  1. I would appreciate it, my scouts too 🙂
  2. I would prefer a solid hard standard for all Gold awards and also make Eagle projects have to hold up to those standards as well. I have sat on a number of Eagle boards and very few projects are really difficult.
  3. So 2 years ago, when my daughter was proposing her Gold award for promoting literacy, building multiple little libraries, and having a portable one that could be used at senior citizen homes was denied that it wasn't enough, they only kept saying "We want it to be more" without any further direction after only communicating with her every 4 weeks. She got frustrated after 6 months of this crap and gave up. Now our local council is promoting gold award projects from this year and they included so much easier stuff like "teaching seniors to use facebook with powerpoints", no substainabi
  4. I totally agree with Oldscout. I have seen programs where they walk 3 miles, no maps, no compasses. Signed off for the 5 mile hike.... Someone holds an axe up and suddenly they have the requirement for sharpening an axe signed off. One boy with a broken arm that never got in the water, got his swimming merit badge. You need to review the signoffs before signing the books. A few of the programs are ok, but most aren't. Personally, I have similar feelings towards most merit badge classes at camp as well. Some are ok, but many are just sit and watch.
  5. Just saw this: Obviously, the situation is still very fluid, but Northern Tier is working hard to put together a plan to assist with the crews displaced by the fires near Philmont Scout Ranch. We want to be able to work with as many crews as possible, however we are limited by permit, facility and program capacity. As we assess what we can accommodate over the next few days, information from you will be helpful. Please use the below link to provide us with the details of your Philmont Crew and we will reach out to you once we have more details on what options may be available.
  6. Saw this posted: The dedicated staff at Philmont calling participants with available options. Sounds like they are trying.
  7. Major bummer, I feel bad for all the crews affected. Obviously, safety is primary, not much else they can do for them.
  8. Update from a dad whose son is a Ranger. I take this update from Philmont as good news! Staff returning to base camp this morning. Ponil, ‘Cito, Hunting Lodge and Clarke’s Fork are OK.
  9. Congrats! I just hope your project wasn't yet another gaga ball pit.
  10. Horrible 😞 One question I have is from previous years where there was fire, what happens to the wildlife following the fire? less food around do they become more aggressive?
  11. Random dutch oven thoughts, I am sure there are many many more parchment paper liners can be easily made from 18" wide parchment paper. I have to buy that length on amazon. technique, make a 18" square of paper from the roll, fold diagonally 4 more times, put the point in the center of the dutch oven, measure to the side and up a 3/4 of the wall and trim the wide edge, unfold it and you have a round liner sized for your dutch oven. For stuck on food first use the rubber square scrappers to try to scrap it clean for stubborn stuff get the 4" square of chain mail to lightly
  12. In a Nalgene bottle before camp, crack 12 eggs. 8 oz of milk, 8 oz of shredded cheese, 1 lb cubed ham/cooked bacon crumbled/precooked breakfast sausage, 1 T worchester sauce. In a bag put in 8 oz of seasoned bread crumbs, 1 tsp dry mustard. Start coals for 350 degrees Shake nalgene until eggs are scrambled Pour egg mixture into dutch oven (I use a parchment paper liner) Pour dry mixture into the dutch oven, lightly mix it in. Cover dutch oven Cook for 40 minutes or so, start checking at 30 minutes to see if the eggs are set cut into slices like pizza a
  13. Here is the Lava cake recipe: https://www.campingforfoodies.com/chocolate-lava-dutch-oven-cakes/ Key things I noticed: the foil cup holders are lined with parchment paper. Remove the parchment paper as the stick. right before putting the batter into the cups, put a shot of spray oil into the foil cup preheat the dutch oven it makes a difference After 10 minutes check the cakes every minute, you want the tops to basically just dry out. 13-14 minutes is the times that have worked for me. A side of vanilla ice cream is amazing with it. The waiting is the

  15. After reading pages and pages of responses: I am surprised about some of the responses about them being available at Jambo. IMHO, their presence isn't the incentive for the participants. They are legal, safe, and effective. Preventing them from having them could introduce some seriously negative after effects. We all try to raise our kids with our values, but we can't guarantee they will always follow them. If that was the case, we wouldn't need police.
  16. I can get a roll of 18" parchment paper for $8 that is 75 feet, lots and lots of liners
  17. I make something similar to this, I have swapped out the ham for turkey breakfast sausage. I just precook that before the trip, put the ingredients all in a nalgene ahead of time. The morning you heat the coals, shake the nalgene to scramble everything, pour it in and wait 45 minutes. Bam! it is awesome. I do cheat with this one and use a parchment paper liner I make from an 18" wide parchment paper roll. Here is a picture of one I made this weekend, I fashioned a parchment paper divider because 50% of my family didn't want cheese.....(seriously)
  18. That would be great, when I asked before they basically said no. If anyone wants the lava cake recipe let me know. it isn't hard and it is incredible.
  19. Food makes me happy, let's share some of your masterpieces. Last night I made Chocolate lava cakes in the dutch oven. Finished off the dinner of dutch teriyaki bacon wrapped chicken breast over warmed veggies and rice. I forgot to include the picture of that.
  20. I am sorry to see you go, we are all richer from your posts and poorer knowing we won't see them. I hope the moderators realize the reticulations of their actions.
