  1. hacking is the art of learning how a system works and discovering flaws that may be exploited. Jacking is taking over a system as in Hi-Jack. Cracking is gaining unauthorized access to a system. They probobly would rather shy away from the black hats
  2. Eagle is but one measure. It is a step that say i did something. It is not much different than a high shcoold kid that make state championship football. I actually started to wear my fish to scout meetings to keep the eagles quiet.
  3. High School science or physics teacher should count. Like KDD said any one that is in IT for computer science. Do you have a local business that does science based work? Farming area you can talk to a veterinarian or other farming science related issue such as weather. You are LDS and that church maintains a massive genealogical databases. national guard members my have a science background, local astronomy club? Science and engineering are everywhere you see you just need to look. Ask question a why is that like that?
  4. there are 10 types of people in the world those who are scouts and those are not. If you dont get the joke you dont get a cyber chip.
  5. Camp property. that way they can take the camp and the land resell it to developers for actual tax revenue either residential or business.
  6. Dont punish the cub scout or hinder his advancement Let him work with the Den Chief on his skills. Ask yourself are you doing what is best for the boy or what is easiest for the parents? to me it sounds like the latter. Put yourself in the Bears shoes. He is proud of what he did. by demoting hime to bear when he did nothing wrong except not have a birthday incordination with his birthday what message are you sending?
  7. You are comparing apples to th. High adventure and 25000 kids do not mix. With crowds that large you need crowd control, n boundries etc. etc or you have chaos. I am glad my troop did not attend this Jamboree and instead they went to sea base. My son is a seasoned scout of 5 months So far he has done an 8 mile bike ride to a clear a campsite with a machete and then shoot, a spring camp with improvised shelters. and summer camp. Whitewater rafting. This doesnt count the stuff he missed
  8. Here you go. http://www.scouting.org/Training/YouthProtection/CyberChip.aspx
  9. This is a thinly disguised money grab. i dont think the true purpose of this legislation is what it proponent claim it is.
  10. Make a stretcher with ropes and a poles or just rope. Plus it is only one knot. Clove Hitch http://www.hitt-initiative.org/mla/?page_id=719
  11. I think you need to learning about hacking and hackers before you make the determinations that it is not suitable for youths.
  12. Why is it that you only focused on the high tech / engineering merit badges that are vocational and not metalworking (1927) welding (2012) etc? almost all merit badges have a discuss what types of careers are associated with said merit badge
  13. merlyn as you may have gathered from my postings I am not a Christian fundamentalist nor do i approve of a particular theology being taught in scouting. there is a foundation of honor in even in atheism. for i hold that an atheist can have morals, ethics, a measure of right and wrong. So even though i share your point of view on the issue I have to say that I disapprove of the method and the message that you are insisting upon.
  14. I am divorced and only have custody of the scout 1 night a week. and every other weekend. plus scout nights and plus scout activities. luckily both his mother and i do as much as we can together. But based on time..... cooking a meal a week. plus a little bit of knot practice i'll do what I can without being a scouting only dad. cest le vie. but thank you all for the brainstorming it really did help alot.
  15. Yikes yikes thanks we can close the floodgates
  16. So this weekend i started doing scout craft with my son at home. What does this mean..... When lighting the fire for the grill make him use his firestater instead of a lighter. I am tring to think of some other things where he can practice his skills on a daily basis and not just know them from the checkout but so he can retain the information. any ideas?
  17. Thanks I stand corrected We did these as family exercises and discussion.
  18. Yes there are religious awards however none are required.
  19. Boy I am sure those churches always get to cast the first stone then.
  20. While there may be a few vocal atheist here i think they are a very small minority. I think the larger percentage oppose a fundamentalist christian only mixture of scouting and theology. I would be included in that percentage whatever it is. A scout should feel welcome if they are christian or not. I think that the main point of frustration with this topic. And thanks for bringing up something to divide us once again. most helpful
