Smartphones in Scouting: A curse or a cure?
King Ding Dong replied to walk in the woods's topic in Open Discussion - Program
"It clearly beats the compass when it comes to learning about effective land or water navigation." Clearly the Orienteering MB will be discontinued soon. That ranks right up there with Kudu's favorite quotes from scout executives. -
Privacy ? I spent to many years in a Y locker room. Don't want to see my ugly ass, close your eyes.

How does your troop manage lights out ?
King Ding Dong replied to King Ding Dong's topic in The Patrol Method
PackAlex, cubs have an amazing ability to be "tired" and "exhausted" but when something peaks there interest, they get an instant recharge. We took a few cubs recently to a orienteering event that had a 1.5 mile short course for the cubs. The moaning and groaning starts in about 3/4 of the way through. That is until we came upon Cub World. Turned into a bunch of Energizer Bunnies. -
Individual Scout Accounts Part Trois
King Ding Dong replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Unit Fundraising
I am really confused. We now have some so committee members arguing over how to distribute proceedes for the camp card sales. Is that one paragraph all BSA is providing for guidance ? From what I am reading here it is not permissible to use ISAs. So scouts that do not participate must receive benefit ? But we can allocate based on financial hardship ? Who does not claim financial hardship ? -

That Cub leader and his unmotivated Scout
King Ding Dong replied to Basementdweller's topic in Advancement Resources
Hmmm. You must not like direct confrontation. I have a pretty good idea of what you would say to this parent if they made a post here about the issue. -
Hiking and playing in the drainage creek is a favorite with the cubs around here especially at night. Might be a good time to introduce wool socks. If you are a novice camper here are a few basic tips. Get some cheap LED headlamps. Lotion type bug spray if needed, my council bans the spray. You will likely overpack. Try a and keep most of your extra " just in case" clothes, supplies in a separate duffle in your car. Lugging 800 lbs to the campsite puts a damper on the fun from the git go.

SS, if you can successfully post this software you can post to Dropbox. Just download the installer, create the account, drag your files into the Dropbox folder, copy a link to the file and post the link here.

Ouch. As they say, you get what you pay for. S-F makes the schedule so they boys would have a hard time earning more than 3 merit badges. No dinning hall for the Scouts, only for venturers. (Small v intentional) http://www.stlbsa.org/camping/AllAboutSummerCamp/tour/Pages/S%20bar%20F/Camp-Fees.aspx

Read Merit Badge Books and complete worksheets or not?
King Ding Dong replied to bokris's topic in Advancement Resources
From 2013 GTA (note last sentence) 7.0.4.8 Unofficial Worksheets and Learning Aids Worksheets and other materials that may be of assistance in earning merit badges are available from a variety of places including unofficial sources on the Internet and even troop libraries. Use of these aids is permissible as long as the materials can be correlated with the current requirements that Scouts must fulfill. Completing “worksheets†may suffice where a requirement calls for something in writing, but this would not work for a requirement where the Scout must discuss, tell, show, or demonstrate, etc. Note that Scouts shall not be required to use these learning aids in order to complete a merit badge. -
$350 for out of council, that is steep.

Congrats. Do what everyone else does. Find a captive audience that is there for another purpose and then drone on and on about the Zulus.

How bad do you procrastinate?

Should I accept an nomination/election ?
King Ding Dong replied to King Ding Dong's topic in Order of the Arrow
We were out of council last year but I know they take the boys out in the woods and bring them back at some point on Friday. Hopefully BD peek in here soon and offer some advise on an economical way to modify my system. -

I watched a SM change a 2 to a 3 last summer in the parking lot before we left for camp. -
I really like the illustrations for the most part. They are easier to follow than most other guides I have seen. The one I would like to see a better illustration for is the water knot. I know it is simple, I just have a hell of a time getting it right when tying my swami belt. Never can get it tight enough around my waist. A smaller belly would help, don't know if you can help me with that.

Would be nice if they focused on the important stuff like paragraphs on an iPad.

Should I accept an nomination/election ?
King Ding Dong replied to King Ding Dong's topic in Order of the Arrow
The CPAP runs on 24V DC. So I need a 24V battery or a 12-24V converter, plus a lighter battery. The last time I looked into it the converter from the manufacturer it was $90, might do a bit better if I DIY it with the right connections. Just need to make sure it is right so I don't fry the CPAP and PO the insurance company. My current system is horribly inefficient and heavy but just hobbled it together with what I had on hand. Marine battery to AC inverter to the CPAP power supply converts back to DC. -

I am with Twocubdad and Duckfoot, I really don't care when they go to sleep. I am concerned about them disturbing others who want to sleep. Especially if we are at a public campground or camporee. I like the 2x4 idea but lumber is expensive, a flaming log would be more thrifty. -

Thanks, my UC and COR are members so I will consult with them if another adult would be beneficial to the local chapter and see how the scheduling works out. Given the CPAP would it be considered good form to take part in the pre-ordeal or whatever goes on that first night ? -
All packs run differently. In general, your current Tiger Den Leaders will become Wolf Den Leaders on June 1. It is probably not a great idea to get him integrated with a particular den right now but more involved the the Pack as a whole. Many Packs, especially school based ones don't meet much in the summer except for a Summerime Pack Activity once each month. Maybe that is a fishing outing or a pack swim, picnic, hike, maybe a campout. Your council may have Parent and Pal, Mom and Me or similar overnight campouts you can attend or even some 9-3 day camps that would be fun. In most cases Tiger Dens are formed at a recruitment night and guess who the new Tiger Den Leader is ? The one parent willing to put in "One hour a week". My best suggestion is to call the council office now and find out when the next cub leader training class is and then attend it. It should only cost $20 and that is to cover the manuals they will give you. You will meet great district level Scouters who will be a great resource and can get a great feel for the whole program and what to look for. If there is not a live class before fall, go to myscouting.org creat an account and start taking the online classes, including youth protection training. Most modules are about a half hour. You do not need to be a member of the BSA to do this. Have fun and welcome to Scouting!

At this point I will be the only leader at summer camp this year for the full week. The new SM and ASM will be taking shifts and both will be fresh out IOLS and I am the only leader eligible for OA and if elected/nominated would be the only active leader in OA in the unit after the current SM steps down shortly. I meet all objective requirements. My main concern is I require my CPAP for sleeping and do not have the funds for a more portable light battery system and don't want to lug heavy, big deep cycle battery around the woods. These two guys had the idea of Co-SM, but I had to squash that one. Given their "part-time" ideas of leadership and inability to attend camp for the full week, if I don't join OA the unit will likely have no AO leadership for the foreseeable future. Not sure how important that is.

Start shopping around now. Does he have any friends looking to join a Pack ? Where are they going. See if the Packs have a summer program. Technically he join June 1st and even if there is not a den formed yet he can participate in the summer activities. Go to some pack meetings and see how they are run. Are they fun?

Pack and Troop Adult Leader Registration
King Ding Dong replied to Fehler's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
If the pack does not have an official Pack Trainer that is an excellent position for you. Basically you facilitate training and tracking for all the leaders and orient new families to the pack. It is the one position that really requires experience.
