  1. I guess we should all be blessed to live in an area like BW. Where the funding of scouts is not an issue, therefore everyone can afford to go out and get enough uniform pants and civilian equipment to supply all scouts. I hope our areas can become this wealthy soon. Until then I guess we are just a bunch of non-proper leaders who make up our own rules as we go along.
  2. I used the Cobra stitch, and made an interesting neckerchief slide. Yes I even tried it out. I think that with some of these things I have enough to finish out the Craftsman. Thanks for the help guys. If you have any more advise, or suggestions please let me know.
  3. I was looking at some of the things that you can make with 550 cord. I was thinking about trying to make a little survival kit. Seeing if there was a way to put some fishing string and hooks in it also. maybe that can be something that can be done when making it. This would provide not only string and items for fishing, but it could provide the large/strong string and the little strings that you may need for survival. Or maybe making a Neckerchief slide. Just making a short cobra stitch set up. I think that I might try this today.
  4. Hey thanks for the help. THe link looks great for an instructional page. That is kind of what I made. Also thank you for not letting this post go dead.
  5. I agree that Full uniform looks best. BUt it is expensive. OK lets make this simple. Can anyone show me with a link or page number in the Uniform Guide that specifically says NO CAMO. Be it clothing or gear. I am not talking in a memo to the council in California, (That would be a council rule) or where one DE was being a jerk and going way overboard. I am looking for a published National Policy. I am looking for printed national publications. If you can show me then I will rethink my position.
  6. I have to agree with what some of the others are saying. Webelos are signed off by the DL. Not the parents. Try having the Webelos opening the pack meeting and showing off thier new skills by reciting the Scout law and Promise. That would be kind of a checks and balances system without calling anyone out. Also, collect all the books and mark off the achievements for advancements. Also, if they have not earned the required Activity Pins, Citizen, Fitness, and one other from a different group, then they have not met the requirements for Webelos. Plain and simple. Also, yo
  7. Has anyone here every tried doing activities with Paracord (AKA 550 Cord) with their Cubs. I found some directions for one using a Cobra Stitch. I was thinking about having my Webelos make a lanyard to hang things like compass, whistle and the such. This one that I found makes a nice lanyard that provides 4 dangles for attachments. I also have thought of some plans to make a loom that will help the boys hold the things straight. Anyone else have crafts that they have come up with. If so do you know where I can find the directions.
  8. OK I am sorry. I may have jumped to conclusions. Maybe I just need to read a little more history. I had heard about the Islamic Jihad claiming responsibility for the attack, but I had not heard about Hezbolah. I am now a little more educated.
  9. I guess that I will have to continue to be a bad leader in BW's eyes because I find that there are more important things to harp over than the color of the pants that my Cubs are wearing. I do recommend that the parents buy the uniform pants, but I do not require them due to the cost and knowing how families in my pack may not always have the money. I guess I will also be a bad leader if I continue to use my military ruck, because it was free. If you want to, feel free to send me a quality back[ack from a civilian manufacturer. I will gladly use it. Other than that, I may al
  10. Careful John, you might be seen as advocating improper uniforming by telling parents that wearing Walmart Blue pants is acceptable. I really don't care. BW, as for your mention of the WIDE variety of inexpensive gear out there that is not Camo. Yes I agree, if you have the money, and you find something that you like, go for it. But there is NOTHING cheaper than FREE> That is what ALL of my military gear cost me. Rucksack, sleeping bag, and most of the boots that I wear. Why go out and buy a $100 back pack when I have a perfectly good one for free. That is why I use the Milit
  11. I tell my parents that the best suggestions is to sew them on. My wife has agreed to help those who do not know how to sew. (Even though I just find that hard to believe) She said that she would sew the patches on with the machine and charge $1 per patch, and $0.50 goes back to the pack funding. Helps out the pack and pays her for her time. Figure Council, Numbers (3 of them) World Scouting Crest and Ranks may cost $6 but $3 goes back to the pack funding. Win-Win. On the original topic, I have always prefered sewing, holds better and looks better. Personal opinion.
  12. Eagle92 I agree in full with you. But from the sounds of some of those posting, the only uniform that should be worn is the FULL uniform. Anything less should not be worn. THe other thing that I notice is that the debate over uniforms hits 2 pages in two days, when some one asks about suggestions or help on actual issues that are worth anything, you may get 5 posts before it goes dead. I just think that camo pants is something that is not that importance when we have so many other issues.
  13. I have to agree with Eagle 92 on this one. I know that there was a topic in the past where I mentioned that I use my Military MOLLE Ruck and I was told that using it was a big no no because it was military camo. I guess if I was in the areas where a lot of the "Experts" and "Uniform Police" on this board are from then I would just have to give up scouting. I mean I have already spent close to $150 to get my son and I in scouting and get us our shirts. But since I could not afford the pants I am a poor leader. I guess I will also have to tell all the other boys AND adults in the
  14. I think people need to find something that is a little more productive with time. Ask you District and/or council. If they do not threaten to send you home or something like that, then they obviously don't have a problem. I wore camo pants to Day camp last year and no one said anything As for the military saying anything about it. Here is the ruling (at least with the Army.) You may wear the uniform parts, as long as there is no insignia or such worn on it. IE Remove Rank. Yes, I too saw the pants at ordeal weekends and such. I know what Eagle 92 is refereing to. I saw
  15. "But i'll just remind everyone that someday soon those young people will be strapping on explosives and will be looking for you, me, and our allies around the world. In the end, this is not really funny. Our own sons are being killed by people like this. " Did we enter into a war with Hezbollah that I missed orders for. I might want to check in with my former unit. They might be short manpower for this one. Come on now. Not every muslim, or arab will be blowing us up. Do you research.
  16. I can agree with Nike on this one. Maybe have some snack trays for those present to munch on before and/or after the presentation. But remember this is a banquet. So I would be careful not to make it too much like a Pack Meeting.
  17. If Sarah Palin wants to write a book about the things that she did in her election campaign, then that is not going to be the worst. I mean comeon now, Michael Moore has written worse. And he has movies too. If anyone on this forum was approached about writing a book about their experiences in scouting and was offered $1 Million, then I think most of the people here would probably go for it. What you do with the money is up to you. So she has a way to make money. It is legal and her choice. If you have a problem with it, DON"T BUY THE BOOK!!!
  18. Here's how we are doing it this year When they sign up at round up they pay $7.50 (Membership and BL for the res of the year.) After that we sell popcorn and give the boys incentive. (And we did fairly good this year. Highest selling pack in the district. I do not know how many others sold though. Sell half a sheet (13 Items) and we will pay registration Here is the math Worst Case $9 Tins X 13 = $117 $117 Total (Profit = $37.44) registration and ins. = $11.00 $37.44-$11.00=$26.44 still going to the pack Sell Full Sheet (25 Items) we pay registration and B
  19. Here is some suggestions Awards Group the boys together - Meaning all the boys that are getting Tiger come up at once with their parents and give a small statement about the things that it took to earn. Belt loops and Pins the same. And so on and so on. Try to have skits and songs that include all in the dens. Say, all the boys in the Wolf Den can do "The girl Scouts are coming" Have all the tigers sing "If you are a tiger and you know it" (In the tiger Book" Have the Webelos have a flag folding demonstration for the closing. I think that if you have things
  20. vol_scouter Tracking. Now that would be something that would not only be useful, but you can make it a great game. Yes tracking can be helpful and useful to some people. Some of the scouts may go onto a career in Rescue services. Land Tracking/Search and Rescue is an important skill. I have been thinking about playing some tracking games with my Cubs.
  21. Eagle92 wanna see what you are in for, come'on down to one of our den meetings. Our tigers are doing a Go-See-It at the fire station tonight. If you are ever interested you know where to get a hold of me at.
  22. I have a question when it comes to global warming and polution. Who is going to go over to Iraq and tell them to cap off their black smoke producing factories. There was one brick factory near where I was that had 68 smoke stacks pumping out that black smoke and about 20 that were not inuse at the time. Even if WE as the United States went completely eco friendly, there are still countries that are working aginst us.
  23. You want energy efficient cars!!!! Make them COST Efficient for us poor people who are driving the old gas hogs and polution machines because that is all we can afford. I live in a rural area, take my power, or any of the other country boys power and heads will roll. If the seas are rising so high and there is a drought, here is a NOVEL idea. More desalination plants. Make the water fresh, and pipe it inland. Does it take the HS graduate to figure out these simple things. Does a 4 year degree in politics kill off common sense. Stop thinking "Spend money" and start thinking like
  24. I have often thought of this factor myself many times. There is one district in my council that is lacking a DE. Eagle92 you may know which one. It is in the county next to mine. But before anyone thinks that this would be too great a commute, we live in a part of NC where traveling between several counties in one day to go to work or something like that is normal. Some of the things that stops me from doing this right now are my vehicle, I would need something a little more fuel efficient. And my education. I do not have the required degree. Not even close. And without know what
  25. I have to say that I think that there are no out-dated skills. Just unseasoned leaders, who need to see the true meaning of scouts (even if that means heating them up to 500 degrees and rubbing cooking oilon them)
