Hello and welcome. I am also in NC Welcome to the Campfire and grab a cup of coffee. For some information, there is a University of Scouting coming up in Raleigh, on the 1st of November. I know it is a long drive, but it may be something that you are interested in. There appears to be a lot of interesting classes. Here is the link to the course information http://www.doubleknot.com/openrosters/DocDownload.asp?orgkey=382&id=44962 I would be going except I have another scouting event on that day.

I was talking to one of our committee memebrs and they were approached by a coworker at the Corrections Center. The Coworker wanted to have his motorcycle club help out with a fundraiser. What I was thinking was a "Send a Cub To Camp" ride to help to send the boys to our summer encampment this year. Have them organize a ride through town and use the funds towards the cost of camp. Now I know that there is a statment on the back of the Money earning application that says that boys should earn their own way, so I was thinking about setting up a lunch and activities at the end of the ride. Before anyone asks this would be a stict NO ALCOHOL EVENT. I just know that with the way we have a lot of people wanting to ride motorcycles around here in the spring and stuff, I thought that this woudl be a good idea. There is nothing on the Money earning application that says anything about this specifically. I am just looking for some pointers. (As s side note, I am in the emergency services field and I am very aware of the unlawful motorcycle clubs, and have been trained on how to identify them. Just so that everyone is aware of my standings. That is also another reason why I am looking for advice)

(This is actually a Spin Off, but I couldn't get it to work) I saw the post about the cigar box banjos and it got me to thinking about soemthing that I was think of. Everyone has a small keepsake box. They are great for holdong patches and neckerchief slides. How does everyone here think Cigar boxes would go over if I brought them down for Cubs to make into keepsake boxes. I knwo that there is the Smoking issue with the Cub Scouts, but I have a medium supply of the wooden ones and I think that would be a great project for the boys.

I am not understanding this. You are saying that there HAS to be a parent on ALL activities. We have a Cub Scout Encampment and a Webelos Encampment Coming up tis summer. Each one it 4 days/3 NIghts. The council has put out that there is a recommended minimum of 1 Adult to 5 Boys. (Tigers are not allowed to this encampment) It also says that all parents may come along, but that is how things break down as a recommended minimum. (This is a council sponsored event) How is that different?

I have to agree that it goes in the same location as it would on the blue uniform. But depending on how long it is going to be before they earn their webelos badge, you may want to consider getting them a rank holder. $1 at most scout shops. THis way if they will be earning the Webelos soon then they will not have to sew it on just to take it right back off. But dont get me wrong. I am all for sewing on the rank, it is just that the Cub Scout ranks are not made the same as the boy Scout ranks.

Define your long Term Camping. Do you mean summer Camp? But for things like weekend camp, why do they need cots. I understand the comforts are great, but that is why we have sleeping pads. If you really are looking for something that does not require floor, try Military Surplus. Look at the shelter-halfs. They are small, but they might be something that you are looking for.

I saw one this weekend that was surprisingly light weight and strong. The guy said that it was cut from the flower part of the catcus. The guys mother-in-law lives in New Mexico and that is where he got it. I think it was actually lighter than my commercial collapsible pole. Anyway, thanks for the help. Keep the ideas coming. I will be looking for a good stick this week.

Eagle92 Had a good time. Next time I think we can skip the rain and cold wind. The banquet I think is a conflict for our Cub Schedule. I think that I heard that the banquet is on the weekend of the 8th. We will be at the Salute Festival that weekend. If for some reason we do not Go I will see about coming. Do you have some information you can e-mail me? Anyway, I was looking for the help with the carving. I am going to be looking for a staff soon and I am looking to make it interesting.

I was watching some people at our Fall Fellowship for the OA this weekend, and I saw some of them carving out their hiking staffs that they got while they were there. I was wondering if there was anyone out there that might be able to point me to a website that can help me with some carving patterns. I am thinking about doinng one myself. Also any lace patterns for handles would be nice.

I think that thing with the trademark designs is this, (i kow that I am gonna be corrected if I am wrong) the place that you have the design done by cannot profit from the use of the trademarked logos. The shop that is doing our is doing it very cheap. T-shirts at cost, not art work fee (saving $45 an hour) and other discounts on labor and ink. I think that he is honest and fair. Our shirts are probably going to be about $6 - $8 each. As for where should you go. I would say check with local businesses. THey might be able to help you with this. And then if they do give you a grat discount, you can give them a nice thank you note. Other customers will see that they help the scouts. IMO, stick local as much as possible.

Thats what I am hoping. We have our Fall Fellowship starting tonight. so I should be able to talk with a bunch of people from the chapter and see if there are soem of the young arrowman that would be interested in this program. I ask all of this becuase it seems like some of the ideals of the past have gone to the wayside in recent years and I would like to see some of them return. I know that it is going to take some work, but I think that if I can get these young arrowman to remember why they do this, it moght be a good program.

I am posting this to see who out there has had involvement with OA helping out on Cub Scout Pack Overnighters. If so how did they helpout and what kind of things did they do. I am thinking about trying to start this program back up and see what happens. Anybody got anyadvise on what I can do and some pointers to help out. Thanks SctDad Ordeal 94

So for the walletr, would you say that they could paint the craftsman pin on the outside so that they remember what it was for and maybe the Webelos badge on the other. Then fill it with free chore coupons??? Anybody Got recomendations for a possible use of a can as another material. Suggestions on what to make with the can, if you have them

I have a question about the Webelos Craftsman Activity Badge Requirement 4. 'Make four useful items using materials other than wood that you and your Webelos den leader agree on, such as clay, plastic, leather, metal, paper, rubber, or rope. These should be challenging items and must involve several operations.' I have some Ideas but I wanted to run it by some of the forum members. #1 - I have some wallet kits. I got them from Oriental trading company. They are the type that you get from daycamp that you would have to just lace them together. Would this be too simple for this badge. Or could this count as one of the activities. #2 - I have a contact that is going to help us with a little project possibly when we are at a campout next month. He uses 550 cord to make duck-call holders. Basically a lanyard style that makes a loop and at the base of it there is 4 loops to attach things. I was thinking it would be a good thing that they could attach things like compass's, whistles etc. This would require making the lanyard and the knots to have as the loops for hanging things from. #3 - Last year we made some homemade clay. I was thinking about having the boys make the clay, form some style dishes, bake them dry at home, and them bring them in to paint and decorate them for the finish. I think this one well qualifies for the requirement. Anyone have any advise on these projects, or suggestions on what they can do for other projects. Some help would be appreciated.

I have to agree with John in KC on this one. We are chartered through our local American Legion. Get in contacct with your Local Post and see what they have for youth programs. Ours did not have the youth programs that the Commander would have liked to see and he jumped at the chance to charter us. They even provided us with a fairly large room to use as our CubScout Room, to use as we needed. They have been great. Not to mention that they have let us use the large hall ofr our B&G and other Pack activities as we needed. Chrck with those organizations and see what they have to offer. Good luck, and I hope that all works out for you.

I know that there are many things in the G2SS about floats and Hayrides. But what I was wondering is, has anyone found in their years of using floats, what has worked for additional safety measures. Spotters etc. Just looking to draw from experience.
-
We have made some decisions about the veterans day parade. Mostly after we looked at how long the parade route was. Half a mile. That is fine for the boys to walk that short distance. But on the other hand we will have a trailer available for the boys to use as a float for our christmas parade in December. I think when we do this we will have adult leaders walking along the side of the trailer as a secondary safety. We as adults will keep our own safety in mind but be on the watch for boys that might get hurt. SAFETY FIRST

I apologize for seeming like I am trying to shoot down this young scouts motivation. I just know that there are many here who jump at the chance to point out certain rules. I thought that I would try to give the information a lil easy. Do I see a problem with him helping as a Tiger. The way that I always understood Tiger Cubs, was the time that they had to spend with their adult partner. But if he wants to be there as a second set of hands then I guess that would be OK. If he is close to becoming 1C, then I guess he is about ready. I would see if he wanted to help out with a Wolf Den if there is one available, then he can start on his path to helping mold new young scouts. Maybe when he is helping out, he can try to recruit other new DC's. Encourage the young lad.

WHo IS this mysterious DC CD

I can say that with as many boys that you have 2 dens of 10 would be more than enough. As everyone here will tell you. Get trained. Fast Start, NLE, Tiger DL Training. THis will help. If the CM and them won't split down the group, you could go the firm route and tell them that you will lead 10 boys, and that is it. But we are all adults and I think that you shoudl be able to work this out. As for the Code of Conduct. First have the boys come up with a set of rules. Let them decide, that way they cannot say the rule are silly or too much. a good 4-7 rules should be fine. Then use a behavior candle/jar. If using a candle light it at the begining of the meeting, if the boys act up, put it out. When they are behaving again, light it. When it burns to a certain point, reward them. If using them a jar, use marbles. Have the boys put marbles in or remove them based on behavior (Have the offenders remove them). When the jar is full find a reasonable reward. Boys like rewards. (and I secretly like sending them home hopped up on sugar...Just kidding) Hope this helps.

I am not familiar with anyplace that does this. But there has been a large gap in my scouting time. BBut using common sense, lets look at the idea. THere are several high adventure bases that apparently do this. Try contacting them to see how they do it. But I would day that the best way to handle this is like we handle any other shooting sports. Use an acceptable range with safety areas, down range area, and waiting area. Proper supervision is also key. And one other things that I think that is very important, make sure you give that every so important disclaimer 'Don't try this at home' Hope this helps. SctDad

I would applaud him for his drive to help the younger scouts in their path in scouting. But look over the organization table with the boy first. YOu will notice that there is no Den Chief for the Tigers. They have the Adult partners present. For Wolf, Bear, and Webelos dens they have den chiefs. I would have the boy try his hand at New Scout Patrol PL first. or maybe something like quartermaster, or scribe. GIve him somethign as an introductory position and if next year he is still interested, have him then look into Den Chief training and helping out. I think that he is looking to get back to Cub Scouts too soon and that the boys that he just left may not see him as a leader when he shows up. GIve him a little time and let the Cubs get some new blood in there.

Bruce If you find one let me know. I think it would be great to have. That way, not only could I go through and plpan our upcoming meetingsbut I would be able to save the plans for future denleader use.

Maybe they have it to make sure that they keep the scoutmaster happy. Should something happen to his. NOBODY likes an unhappy scoutmaster

Thanks GW I was a Police Explorer when I was younger, I just did not know all the history. know that there were different programs that provided for the Co-ed program. I also remember when I was in the Varsity Scouts were a group of Senior Scouts that did high adventure and more extreme outings. This has apparently changed to the Venture Program I guess.
