I get to walk up to this scout and say, GREAT JOB showing Timmy Tenderfoot how to tie those knots! And this scout grows some more. Go along with some 13,14,and 15, 16 year old scout on a High Adventure trip, talk about a scout growing in a short time. After hiking 50 miles in a week, sleeping in a tent for a week. Going back to school to give a speech in front of a group of peers, that spent the summer in front of the TV, sure has to be a lot eaiser. Do you see how the BSA is turning these boys into leaders?

My questions should have been: If a parent is a committee member, can they be a member on the BOR, for their son?
-
where does it say that parents of the Scout cannot sit on a BOR?
-
Remove him Not Now RIGHT NOW. If a leader said this to my son I would be on the phone with the SE. (This message has been edited by dan)

Wheeler Yes but how about that Jack Daniels? Have you witnessed the mouse that talks and drinks?

Tents will be provided, you must provide you own METAL tent stakes, 10 per person??!, seems like a lot, if you are tenting 2 per tent, some are used for the rain fly. Or you can take you own tents. List of items to be provided by the crew. Tent Stakes 10 per person 2-3 Collapsible wanter containers, 2.5 gal each 2 one qt. fuel bottles and funnel 2 or 3 backpacking stoves, with separate fuel tanks 1 crew first aid kit Duct tape Spices optional Padlock for crew storage Waterproof ground cloth 1 per tent 3 fifty 1/8 nylon cord Sunscreen Insect repellent not aerosol 2 to 3 water purifiers/filters You should be receiving a packet of info with all of this info. Prehike is tomorrow. What state do you live in that you are thinking of driving? The GTSS say to limit the amount of driving per day for safety. Since we are from the flatland of Illinois, we are going to try to go out at least 2 days early to try to get use to the altuitude.

He said he had an 1 1/2 conversation with the mom of Scout #4. She wants to know why he hasn't advanced. She wants to knowShe did not appear to be interested She didn't want to hear She didn't understand Gee I wonder why the scout does not take responsibility for himself!I would suggestMANY SM conference. Meaning I would ask the SPL or any other leader whenever they see one of these scouts doing something wrong, have the Scout go see theSM, so the SM can have a conference with him. It could be the same SM conference over and over, just as long as the Scout is sitting with an adult and discussing the issues. I have to believe after awhile they would say, Gee if I do this or that I will have to get sit with the SM again for THE discussion. Maybe this will make them think about their actions or it could possibly mean they will leave, but at least you can say you tried REALLY HARD.Please let us know how it unfolds.

Eagle54 You will be going on the trail the day we leave! This could really be something that the scouts remember! Being at Double H for the first year! If it gets a popular as I think it will. If you need more info on transportation let me know, they have 5 bus lines listed in the packet I have, if you do not have these let me know and I will get them to you. First prehike is Saturday, starting out with a easy 8 miler.
