  1. I know this may sound like a gimmie, but do not forget to tell someone where you will be coming out at, and when you are expected to return. That way if you are late, they know about where you should be. I would still consider the bear bag thing. Let the menfolk play with the rope.
  2. NHawk52 If the boy is to be withdrawn from scouting, it is the parents choice, but I would hate to see him go. I think he would benefit from the program a lot. The only other issue that I have is that he has a uniform that was loaned to him from the pack. One of the other parents bought it for him and only asked that if he left to return it so that it would be available for other Cubs. That is now the issue.
  3. We are doing 'Scouts on Safari' this year at our twighlight camp. There are a lot of themes that you can use and figure out games from there.
  4. I have a question. I Have been having some problems with parental participation in the things that we are doing with the Tiger Den. The Tiger Den is our largest (7 Boys) and it seems like the parents are just taking the boys to have something to do. Example We are getting ready to have our pinewood derby in about a week and a half. I asked the parents to get what they need and if any of them needed any help in getting the cars. I have only had one parent give me money. It seems like the parents just want everything done and handed to them. They are also the ones that asked to
  5. Just as I was talking about, here is a list of the belt loops that it asks for to be earned as a Webelos Scout I understand that some of these may be sports that are grouped as optional, but these are a starting point. Swimming Art Physical Fitness Citizenship Computers Communicating Math Heritages Geology Wildlife Conservation Language and Culture Chess Science Weather Astronomy Music Geography Map and Compass Hope this list helps
  6. Effort plays a big part in my mind. I have one parent who is one that I could see being one of the families that needs camperships and things like that. THe only thing that I am having a problem with is the fact that since our CHristmas Party on the 20th of December, I have been able to make contact with her 2 times. And those were only because I was passing her house on the way home, and I stopped in to drop off some materials for her. She E-mailed me one time ni reference to a campout that we were trying to go on. The e-mail was dates 00:30 on my e-mail. This is when she thought it
  7. Beagle I see where you are coming from now. I was just bringing out the point that as leaders and parents, we should let the boys know that they will have to re-earn the award. The BL's have three requirements. That is not very many. It makes for some effort required, but not so much as to discourage the boys. Don't forget, there are other award that one can work for other than just the BL's. Outdoor activity, crime prevention, and things like that. Something that I have been working on with the summer months coming up soon, the LNT program. I am try ing to get the boys
  8. Check Out Scoutstuff.org Here is the link that I found the literature at http://www.scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/CtgySearchPage.aspx?c=01RTL&d=BOOKS_LIT&page=LIST&free_text|=handbook||fieldbook&answers_per_page=15 That should be the most current books. Your council shop should also have the right book.
  9. Here is my personal opinion. I think that the books are something that should be paid for. This has the requirements that the parent needs to know so that the Cub can earn his next rank. The other stuff that you pay for I can understand. When you do fund raisers, how do you tell which boys benefit from the money. Look at it that way. IF a boy who comes from a needful family shows up at a yard sale with his parent and helps out all day, when others only come for half the day, he should be one to benefit from the proceeds. But if they are a needful family and tey do nothing to wo
  10. We had to postpone our campout. Heavy thunderstorms came through our area last night, and we were figuring that this would not be good weather for a first campout for the tigers. But we still went up there during the day. We went through the Nature center and the Science building, the boys played in the Park and looked through the fossil dig. They rode the train. After lunch we went fishing for a couple of hours. The boys enjoyed it and we all had fun. We are planning to have our campout in 4 weeks. Lets hope for better weather.
  11. Check Out these two links http://usscouts.org/advance/docs/Scout.pdf http://www.geocities.com/~pack215/arrow-of-light.html Looks like to me that a lot of the requirements are the same for the joining requirements of Boysscouts (Not a rank) and the Arrow of Light Just my observation
  12. The NRA has a shooting sports program. That is who the training is done through for BSA shooting sports training. BB Gun, Rifle, AShotgun. They has a program that, if I rememebr correctly, you cna score a 35 in 10 shots, you can get a patch and award. I will look into this a little more when I get back today.
  13. jmwalston I will see if we have anything like that coming up here in eastern NC. I am still waiting on some other training.
  14. Actually Beagle Scout, if you look at the wolf requirements, they have "As a wolf scout, earn the BB Gun and Archery Belt Loop" or at least they say to earn them in the Wolf Requierments. But this is something that can be done at just about every Council Day Camp. At least down here they do. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. I have a list of BL's that are needed for WEBELOS and will try to keep those for the Webelos years. But if a boy wants he can earn it at any time, I will just let him know that he will need to do it again as a webelos
  15. I think what T164Scoutmaster is trying to say, is he has some Webelos coming up and provided they have earned the arrow of light, then they have completed all the requirements for the rank of BoyScout. That is the way I understand it. If I am wrong please let me know. He has 12 boys who are getting the scout rank. But his dilemma is, how can he get the rank for these boys if he does not have an advancement report. They have already met the requirements. I would say that if you are still having problems order them from scoutstuff.org T164Scoutmaster Did all 12 of your crossover
  16. Lisa Take this for what you want. I have seen a lot of posts about 'maybe the lad was uncomfortable' and things like that. Maybe you ought to try another BOR for teh boy. maybe while you are out camping. That might be his element. Maybe when he is having fun he will give better answers. Maybe he needs to remember that scouts is not all meetings in the winter inside. That there are other activities. I would say give the boy another shot, like someone said, maybe he was having a bad day. THen again maybe he just doesn't have the scout spirit. I don't know. If it
  17. Thank you all for your input. Even though we are getting off track. I have been looking at the council site and asking about BALOO training. Anyway. I have things planned. Everything is set and ready to go. I have my tour permits, no inspection needed because it is an approved council site. I was just looking for some help with parents who make no contact for 2 1/2 months and when we do get to talk to them they are about going caming and not the meetings. Anyway on that subject, I tried calling the parent today in reference to getting the money for the food. No contact
  18. If you are looking for something that takes a little work, for an easter project try this. Get a couple of large baloons. 12" should do. Take a things of yarn and soak it in some sugar water. Make sure that there is a lot of sugar. Draw a line in the baloon (Marker will work best) the size that you could put a small stuffed animal in. Start wrapping the sugar water soaked yarn around the inflated balloons. Maker sure that you have good coverage everywhere except where you have thte opening drawn. When you have this done. let it dry. It must be fully dry. Now pop the
  19. I just thought of something that I saw at a Day camp around here that you might be interested in. It was a little game. The camp personell took a 2x4 and cut a groove down the middle the long way. Big enough to have a clay target to stand up in. Then the set it up on a table with a tarp under it and let the boys throw golf balls to break the clay targets. Boys love breaking things. Have a bucket of candy and let every boy who plays get a piece and every boy who breaks a target gets 2. There are also some other things that I saw that were pretty cool.
  20. I ubderstand that being CM and BALOO training are not the same. It is just that my district has not had BALOO for me to take this year. I do plan on taking it as soon as it becomes available. I was simply stating that the CM is letting me plan this trip and he is there if I run across any problems.
  21. With the planning that we would be doing, we would ask that both packs have their own Tour Permit, just to make sure that the insurance covers everybody. But that is something that I would have to take up with the DE just to make sure. As for the PWD, we have small packs, so that shouldn't be an issue(This message has been edited by SctDad)
  22. Has anyone ever done activities that involve more than one pack, on something that is not a district or council activity. We live in a small county and there are three small packs in our county. There is one that does not participate in many district activities and they tend to do their own thing. The other pack that I have made contact with seems to be very interested in combined activities. One of the leaders seems to want to get together and do things like camping trips and the such. Has anyone tried this before. Is there anything that I should be aware of. Or is this a g
  23. Yes we have a BALOO trained person going, the CM is BALOO. He has let me do most of the planning due to the fact that I will be taking over as CM next year (Probably this fall) and he wants me to learn. I already have all the paperwork approved by the council, so everything is in line with the regs. I have also already checked on campsite inspections, they are not needed since this is a city nature center and it is consistantly inspected by the council.
  24. I could only wish to go ouut in the woods in a place like Alaska. I guess I am in the wrong part of the country. Some of the things that you are talking about sound great. I have to agree with you AK. Sounds like you have a great understanding of how to enjoy the outdoors and still leave no trace. I think your understanding is what the LNT program is supposed to be about.
  25. I am looking at some of the same problems. We have our first Cub Scout Campout this weekend. We are looking at 40% chance of rain saturday night. I will be talking to the parents this week about what they would like to do. Watching the weather right now they are saying late saturday and saturday night. I am hoping that it is just sprinkles. I am also going to tell the parents to expect rain. AND BRING RAIN GEAR. I think if we are ready for it with rain flys and dining flys then we should be OK. I also think that I will need to tell them to make sure they waterproof everything in
