  1. You did the right thing. You are required to report any abuse or neglect. This can also be in the line of child endangerment. You signed up because you believe in the program. That is why. And you believe that the program is good for the boys.
  2. Well here is some advice from me just coming from a campout this weekend. BE FLEXIBLE PLan things that the boys can do not only as a group, but with their family too. This will make it possible to not only have fun as a group, but for the parents to have some quality family time. Another piece of advise, take several decks of cards. I found that the cards that I had the boys had a great time. They played games like go fish and war. It can be the little things that make for a good campout. As for the adults, don't forget to break up the chores. Cooking, cleaning, building the campfire. Make sure that the boys are supervised if they are helping with anything. Good Luck, and remember, enjoy yourelf too. YIS SctDad P.S. Don't forget the S'mores
  3. I once heard that the An Hour A Week slogan was for the parents, and for the leaders it could be figured as "An hour a week, per Cub Scout" That, I think is a little more accurate.
  4. Good. I am getting some great feedback. Now that I am getting the feed back I will elaborate some more on what I have completed so far. Online Classes Youth Protection Tiger Den Leader Cubmaster Cub den Leader Committee member Fast Start Safe Swim Safety Afloat I attend regular Round Tables Not too much training before the fall, and I am looking at losing the person who is our cubmaster and BALOO person I am thinking about getting together with some of the others and trying to set up training.
  5. I am looking for some information. I am going to be taking over as Cub Master next year and I know I need to get all of my training. Which training do I need to take first and so on.
  6. In order for someone to teach CPR and certify people, they must be certified as an instructor. This is true for either AHA or ARC. They can have only certain number of students to each instructor. As for the assistant instructor, I do not know specifics, but I try to use certified instructors. These are things that you may wabt to look into. If you ask an instructor, they should be able to give you answers. If they get defensive then they may be doing something that you did not want to know about. I hope you understand what my babbling is about.
  7. Apache Bob Your grandson wouldn't happen to be with the Croatan lodge would he. I know we just had our ordeal last weekend. I was supposed to go and seal my brotherhood, but I was unable to make it. I will probably be doing this in the spring due to scheduling conflicts. Congrats to everyone who has completed their ordeal and welcome to the brotherhood.
  8. fgoodwin you do know that April has been around here at the forums for a while right??? Anyway, I believe that you are refering to the OA flap. But there are some other things out there as flaps too, but they are generally limited to the OA.
  9. I can see where everyone is coming from with the Berets. I have to wear one with my uniform when I go to drill with the NG. For standard everyday use and wear, they suck. No shade for your eyes, they are hard to shape right and keep worn right, and they smell funny when you sweat a lot. For a class A head gear for special occasions, I think they would be appropriate. They are sharp. I think their place is for special occasions. I would prefer to wear my patrol cap anytime. BUT NEVER AT A SCOUT FUNCTION. that would just be wrong and against all the rules. That is my opinion, and I am stickin' to it.
  10. Yes everyone is right. I have not been to NCS yet. I have a lot of other training to get through. THis was just an idea that was brought up and some discussion was had. As for when it will be held. THis is for next year. Maybe. All depends on how we do things. There are already several events that are scheduled for this summer. I just threw this idea out to one of my commissioners. This is just a plan on paper right now, we will see how things go in the future with the actual set up. That is why I am just looking for some ideas
  11. I was talking with some of my district staff the other day and told him about some of the Cub Scouting programs that we did at the camp that I worked for when I was a young scout. We had Cub Scout weekends betwen Boy Scout camp Weeks. It was the same program for multiple weekends, but it made it more flexible for Packs as they had several choices as to when they would go. I am looking for some information. What kind of programs would you suggest. There will be two time frames to do this stuff. Starting after Lunch till just before dinner on saturday night, and then Sunday after breakfast til lunch time I know that I am going to get a lot of information on this. I am looking for that. Things like RULES, REGS, and common pit falls that people have run into. So FIRE AWAY. Let me knwo what I can do for teh best Camping for the council.
  12. I was watching TV the other night and saw something that I thought would make a great song to go with the day camp themes or other out door adventures. Indiana Jones Movie theme I think that is what I am going to try to use for our slide show/tiger round-up
  13. Gold Winger I am gonna guess that your reference to damage control comes from the Navy. In a way you are right. Steam can be used to smother a fire. But in enclosed spaces where you can trap the and prevent the escape of the steam, it is an effective method. But we are using open areas, tents and grass fires. Steam is not effective in these fires. One other thing that you might wnat to consider if you are trying to combat a ground cover fire, (ONLY IF CAN BE DONE SAFELY), is to use standard steel tools, rakes, shovels, and maddox axes to remove the fuel (Leaves, sticks, and pine straw) I hope this answers your qustions. Always remember, BE SAFE, there is no shame in saying you cannot do something dangerous
  14. I am one of two den leaders that we have. I hqave tal the other and he thinks all of this is a great idea.
  15. There was a question posted about what water does to a fire. As a recent graduate of the Louis Garland Fire Academy (DOD fire Academy) I can tell you a few things about Fire Behavior. Water does not smother a fire unless you have extremely large amounts of water. Gold Winger is right. Applying water to the fire lowers the temperature of the burning material to a point below its flash point/flame point. Therefore stopping the burning process. Yes you should take into account your own safety when you are considering what to do with a burning tent. Saying that the first tent is a loss is probably a good thing. Then stating that you need to protect the other tents around it is also a good thing. Put water on them to prevent them from reaching their flash point. If you have any other questions on this matter feel free to contact me and I will help as much as I can. YiS SctDad
  16. There is a lot more to the fire extinguishers than just having them and using them. There are several questions that you must answer. What kind on extinguishers are you getting. A, B, C, Combo, Pressurized water (I think this would work best) I would aviod the chemical ones based on what kind of fires that you will be fighting On the same note, how are you going to refill them after use. When picking your extinguishers you need to think about the type of fire that you are fighting. Ground cover is class A What kind of training are you gonna have. A trained person can make a fire extinguisher effectiveness increase by 60% to 80%. If your camp is set on going with the fire extinguishers then here is my suggestion. 2 1/2 gallon pressurized water extinguisher. This if for the reason of ease and use. First most if the fires that you will probably be fighting will be ground cover fires (Or Class A). Plain water is good for these. You can break up the stream with simply your finger or thumb giving you more effective water use. Now there is the question of, we used it how do we refill it. The pressurized water ext are great because you can just go through, relieve all the pressure, fill with 2 1/2 gallons of water, (Hey go figure) and hook up a standard air compressor filling it with air pressure until the guage is in the green. That easy. When you are don for the year, drain out all the extinguishers and store. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact me.
  17. Here is a link to a post that we did some discussion on before http://www.scouter.com/forums/viewThread.asp?threadID=172198 If you look at some of the toy stores they have the cardboard blocks that you flod up and put together. They look like bricks and you can build a small caslte. You can make a catapult and use bean bags to knock down the walls. I hope this helps with all the other suggestions. Are you feeding them. You may want to look into a little research about how they ate in those times. I will see what I can find.

  19. Clyde No Bears crossing. Just the one wolf to Bear. I was slightly misleading on the flag retirement. I meant closing out ceremony and having the flags taken down and back to the staging area. But I think that I will try to incorporate a nice flag retirement ceremony. The American Legion (Our CO) has plenty. I will have to look through the box to see if I can find a cotton one instead of all of the nylon ones. I might even use a seperate fire bin. I have a few ideas. I have one question, how would you do this with refreshments being served afterwards. Would you have the refreshments farther back or would you have the refreshments served in the begining. I will check with the Webelos parents and see if they would be interested in getting a sheet cake.
  20. They crossed so late because they had some things that they still had to earn. So we did not cross them in Feb.

  22. Thank you Tokala I managed to find this information by going through all of the other posts, but you put it all together in one. Thank you all for the information and help. I did learn some things about what i Need to watch out for.
  23. I was once told that the DE Job is to meet FOS goals and to start new units. If I am wrong than I am sorry. My opinion is that the DE needs to work on getting more volunteers for the District level positions, not filling those positions. Also, I don't think we need more units. We need quality units. I can go around and start 10 new units if I really tried. But in 1 year are those units still going to be there. I think that quality units are better than quantity of units. Just for reference, my district covers two counties. My county is a small farming county. RIght now we have 3 Cub Scout packs that are chartered. One of them only has 1 Tiger. And I think they have about 5 other boys in 2 dens. They do not do things with the council and they do not follow the outdoor guidelines. No tour permits, no day camps, no Cub camping at the council or district level. I think that is taking away from the boys. I have heard that they say the boys don't want to do it. The other has a medium amount of boys and they are fairly active from what I understand. I am working with them to do some combined activities. Now my pack is small too. 5 tigers, 1 wolf, and 2 Webelos that are getting ready to cross over. We go on council trips, fill out tour permits for our campout this month, and attend the PWD and Day camps along witht eh leaders going to the program extravaganza to find out what is going on this upcoming year. We are building this with trying to get new tigers here soon and hopefully adding each year. I think that 1 or 2 quality units would make much better sence than 3 - 5 small units doing thier own thing Sorry that took so long but I had to support my message.
  24. Cub Scouter Award I know that there are a lot of people who like to quote the books, so here is one to answer the question that is posed. Here is the link to the page where this informaiton can be found http://www.scouting.org/cubscouts/resources/CSLeaderRecAwards.aspx Here is the requirements for the Cub Scout Leader (Note: It does Den Leader or Anything like that. Just says leader.) Tenure -Complete two years as a registered adult leader in a Cub Scout pack. Training -Complete Fast Start training, if available for your position. Complete New Leader Essentials and specific training for any Cub Scouting position. -Complete Youth Protection training. -During each year of tenure for this award, participate in a Cub Scout Leader pow wow or university of Scouting, or attend at least four roundtables. Performance Do five of the following: -Assist in planning a pack program that results in advancement in rank by a minimum of 50 percent of pack members each year. -Serve as an adult leader related to a pack that earns the national Quality Unit Award. -Serve as leader of a blue and gold dinner, pinewood derby, space derby, raingutter regatta, field day, picnic or other Cub Scout pack activity. -Give leadership to a promotional effort that results in at least 60 percent of pack families subscribing to Boys? Life magazine. -Develop or update a Tiger Cub or Cub Scout den activity book listing local places to go, things to do, costs, distances, etc., for the five Tiger Cub areas, or for at least 12 Cub Scout themes. -Give leadership to planning and conducting a pack service project. Organize participation of a pack in the Cub Scout Academics and Sports program. -Help conduct two annual pack Friends of Scouting campaigns. -Serve as a leader for members of your pack attending a Cub Scout day camp or resident camp. -Serve one year as pack trainer, during which time 75 percent of registered pack leaders complete basic training for their positions. I know there is a lot of stuff to read but it is right there in black and white. This is for the knot. There is nothing saying that you cannot award them a nice certificate of appreciation.
  25. I see the point with the "what happens if the boy falls in" I will remidy that with a life ring and/or pole. I will try talking to the ranger at the camp. I myself can say that I have woke up several nhundred times in a sleeping bag with a rifle at my side in the armed forces. and I have had scouting and camping experience before. I thank all for the advise. If you have any more pitfalls that I may need to be aware of please feel free to let me know.
