  1. Sorry about that. I am not used to seeing campfire ampitheaters that big. I guess i could see your point of the sound system. The lights I can see for before and after the show. so that everyone can safely get to their seats. I stand corrected, (At the back of the campfire ampitheater) I guess I am at a slight disadvantage only going to smaller Camps YiS SctDad
  2. OK I have just a few comments about the things at the camp you are refering to * rebuilding the stage area (isn't this the area around the campfire) * rebuilding the seats/seating area (Ok I did this one when I went through, no other comments) * rebuilding/building a soundbooth and a/v system, including speakers, lighting, etc" A/V system??? Sound Booth??? Speakers??? Why??? we just need to speak up and be heard. I can understand the lights, maybe if we used just a minimal amount for the campfire. I guess I am of the old scouting (Not as old as others) where you carried a f
  3. Unfortunatly there is no realy cheap way to send stuff over to Iraq, if you package is heavy. You usually have to ship through the postal service. That is just the nature of the beast. You may want to try some smaller crafts or other lightweight items. Or you may try recruiting some people/business's to help with the shipping.
  4. Here is the Link to Pamlico Sea Base in North Carolina. They have some interesting looking adventures. I think I would like to Outerbanks Trek when my son gets old enough. http://www.pamlicoseabase.org/main.html
  5. LC Jones I wish you the best in your quest for having a great Cub Program. I love it and I am having just as much fun if not more than my son. I can see where some are coming from when they say that DE's come in and try to break up a Pack to make new units. I guess that is one of their objectives. If you are approached with this, try this angle towards your DE. Instead of trying to make MORE units, ask her to help you make a more quality unit. Every boy make advancement, higher popcorn sales, more council related activities, and then you may be able to get your local busin
  6. I have a question. If I am planning a Pack Overnighter, or Family Campout, but only the boys from my dend are able to go, (I have 4 Wolves, 1 Bear, NO Webelos and we have not recruited Tigers yet) can we still go? It is not a larger pack function because we dont have all the dens. We have 2 Deep leadership, BALOO trained persons, and all the needed firstaid trained personnel. On the issue of the arrow point requirements. I would eat a lil crow and admit that you were mistaken. the boys can earn the electives, but they cannot recieve the arrow points until they have completed their
  7. I know of our local troop that had something like that. The SM recently retired from SM position after 25 years. He is still involved, but not as the SM. I think that he is on the Committee or he may just be an additional hand. I hope someone one day will be saying the same about me, because I believe in the program and know of the benefits. Here's to manyh future years in scouting. Sct Dad
  8. "Are you there because you are a member of the Legion or because you are a dad?" I joined the Legion because I was asked to for two reasons. Yes the first was for the Cub Scouts. But the Commander said that he would not force me to. But he did ask that I join for the camaradie and membership benefits of the legion due to my veteran status. I had been meaning to join but these were just more reasons. I go to legion meetings as a member of the legion AND let them know how things are going in the Scouts. I participate in Legion functions as a member, like putting the flags up on Memori
  9. GW I have a question. How many troops are led by SM and ASM's that are parents of the boy's in the program, and then promptly leave after their boys get out of scouting. I am the CM now. But I am ALSO a member of the American Legion. I also have a son who is in the program, and one who will be in it in a few years. Do I meet the requirements as you say. We do have some interest from the Legion. They're not knocking down the doors but they like having the boys there and want to be more involved. We are working on that issue, and things are looking up. We are trying to t
  10. PACK15 I think you are a lot like me when I come up with something. Just a day late. But if you are able to help some of the people in your council then I think you will be doing more of a service then you may know. Trax has just been around for a little while and they have made the changes You effort is there. It's a great idea. Hopefully you ca make something with it locally and work from there.
  11. I find it sad that, when we have so many people that having problems with their CO, when one person states something that might be helpful, and how they have a good relationship with their CO, the first post is an insult saying that the CO is merely a gracious host. I know I am new to scouting as a leader. I do not know the books inside and out as many here point out very fast. I have not recieved all of my training. (I did get my BALOO done BTW) Sorry. But I am trying to get things done. I am reading the books and trying to learn how things should work. Check out this l
  12. I agree with Goldwinger. You will have to possibly give it away to some before you are able to market it. Kind of like a Beta testing group. I like the Trax, I have started using it, and I like the way it works. I hope that you figure things out and are able to market your application soon
  13. I have been looking over the posts and see that there are a lot of problems that some are having with their CO. On their bright side, our CO is great. They not only jumped at the oppurtunity to take us on when we needed a CO, But they also let us know that there was a room that would be big enough for us to hold our meetings and activities in. It is a nice sized room and there is plenty of wall space for us to put things up as long as we follow some simple rules on putting holes in the walls. The post Commander is also impressed with us in that we make sure the chairs that we use
  14. Sounds like you may have found something that works. I only have one question, what is the program basis of your system. Is it excell (Like the Trax) or is it Access. Or have you written a completely new program for tracking. I am always looking for new ways to track information for the boys in my pack, but right now I use Trax and that works fine. If there is something that is better and comes with updates, I would be interested in looking into it. As long as it is supported and updates are available. Can you give me some more information.
  15. I got hold of the RMH today finally. There are some rules that have to be followed. and that made me have to change how we would help the RMH. No children under the age of 10 can be ing the kitchen, 10-18 y/o can be in the kitchen with a adult:kid ratio of 1:4. The kids are also not allowed to carry anything too hot or something that has knives on it. They must also be given a clean bill of health. This is due to the patients at the RMH that may have lowered immune systems (ie Cancer, leukiemia) All that aside, I talked with the worker and she suggested something.
  16. I am thinking about contacting the Ronald McDonald House near our local childrens hospital. When my daughter was a newborn and in the hospital, they were great to me and my wife. I talked with the parents and they thought that helping was a great idea. So we are talking about helping them by cooking a nice meal for all the residents. Of course the parents would help. You know have the boys in uniform and make it special for the parents going through hard times. Maybe spending time with the kids who are staying there also. That is one thing that we are planning on. See if there
  17. You were looking for the interpreter strips that are not exactly normal http://www.boyscoutstore.com/store/Scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=83 There are also spoof merit badges. Have fun.
  18. I have heard some great suggestions. I have seen a lot of them from Gunny and that is what I was expecting. I think Gunny and other are right when they say look towards your local recruiting station. They will probably have someone that will be willing to help. I have seen several suggest keeping it simple with just calling out the left foot. Here are some other suggetions that you may want to consider. If you do have a little story that you want or something like that, try putting some notes on index cards that fit not only in the pocket of your uniform shirt, but also in the pa
  19. I have to agree with you in that I like the old style canvas tents. In our pack we have seeeral former members of the military, and they all remember the shelter half. It was good in that you could split the load and two people carry the shelter. We are looking into purchasing several sets of shelter halfs for our cubs to give them a good camping experience. But that is not to say that we won't keep the newer dome tents on hand for new scouts and families that are looking for something that is a little easier. It all depends on what we are trying to do or how much time we have avail
  20. John in KC Be careful mentioning that you are packing DOD style pants and tops. That might bring us back to the previous issues of using military clothig while on scouting activities. But IMHO, I would have the same stuff packed.
  21. SOunds like a great idea. I will talk with our boys and see if they are interested. I will PM you with my e-mail.
  22. I have been trying to recruit new leaders for the pack. the biggest thing I get is I don't have the time. I find that hard to believe but if that is what they want to say than I am not going to argue. I registered for positions so that we could save the pack. But the boys still needed someone to step up and say "I will lead" that just happened to be me. And the parent that said that things cost too much, quit coming right after paying for their registration. The only things that we had that cost anything from there were $8 for the PWD car and it would have been $20 for the
  23. I was wondering what every one who goes to the Cubs Scout Round Table, would it be interesting if there was more than just the upcoming months themes. Meaning, would it be interesting is someone came in and did other things after that like, additional crafts, extra games, and maybe ways to make some games or other useful scouting object. I was just thinking of a way to keep us from getting into the same ol same ol. What do you guys think??
  24. OK here is the deal We are a small pack, in a small farming community. We have, as of right now 1 Tiger, 4 Wolves, and 1 Bear. We are not part of a high dollar community. We are trying to earn money so we can get a pack flag and pay for registration. We also need to buy chairs and tables for our scout room. I come here often for help as I am new at the leading aspect of scouting. It seems like every time I get several remarks about how I am doing things wrong, or not doing them right. I am trying. I am limited on resources and people. We saved this pack from being shut
  25. Can someone give me some information or a link to where I would be able to find more information about NCS. Things like Who, what, where when. That type of stuff. Thanks
