Driver responsibility for Cub Scout Packs
SctDad replied to 3GuysMom's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I can see where everyone is coming from. On the topic, Children in seat belts or booster seats if the law requires them. Cut and dry. Either way they still have on a seat belt. That is the way it is in my vehicle and I hope that my parents do it the same way. My 2 cents on the DUI/DWI. Look at the situation. Did the person disclose it. Was he honest. Is he a repeat offender or was it an isolated incident. How long ago did this happen. THese are things that I would take into consideration. -
I know that when I did the YP training online there was a example of a scout not having his parent to pick him up after the meeting, and they would not be able to be there for 30 - 45 minutes. The situation is one of difficulty. But the possible response is to drive the child him, ONLY if your child is also with you so there is no 1-1 contact I think that you should talk to the parent and see what they would like to do.

Look out everyone. They are using subdued patches. Don't want to get us confused with the military and their subdued patches. We all know how much debate that will start. Anyway, I think that a more durable shirt with less patches required and more functional pockets would be a good thing. I do not mean to sound rude or anything about the subdued patches, but there was a MULTIPLE page thread about functionality and military uniforms. And I think that if they go to these subdued patches someone will have something to say about it. It really doesn't matter to me.

Coming to a school near you on April 25 - "day of silence"
SctDad replied to eisely's topic in Issues & Politics
FScouter Easy there. I have noted several veterans here. I just don't want your comment to be taken the wrong way. But I do understand your train of thought. I think that we are getting WAY too out of hand for all the different days that we need a day for. I think that sometimes there ends up being so many things to remember that we forget some of the important things. How about "Go Play in the Yard Day" And as a side note, May is National BBQ month, so lets fire 'em up -
Sounds like it would be fun. I always liked the Klondike Derby when I was younger. I was thinking about starting something similar to it down in the south here where we do not get snow. Do you do things like starting fires without matches. I know when we did our klondike derby we had to try to start a fire without matches. If you were successful it was great. But you had to try. If you had to go to matches then that was OK. After you got the fire going you had to boil an egg in a wax paper cup over the fire. Yes it can be done. The last part of the task was someone on the team had to eat the egg. Remember, this was at a time in our history when eating half cooked food was not the worst thing in the world. Nothing said that you had to fully eat the egg. It was all in fun and gave us great tasks to complete. There was also a bunch of other tasks. Like Scout trivia and simple brain teasers. I will see if I can come up with some of the other games and stuff that we did.

SctNut Thanks for the words of encouragement. I do apologize for what was taken as rudeness. But I saw it as a off shoot of what kind of camping I should be doing instead of what I was looking for. The references to the GTSS that I was trying to avoid were the ones that TELL me to look in there for things that I thought I could get through discussion here. Thnks again for the pointers. I know that we will be doing FAMILY camping. Even though there are a few parents who I have earned their trust, I still don't think they would let their boys go camping without them. That should have been a gimmie. I have always had every intention on taking families with me. Mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters. As long as they pay their way I am fine with that. Come on now. I may be new but I am not stupid. What I am looking for is anyone who has done this before and what experiences have they had. Good, Bad, or Indifferent. In response, if we could stay on topic and avoid quoting me GTSS and all the other regulations in regards to how to do things, it would make this thread a little more productive. Sorry if I seem ill, but it gets frustrating when topics take a wild spin.

I have been doing so research for our camping trip. Since our last two were rained out due to severe weather. What I have been looking into is this. Our local council camp has cabins on it and they allow people to rent these for camping. I have been thinking about renting these cabins for our pack that way if there is bad weather the trip is not a bust and we can still go and have fun. The average cost for the cabins is going to be about $5 a person for the cabins. We still plan on doing our other events and activities, just having the stronger shelters is our concern Has anyone done this before, and how did they like the event. Any input.(This message has been edited by SctDad)

I can see where there is a difference of opinion. How can we tell a boy that he cannot be a Patrol leader AND a Den Chief. Or a quartermaster and librarian. Every pack/troop/crew probably has at least one adult who has dual roles. I think that if a boy is to assume 2 POR, then he should do so only with the advise of the SPL, JASM or the SM. If the boy is the type who can do both jobs successfully and with no problems to all of his other responsibilities, including school, then I think that he should be good with it. Don't hold one back because you THINK there may be a regulation about it. If there is one then that would be something to think about. But if you are like myself, COR and Den leader among other things, then it would be hard for me to go through and tell a boy e can only do one thing. YIS SctDad

I can see where everyone is coming from. So I can see that there should not be divisions called 'Patrols' Would it be wrong for me to rename them to dens like Dragon, or raven instead of the Webelos 1 and Webelos 2. If this is so are the cub scouts authorized to wear a patch signifying the Den name. I was just wondering if this would be a problem. Now I know someone is going to say reference the uniform guide, so before anyone starts yelling at me about checking it, please know that I do not have a copy. We are on a limited budget and getting all of the different regulation books along with all of the things needed to run successful and fun meetings is getting expensive and it is hard to get all of the little books that everyone talks about here. If someone can help me with this regulation it would be appreciated. YIS SctDad

I have heard some discussion about using patrols in the Cub Scouts when the Dens get too big. Does anyone else out there use the patrol system in the Pack and if so do you have the boys put the patrol patches on the uniform. I am just looking at some of the other issues that are forthcoming next year. Any Help??

rjscout I can see what you are talking about with the floods or drought. Looks like there has been a drought at the board today. For those of you who sent the suggestions, they are pretty good. If someone could give me a link to the old program helps that they might know about, it would be great. Thanks again

Is there anyone else out there that can help me with this topic

Try a film canister with a face decorated on it Cut the bottom out to slide the neckercheif through it. Or you could use the PVC Pipe Try this, you are doing clowns, how about making little first aid kits out of the film canisters, attach the PVC. and tell the boys to remember, that first aid is no laughing matter Sorry if that last part did not make sence, been too busy here lately.

Our District is having a twighlight camp this summer and they are looking for some skits and songs. If anyone has any skits or songs that would go great with a Scouts on Safari theme. If you have it on your computer and can post it that would begreat, or if you have a link to a certain site could you post that. Thanks in advance.

Just in case anyone was wondering, the tickets did not sell. Yes I am bored and at the computer

I have tried this, but it seemed like no one looked at it. It seems like they just took it home and tossed it away. But I do plan on putting together a new one this month.

I seem to be having problems with communicating with my packs parents. I have tried e-mail, starting a web group, and have found that the only way that I can get messages to most of them is to try calling, which only works some of the time, and when I leave messages, it can take days to get a response. Does anyone else have these issues with communications? Does anyone have any pointers?

I will see what I can do about getting a scanned copy of the rank displays for you. I will try scanning them and see if I can send them to you VIA e-mail.

I posted this because I have seen some other very off the wall postings and I just thought it was funny enough to get a laugh. I am sorry if I offended someone with it.

The uniforms that would get respect would depend on the situation. If we were in the woods, one that shows a lot of days in the woods, but still looks good. If we were at an awards ceremony, a nice, clean, pressed uniform that shows a scouters accomplishments. There is one things that I have not heard anyone mention yet. Service Stars. I think that if there is someone who has a few years on those stars, then that could show some committment (SP) And one other thingthat is a show of dedication for me. Patches that sewn on. Not just using patch attach. The stuff souds great, but I am still a fan of sewing them on as my mother told me when I was younger, 'If you are gonna keep earning these, you are gonna learn to sew' But most of all everything must be earned. In the military we called the fakes PX rangers. Any one can buy a patch and sew it on. But how many can earn one the right way.

Experts Now Recommend Hands-Only CPR
SctDad replied to fgoodwin's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Here is what the deal with the push only CPR. The studies have shown that the lay persons were taking too much time between compressions and ventilations. Not to mention that there is enough oxygen in blood stream to support the body for a short ammount of time if you are doing consistant compressions. Now the Professional rescuer, or as they call it, Healthcare Provider, you are still required to check for breathing, provide ventilations, and be able to check for a pulse. And to top it all off the total hands off time for giving the respirations if 10 seconds. That is ventilating the patient and returning to the chest. Compression:Breath ratio is now 30:1. and that is probably getting ready to change. As for the question about the face mask in the First Aid Kit. You will still need it if you are to have to do rescue breathing. So keep getting them. I know this is all confusing, but if you think as base level rescuers it is hard, try being an instructor. FScouter They are not saying 1 DC for all 17 cubs. They are saying,, get at least 2 and split the boys. Or even better as suggested, get at least 3. Then each den will have an optimun of 6 boys. I am running into some of these same problems. Next year I will be taking over as CM. I am currently serving as DL for 6 and 1 Wolf. I have been telling some of the parents, I will be asking for more help next year due to other commitments and family responsibilities. I think that if I can remind the parents that being a DL is not only that difficult, but it can be fun. And I think some of the parents are starting to see that. Anyway, good luck and I hope everything works out.
