  1. I just got tapped to lead a discussion about this at our round table this week. That info is super useful. Any other high level info that would be good to pass along to our district leaders?
  2. The Venturing one addresses age related stuff that doesn't match cub scout aged kids and issues to watch for.
  3. When available, please post a link to the new training. I think they did a good job on YPT for Venturing, my hope it will be as good. Obviously cub YPT will need to cover genders now.
  4. Our meetings are active, not just sitting and the boys helped to write the code of conduct and decided that was the rule. They also require boys to be in a field uniform shirt or not attend. Their rules that they wanted to follow, so we all follow them. Adults shouldn't feel that they don't have to follow the rules because they are older.
  5. In fact, tonight I had to tell an Eagle Scouter that he needed to wear shoes to the troop meetings..... It is on our troop code of conduct and adults should follow it too. Then I go to check on the meeting. And an ASM comes to tell me how they are saying "where in BSA does it say we have to wear closed toe shoes.....". Later he starts talked about all the BSA training he has taken. sigh
  6. Sadly, my most problematic Scouters have been Eagles. Others seem to be more willing to not fall back on, "When I was a scout..."
  7. When I was OWLS course director I made these for my staff and they loved them. Just a thought. If you stain the inside a different color than the outside, it blows their minds. I hand lettered the course and year with a pen. They all appreciated them.
  8. We are doing sailing not diving this year so I agree completely with bsaggcmom :-) I think the sailing adventure says no watches :-) We are on a three hour tour.....
  9. Thankfully we haven't had this issue. Our QMs are pretty good about making sure equipment is being taken care of properly.
  10. Not in our troop or state.... Our troop uses troop tents for the youth and most campgrounds here do not allow hammocks. I hope you can get the scouts driving the process of selection and ordering with Adult help.
  11. Sounds like they should take a trip to the sporting goods store to talk about tents. The ASM and the Quartermaster and SM/parents. It should be scout led and adult guided if there are any questions or issues that the scouts didn't think of.
  12. I don't think they are missing it, I think BSA is intentionally trying to get everyone onto Scoutbook. They have a long history of making this a difficult process for units. We used Scouttrack for years and you had to jump through hoops to connect to internet advancement. TroopMaster was approved and hooked up to it, but was too expensive, and lacked a good UI for years. What should they do? They should make a solid SDK for I/O of all the data and let the market create software. I bet an open source project on GIThub would end up being created and awesome, and free. But BSA doesn't
  13. Odd, if you go here: https://www.facebook.com/Scouts.Magazine/ you will see it in the videos portion of their page. I am not sure why the link doesn't work for you.
  14. It is hard to remember when we had light to setup tents....
  15. In Texas.... We have had 2 years in a row with severe fire bans, not even a candle allowed. LUCI light campfires have replaced campfires often.
  16. We camp 11-12 times a year. It varies about the activities the boys want to do about the location we choose. For example, shooting ranges/climbing tower is usually at scout properties. This year we stayed a majority at State parks, once at a national park, once at a US Army engineers park, and once at a private property. We haven't had great luck with private properties because there aren't a lot that we know about local.
  17. Welcome! You can have another MB counselor present when they do the tasks. For the preflight you could have a small group of boys walk around the plane with you and each take turns at the different stages, for example checking the fuel for water. Besides each will want to do that requirement. For #3, they can answer this verbally to you. If they get the chance to fly, they will remember that experience forever.
  18. ClassB is easy and decently priced. We use them. Super easy to design and print with them. Not quite as cheap as a local printer. We use the tech shirt material because the boys like them and they are very comfortable and look nice. Technically, any BSA trademarked imaging can only be reproduced by licensed partners like ClassB. I doubt any local printer would care but that is the legal limitation. Some printers may balk at printing them.
  19. Not I, my wife would kill me. I am already going to Seabase and Colorado for Summer camp.
