  1. I remember when I was optimistic and enthusiastic,.
  2. What's more. Circle 10 is just down the road from National BSA.... this could have been communicated like over lunch meeting up half way between
  3. Official response from Circle 10 today. UPDATED CUB SCOUT CAMPING GUIDELINES As many of you have already seen, the National Office recently made an addition to the Guide to Safe Scouting, specifically “Cub Scout pack unit coordinated camping is limited to single overnight experiences.” The Circle Ten Council has been reviewing this new information and seeking clarification. With this change, if a Cub Scout pack goes on a unit campout, you are limited to one-night events only. If you go for more, you will be out of compliance of the Guide to Safe Scouting.
  4. SM took IOLS and Cub Specific Training in 2016. Absolutely nothing since then other than YPT. Same SM that has not had a real PLC since he started a year ago. Also lets us know when and where campouts will be, sometimes two days before the event. He NEEDS the training. Committee members just havent done it and they dont have years and years of experience. Some are the same that suggested to me and another leader we just plan the meetings for the Scouts because kids cant pay that much attention and they want to play.
  5. I am the CC for two Troops. Recently I have been checking on our leadership training and found that a few Committee Members and the SM have not completed their Position Specific Training, SM after a year hasn't even attempted. So, the I guess guideline is that this training is supposed to be completed within 30 days of the application being accepted or something to that effect. I am going to bring this up in the next Committee Meeting and strongly suggest everyone gets caught up on the required training for their position. I am even going to give 30 days get it done. What
  6. The issue of "overnight camping" and how many nights are permitted under GTSS only applies to the Cub Scout Program. It has no bearing on Scouts BSA
  7. I am not sure its that easy. When they let her do her donations, there is a website with approved charities to choose from. If its not on that list, they won't match. You know... a corporate thing.
  8. With our Troop fees figured in, it's $415 a year for our family. Before trainings, MB fees, camp fees, all the stuff I buy for the Troops and don't ask for reimbursement. And my wife's company matches charitable donations, so FOS got $500 from us this year.
  9. Looked at the FB comments just a few minutes ago. Saw a comment from the Circle 10 SE that he is communicating with National to find out about this....
  10. Well... the "single" part didnt used to be there. Implying can only camp overnight 1 night. Not 2. Which is crummy. 2023 GTSS - New guideline included as above. 2022 GTSS - No mention of overnight camping restriction (that I can tell)
  11. I might be too old. It may be time if I go on campouts, I just need to find a tree to put my chair under. 😁
  12. I dont know. At Webelos Woods last November I was carrying a dutch oven back to the trailer in the dark. I tripped over one of those really big rocks that are supposed to keep you from driving into the camp site. I didn't just kind of trip either... I went down, the dutch oven ended up under the middle of the trailer. My lower abdomen was sore for two months, I had a spot on the side of my chest on the right side that hurt just as long. My knees are just down getting to the point where they don't feel swollen all the time and dont hurt when I stand up. So... 3 months to recover from tha
  13. I asked a former Troop adult about map reading, and was told the Troop really doesnt learn much about maps.... ....Things that make me bang my head against the wall.....
  14. I have been researching Texas 4-H for my kid lately. $30 for youth and $10 for adult volunteers. I have learned a thing or two about running a youth organization locally. I'm just sayin'....
  15. How does being COR affect this leader's ability to serve as an ASM? I understand an adult can only be registered in one position. However, the training and experience of being an ASM didn't evaporate with the change in primary position. I see no reason why he can't attend meetings and events with a COR patch and still help and assist Scouts.
  16. I know adding more requirements to an adult volunteer is not ideal, but maybe a Webelos / AOL Den Leader should be required to take BALOO/IOLS so they have an understanding of the skills needed. Maybe it doesn't need to be a Den Leader at all but an ASM + Den Chief from a Troop who responsibility it is to help with the transfer from Pack life to a Troop.
  17. I offer the Scout Handshake at the end of each BOR I am a part of and it takes Scouts and adults off guard every single time.
  18. Its my understand since recharter is through Internet Advancement now, everything should refresh pretty quickly. Council office is still reviewing everything manually. Just give them a few days.
  19. Some days the SM needs adult supervision. Last year, we were running stations for Webelos Woods and we needed a trash bag. Back to the campsite I headed to get a bag from the trailer. Got there and there were three or four Scouts washing dishes. The "clean" dishes were still caked with raw pancake batter and sausage. There were two adults shooting the bull around the fire and not paying attention. When I was able to get back to where the ASM and SM were with the Troop and also shooting the bull, I told em one of needed to get back and supervise Scouts. I have little faith in our S
  20. I am a 47 year old Gen Xer and I think that's ridiculous. Kids were born in 2008 and 2010. My wife had a better job with benefits. I became a stay at home dad. I am the one that gets up early, gets the kids ready, fix lunches, take them to school, go to the school meetings during the day. Do laundry, take care of the dishes, mow, fix plumbing, etc. Neither of us makes all the decisions about anything. I am the CC for two Troops, been a DL, a CM, several committee positions. In my 6 years of doing this across two programs and three Units, I have not run into the marriage dynamic y
  21. My kid won't go camp if I don't go and I am the CC for his Troop and my daughters. They expect this committee member to be in two places.
  22. I think your numbers are off. I was a Cub Scout/Boy Scout in the mid 80s. I graduated from high school in 1992. My generation began having kids about that time. My kids were born in 2008 and 2010, which is about the time my generations kids were grown and getting out on their own. My wife and I had kids really late. Anyway, the parents right now that are the pool of leaders are kids that were born into a world where the internet was already going strong and part of every day life. Adults that were Scouts in the 70s either have no kids in the program or maybe grandkids. Heck, people
