  1. OK, show of hands. How many people take flares out into the wilderness? Maybe that's how some scouters have 75 pound packs at Philmont (I assumed it was dutch ovens). To me, the MB should be based on stuff you'd typically take as part of the 10 essentials. Stuff a scout would likely have.
  2. The merit badge is Wilderness Survival. You're not going to have flares or a flare gun in the wilderness.
  3. While it technically meets the requirement, I think it would be better to steer the scout toward something they are more likely to have on them in the woods. Not sure if the Guide to Safe Scouting covers shooting flare guns, but I'm going to say probably not a good idea.
  4. Until this year, I only got the Mile Swim patch. During pandemic, I managed to get the Social Distancing, Toilet Paper Gathering, Mask Wearing and Weight Gain merit badges.
  5. Thank you! That is close to what I needed to do. I had to go to My Dashboard and then Administration to get the rest of the way. Oddly, Scoutbook insists on giving me the mobile version of the site even on my laptop. Like you, none of the counselors in my troop, including me, are in the report.
  6. I'm still not seeing where to find the MB Counselor list in Scoutbook.
  7. It's My Profile, then My Positions. I'm listed as a Scoutmaster and Merit Badge Counselor, but none of my merit badges are listed. I guess they didn't add them.
  8. Miracle Max: Beat it or I'll call the brute squad! Fezzik: I'm on the brute squad. Miracle Max: You ARE the brute squad. I am the Scoutmaster. I'll check with our CC. She knows everything.
  9. We only recently switched to Scoutbook, and I can only assume it was designed by sadists. It is the most unintuitive pile o' poop I've used in a long time. And yes, I tempered that to be more scoutlike. My actual thoughts are much harsher. Where can I go to get a list of the merit badges BSA currently says I'm a counselor for? I've poked around my.scouting.org and scoutbook, and I can't find anything. Supposedly, I can find counselors in my area on Scoutbook, too, but that's a mystery as well. I'd appreciate some help. Thanks!
  10. I've had several scouts, including my own son, who were much more afraid of open water than a swimming pool. It's tough when you can't see beyond the surface. Doing a test under pressure can have the same result, I'm sure. I try to tell them this isn't like a school test. You can keep trying until you succeed. There's no penalty for not succeeding the first time. We just want you to be capable in the water so you're safe.
  11. I'm told "ambient" if there were native polar bears in the area.
  12. It says File at the beginning, so I assume it's file footage. Scouts are supposed to be obedient. But we know reality is that there will never be a case where 10-17 year olds are perfectly obedient all the time. However, I'd bet the scouts did a much, much better job than at any massive protest or recent parade.
  13. This is a very valid point. Here in VA pools CAN open with those restrictions. Our neighborhood pool did, but many others are closed all summer, including all county pools.
  14. Some people were critical on social media and some state officials visited the camp. I have to wonder how many of them were critical of protests and parades that had zero screening, zero social distancing and while many wore masks, that was not enforced. https://www.wvnstv.com/top-stories/state-leaders-address-covid-19-concerns-at-summit-bechtel-reserve/
  15. If you can meet the rules, I can't see why you can't use your pool. Keep in mind, unless you have a really big pool, you'll need them to do more laps to meet the distance requirement. https://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/gss/gss02/
  16. I didn't have enough PTO to go, but I went for pickup. Our troop did the merit badge camp when Powhatan canceled. The adults were extremely impressed with the precautions taken by the camp. Any activity where distancing wasn't possible was canceled. The troop was treated like one family. Merit badges had distancing and masks. Dining was separated. Everyone tented solo. Not a single participant reported ill. Any illnesses among participants is to be reported to Summit over the next 2 weeks. There were only 270 people there for the week. 700 are expected this coming week. We
  17. One of our ASMs, texted me this, today. So far, all the reports I'm getting are extremely positive. They were issued all brand new tents and cots. Very high praise for all the staff, too.
  18. I think an organization in bankruptcy shouldn't spend a lot of money on something that will have little to no impact on membership. If this were an idea where the benefit exceeded the cost, then consider it. I personally don't see it.
  19. I've never encountered anyone in person who ever commented on the title in any way, positive or negative. I get the impression that the vast majority of people give it no thought beyond it identifying who holds the position. Maybe people have felt otherwise but haven't spoken about it. It doesn't seem to me to be worth the time and money to change to something else.
  20. Do I now have to call the master cylinder on my vehicles the "brake fluid pressure thingy" now? I might be good with being called El Jefe.
  21. I'm in Fairfax County, VA, and the school district sent out a survey with 2 choices for the upcoming school year. 2 days a week in school and lots of homework or all virtual classes, which was a disaster this past school year. It's sounding like the elementary school we use for meetings won't be available, so we will have to scramble to figure out what to do.
  22. But the public health experts told us the protests were fine.
  23. That is the way they described Summit. It's basically a self-contained community. Our crew was only to stop for a bathroom break. They took bag lunches. They all had to take their temps for 5 days leading up to arrival. Any adults who were just drivers had to remain in their vehicles at dropoff. They will have no interaction with the residents outside of camp. The changes they made to prevent spread of Covid-19 at camp are extensive. Little time will be spent inside. Virginia is about to go to phase 3 of reopening. If massive outdoor gatherings with zero social dista
  24. For now, but not much longer. They apparently rejected my proposal of Geddy Lee High School.
  25. Thanks. We're actually from just outside DC in Springfield, VA, but since I've been in the troop, we always went to Ottari. This year we were going to change things up a tad and do Powhatan. While this part of Summit is a merit badge camp, it is not exclusively that. There are many activities for scouts to try. I'm of course hoping everyone comes back healthy and telling stories of the great time they had. I hope they all learned valuable scout skills, particularly our new scouts. My son and our Troop Guide worked with most of them to get their Scout rank (or most of it). I'm thankf
