  1. The ridiculous thing in my opinion is this is the COOKING MB not CAMPING MB or BACKPACKING MB or T-1 requirements. Nowhere in the requirements does it state the cooking must or should be done for your Patrol. Just cook for "two others". There is absolutely no reason the troops program should slow down the ability of a Scout to earn the MB. Anyone insisting these cooking activities must be done while camping or backpacking with the troop is just adding to the requirements. It sure would be a whole lot more fun to do with your patrol but not required. It is about cooking camping, backpacking and kitchen meals, not camping or backpacking. In fact I think it is probably a good idea to practice cooking a backpacking meal before actually trying it out on the trail.
  2. It's just that a sense of humor is so out of character for you. But growth should be encouraged so: Lol. Very good.
  3. Nutty, why the non-locking blade rule ? I get it if the scout cannot unlock it, but a locking blade is much safer to actually use.
  4. He can pray all he wants in school. I bet he does before every test. He just can't lead a group prayer.
  5. Their resume will read "Pre January 1, 2014 Eagle Scout". They will proud of their higher tier Eagle. After Ted Cruz I'm not so sure about those Canadians anymore.
  6. There are allegedly 6 COs in my district that are refusing to recharter, that is out of 170, so not many statistically. 2 are Presbyterian not sure about the others. They claim they are going with Trailer Life USA.
  7. And I thought the rush was so they didn't have to do the Cooking MB.
  8. bear requirement 7 Law enforcement is a big job. I suppose visiting the jail would count.
  9. Looks like amazon has the Opinel on Prime. http://www.amazon.com/First-Opinel-Junior-Folding-Knife/dp/B002QQMTJG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1383751283&sr=8-1&keywords=opinel+my+first Just remember the Whittlin chip is optional. My oldest boy did not have good fine motor skills so he was restricted to sharpened Popsicle stick knives and plastic knives carving soap until he was a bit older. My ER deductible was also $500 at that time. Only you know if he is ready to use this tool. Stress to him it is a tool and not a toy.
  10. A lot of people like the Opinel, "my first Opinel" they have some with a rounded tip to reduce the chance for accidents. Personally I think a lock back knife is best because it won't close down on little inexperience fingers. My sons find the scout shop knives difficult to close. The Opinel is About $16 with shipping, scout shop cub knives are about $15-20. I am ordering the Opinel for my bear and suggesting it for the den. It can be engraved also. Might not get it in a week however. http://www.opinel-usa.com/products.asp?cat=MY+FIRST+OPINEL#.UnpaKLK9KK0 I also think the boys should have some experience with soap carvings before hitting to wood. Here are some threads where the issues are discussed. http://www.scouter.com/forum/cub-scouts/18594-pocket-knives-for-cub-scouts Qhttp://www.scouter.com/forum/cub-scouts/389819-whittling-chip-earned-by-wolves-what-do-i-do
  11. Anyone ever try to order Klingon or Shyriiwook (wookie) ?
  12. Q, I could be wrong, but I thought Akela was gone in Webelos. Christineka, I would suggest always involving the parents to some degree. Maybe they don't want their some making some particular widget for some odd reason. As they say, there is one in every crowd.
  13. Check your recharter packet. You are listed as a "Paid Volunteer". Now your double dipping.
  14. Since the BSA does not have a rule that the uniform is required, it does not have a rule that it must be worn while traveling.
  15. Well I did have a good fake ID and a 27 year old girlfriend senior year. Again, we don't know much. Was he selling to 13 year old or 17 ? And what ?10 years ago I was well into my 30s. You are speculating he is younger, I older. Who knows ?
  16. "I did, got home in be by 12:50." Yep, you got enough sleep. Hope your coding goes well today.
  17. Don't just visit campouts, visit troop meetings also. Most troops will not mind if you show up unannounced. You don't want to show up for a "show". What is the age distribution of the troop ? Are there any boys over 14 ? There were in my current troop for the joint campout, never seen them since.
  18. TB, My son and I are in the process of deciding if we want to switch troops. There are certainly lots of things to consider and the decision is not easy. The thread I started has a lot of excellent suggestions from forum members and great questions to ask and consider. If you have time you you should read through it. http://www.scouter.com/forum/open-discussion-program/395445-how-to-scout-a-new-troop
  19. I don't know, maybe because my children are not allowed to play rated M video games. Besides that, IT WAS A FREAKING SCHOOL NIGHT.
  20. The circumstances would matter but many would consider selling drugs to minors an act of violence.
