  1. "Scoutfish, I hope your spine is OK from all this bending-over-backwards you're doing. Is there any way a kid could convince you he's an actual atheist? Not that I can see." WEll, first, he'd have to actually say that he is an athiest." I hate liver, I hate tripe. I hate hog brains. I will not even knowingly eat elephant, horse, cats, or seals. I will not eat sushi or any kind of squid or conch. But that's not the same as saying I am a vegetarian. Yeah, you are arguing a hypothetical case. Well, what if in a hypothetical situation, the boy was an alien from Mars? What if he was an actual Hindu god. He could still say he doesn't believe in God, but he sure wouldn't be an athiest. Point is, you see everything as either Believing in "God" or athiest. Nothinmg else. But that's your flawed logic. There is so much more in between. People are not constrained by how you think. And BSA recognizes that . People are not constrained in the way I think, BSA recognizes that too. That's where the whole Non secular thing comes in. By saying that, they recognize that people might be reverent to and believe in a higher power without believing in a single "God" . Spine? Are you kidding me? I have not waivers oine bit inmy arguements to you. Yet you swing back and forth and argue hypotheticals and use what the ACLU and other athiets say as proof as to what BSA thinks. You say BSA thinks this or that, yet the people from BSA tell you otherwise every time. You do not have teh spine to admit the world is more than your thoughts and opinions and you do not recognize that there is ALOT of grey in between. Me and my big ole spine realize not everybody thinks or feels like I do. They do not use the same reasoning and do not use the same logic I do. But me and my big ole spine don't care if people feel or believe different from me and me and my BIG SPINE do not fel the need to take issue with them for it. My spine is so big that I am not threatened by theirs or your beliefs being diferent. My big spine doesn't feel the need to classify everybody outside my opinions as only this or that - because I know there is so much more. But you feel the need to stop, squash and destroy those who do not feel or agree with your own beliefs. You cannot stand people to be diferent or be happy with their own ideals or opinions. It scares you! Now tell me who has spinal isseus!!
  2. I did alot of searching, digging and looking online. And I found out nothing! So I emailed my DE who sent me this reply: "Council - covers all 8 counties in southeastern NC (Hoke, Scottland, Robeson, Bladen, Columbus, Brunswick, New Hanover, Pender) District - NECF - All of Pender and Northern New Hanover (North side of Eastwood Road to Wrightsville Beach, down Market Street to about 23rd street. Everything 23rd to downtown is Coastal District) We have 800 youth in our district, 3,589 in the council as of right now. That number will go up to around 5,000 by the end of the year. WE total 5,816 sq miles. New Hanover is the smallest county, but has the highest population.
  3. So being a CM and not a SM, I have to ask what may very well be a stupid question: Does/did this boy have a Firem'n Chit card? First offense of the nature he acted in would be the total revocation of the card. Next time would be sitting a trip out at home. 3rd time..let the boy go because even though a thick head isn't necessarily a banning issue, the continued life threatening endangerment of others is. If he's done this before or is he really does know better but doesn't care...then you probably won't get through to him. But he will become a great teaching example to the next one who thinks about it.
  4. "The BSA's stance, taken from what their representatives have said under oath, is that six-year-olds who are atheists can't join." Is that an exact qoute or did you put it in your terms Merlyn? Don't run from the question. And.... "If, for example, someone was insisting they aren't breaking the "no atheists" rule by using very contorted arguments to justify allowing a kid who has very clearly stated he's an atheist..." What? How do you figure? When and where did the boy "CLEARLY " say he was an athiest? Where did you get that Info? Not bthe OP who said ( and I quote) : " this kid said absolutely and definitively that there was no God." But you know, a person who truely believs in Quetzalcoatl, Shiva, and Lakshmi do not believe in "God" either. They will tell you that our god does not exist. Because to them, our "God" is not any god at all, just a false prophet or just a case of senility on our poart. So a boy can very definantly say there is no God, but be the furthesat thing from an athiest there is. And that's where BSA's policy on being non secular does in fact welcome that boy completely! (This message has been edited by scoutfish)
  5. Okay, I said what I said before. Yeah, it's contradictive, but it also shows the difference between logic and emotional rationing. But I will also say this: I had a friend who - a long time ago ( he was 9 at the time) showd another boy ( who was 7 at the time) his little boy parts. Well, his mom was baby sitting the younger boy at the time and walked in on them ( they were in my friends room at the time). WEll, that night, his dad - who was verty heavy handed wanted to know exactly what was going on, and why and how often it happened. He then beat the answer out of his son. Somehow, I was implicated in the evnt even though I was not only not there...but had been with my parents out of town by 200 miles while on vacation at my grandmothers place in Cape Hatteras. At first, my parents were mad at me until they realized that the boy gave times and dates that did not match up to when I was at mty friends house. He lived 5 miles away, and at 10 years old, I had to be driven there or picked up. Anyways, the point is this: THat boy gave out all kinds of info to his dad to make the beatings stop. Anything and everything that would make the beatings stop. If dad didn't like the answer, he whipped his belt hader and slung the boy around some until he got the answer he wanted. Of course, since the dad wasn't there ( and neither was I for that matter) how could he know what was true or not. How was he able toi ddetermine what was the truth or reliable or no? In the ned, the dad felt the info he got from his son was reliable , abd made a point to visit my parents to share this valuble information. I guess it really sucked when he found out we just got back into town about 3 hours ealier. That really punched a HUGE FREAKING hole in the story he beat out of his son. So toruture might not get you anything except what the torture thinks you want to hear...and naturally, if that's what you are wanting to hear, you may very well torture past the truth to get to what you want to hear instread of what really is. Again, I know very well that if somebody was to harm my son or wife....that I most likely will put logic and sane thought aside and go after them with no regret. But I do know later that I'll realize I was no better and regret what I did. Call it temporary insanity or temporary don't give a damn. But it is what it is, and probably what makes me human.
  6. Merlyn states: "No, that's not the BSA's stance; it might be your stance. The BSA's stance, taken from what their representatives have said under oath, is that six-year-olds who are atheists can't join. " Merlyn, did they actually say that under oath. Just like that? Are you quoting, or are those your terms? And as a registered member of the BSA in good standing.....am I not also a representative of BSA? And heres the kicker, what is the legality of anything a kid says. Is any operson under the age of 18 bound to anythiung they say, and if a 6 year old claims to be superman or batman, do we assume he is senile, psychologocally impaied or that he has personality issues? If he sates he believes in Santa Claus, do we take that as an absolute lifetime commitment and therefor consider him a Clausite? I always assumed you probably had kids. Sure, I could be wrong, but maybe you don't. Thing is, if you do have kids, you know thay can say and be committed to something with all their heart...for either 5 minutes or until something else piques their interest, then the thing before...ummm..whatever it was...is ummm...forgotten like it never existed to begin with. Me? My 10 1/2 year old changes his mind more than the clock changes time. From likes, dislikes, and even his beliefs. Now, you can make a lifetime judgement about what a kid says to you when they are 6 years old, but you'd be misunderstanding and holding a skewered view of that person as they grow up and as they live their life. Besides, go find a youth application ans find the part where that youth signs his name to the part that says he completely understands the scope and consequences of the form and that he agrees to completely and entirely commit to requiremenst of the form. Oh yeah...there is no place for a youth to sign. Only their parents.
  7. Nah, not a double standard, but a consideration of the youth and his mentality. In the OP, the boy is question just crossed over witha few others into trhe troop. So, the scout is at youngest, 10 1/2 or at his oldest , around 11, 11 1/2 ( depnding on his age as compared to the scouting year) Ate 10 or 11 years old, I do not expect any kid to have a 100% definant mindset on anything. But that's the whole thing about scouting and geting your Eagle: It's not a case of you are Eagle Material or not when you join the troop. It's a case of growing and maturing and learning towards that point. WE do not judge a brand new scout about wether he is Eagle material or not. We do not expect a brand new scout to be Eagle ready the first day he joins a troop no more than we expect a Tiger to be Arrow Of Light ready when he joins cub scouts. But we do know it's a learning experience. We trezach Tiger cubs the oath, law and motto. Wer don't expect then to already know it. WE then mentor them to become the kind of kids who not know, but live the scouting ideals. Same for Eagle. If we depended on boys to already know their stuff when they join a troop, to have the mindset and qualities of Eagle...how many would we have. 20 or 30 Eagles nationwide? Same for a boys expectation and his firm beliefs ...wethet over religion or what is wright or wrong..Ask a 10 old boy what is more important : Being loyal to a freind or family, or the right thing to do if it goes against that loyalty. Truth is, adults still strauggle with trhat one. But hopefully, they will at least know what to do wether they really do it or not. As for religion, a boy of ten will probably have no more belief that what his parents put in him. But by the time he is working on his EBOR and eagle projects..he ought to have a pretty good idea of what he thinks and believes. I'm just saying, at 10 1/2 or 11 ( whichever the boys is) I do not put a ton of weight on his beliefs , nor will I hold him to those beliefs as they may change 100 times before he is 18. He may become the next leader of American Athiests, but he might also be the next pope for all we know.
  8. Used to, our pack would get out a slip and slide and let the kids run around in it ( yawn). Or they wlould get out a sprinkler and let the kids run around in it ( double ywan). Last year, I asked to take over in the planning as the new CM For the first activity, we had a fishing trip/ cookout at a local sound park/pier. WE awarded ribbons for first catch, biggest catch, biggest variety, feed the most fish, most improved cast, first to get attacked by their bait, etc... just funny and hokey awards too. Second activity was going to Moores Creek National Battlefiled, which gae they plenty of room to run and burn off energy, but they also had a guided tour, got to hold period toys, and scale replicas of period firearms .We cooked hotdogs afterwards. THird trip was to the battleship USS North Carolina BB-55. Military stuff kids can climb on? Can't ever go wrong there! THIS YEAR: Our fisrt activity is going to be going to a paid ( maybe AAA? ) league baseball game. The boys are gonna lead the opening ceremony and there are fireworks afterward. All scouts in uniform get in free - everybody else is half price. SEwcond activity will be either bowling or another fishing tourny. Wicher one we do, we will do the other the next time. Thinking we might hold bowling i August due to our awesome humidity here in NC!
  9. Nah, it's not so much as ignoring a rule, but looking ta the person. BSA also says you need to be honest, trustworthy, clean, and friendly ..among other things too. But tell me you think all scouts around 10 years old are 100% honest all the time - never ever lie, decieve, or do less than honest things - are 100 % courteouis without fail - and never pick on or make fun of other kids....then you can expect a certified ands garanteed faith ( or lack of) . BSA's stance is ( is the most simplest of laymens terms): UNtil they are 18 and of legal adult age...anything they say is not taken as an absolute final statement. This would include their religous beliefs ( or lack of) their political views, their career aspirations, their total responcibility for their choices and much more. Again, the very first thing to consider about any under 18 youth in BSA is this: They have not signed anything saying they are bound to do anything. Why? Because it wouldn't be legal anyways. That's why mom, dad or a legal guardian has to sign a youth application. Then you figure BSA wants a chance to mentor as many kids as they can. By not holding a final binding opinion of kids while they are under 18, they can have a chance to mentor them.UNtil they are adults, I bet BSA doesn't push hard on a child who supports communism or a rascist govermnet style either. They would'nt kick out a kid who says he lies alot. And they won't kick out a boy who says he doesn't believe in "God" ( but does that mean all gods by any other name). Matter of fact, most of the kids who join scouting DO believe in Santa Claus, The Tooth Fairy, THe Ester Bunny, Cupid, the boogy Man, The Tidy Bowl man, and a slew of others. THis is also a viloation of many religions, and probably against atheism too, but nody really cracks down on the kids for that do we? Nah, cause they are just kids. I honestly have no issue with a boy being athiest , myself. But I do not put any more concrete finalization in it any more than I put finalizatiuon in a youth who says he's going to be a cop one day, a train engineer the next or in the Army the day after that. They think this today, think something entirely different tommorrow. Next week, they are not even on the radar compared to last week. Turns out he gets a job being s CPA, designing the ultimate car engine cooling systems, or something even less glamorous like designing ergonomic tooth brush handles. They are just kids. That simple.
  10. Nothing will change ...ever! THese people think they are on te morallym superior side of the fight. They think theyb are doing God's ( or their version of him) work. They do not see themselves at the radical nutjobs that they are and they will NOT be convinced otherwise. Osama Bin Laden is now a martyr and a saint all at the same time. Remember, trhey think there is no greater glory to God , and no greater act of faith - than to be killed while fighting in the name of Allah . THink of these nuts as mosquitos: You c an kill each one that atacks you, but the rest do not stop because you killed the previous ones. The only thing that will change is the named of the whoever takes charge.
  11. Wow! Tough topic for sure. I am of mixed felings and I also know that there is a difference between saying what I would do, and what I would actually do if I am in the situation myself. As far as waterboarding and torture...if we do it, are we not then no better than the ones we claim to be fighting? At that point, it isn't good against bad anymore, just us versus them. I mean, we say we are agaist opther countries governmenmts that abuse people and fredoms, but we think it doesn't apply to us in our quest to be the country we want to be. But are the other countries any different? They are doing whatever means they feel needs to be done to maintain thier status quo. So, we are the same with a different name. But then, I also realize it's easy to sit here and nit pick and judge whithout being in a position or responcibility and burdone myself. I'll put it this way> I do not believe in murder. I do not belive in "crime of passion" either...but I also know that if somebody was to kidnap my son or wife and torture, rape or maim them..I would have no issue or putting that person through their own hell. I could easily kill thenm or issue a dose of eye for an eye. Having a loty of time to think about it afterward, I may very well realize what I did was wrong, and I may very truely be remorseful for acting on it. But atbthe time I ws to learn of such a thing...I cannot say that I wouldn't go beserk and seek revenge. Maybe that's just a human reaction, no? Acting based on passion, and later regretting based on compassion and intellect. So, just sitting here safe and sound in my living room, I do not find and torture to be reasonable for a respectable society. But I also realize that when I personally lose a family member or I am the one in real and deffinant imminat danger ( being a soldier) I may feel and react differently. One last thing: I alsways wondered why we insist on sticking to and playing by the rules ( Geneva, UCMJ) of war when our agressors do not follow, care , or even use our own rules ( read limitations) against us. Inst that just what war ios: An all out who conqeurs who?
  12. And as somebody else mentioned earlier in the thread,.....Maybe this kid is in a state of temporary denial or disbelief because of us. Times like this are when we need to step back and make sure that we do not look at this boy through our eyes, but try to understand him through his own eyes and from his viewpoint. Matter of fact, our own veiwpoint doesn't really matter does it since we are not the ones who are being "judged" ...for lack of a better word. This kid may be in the position of having spent alot of time and faith in believing Micky Mouse was real, only to have that yanked away, and probably even laughed at by the people who put those beliefs in his head to begin with. Same thing for the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, Tooth Fairy, The Great Pumpkin, The boogy Man, etc.. and the list goes on depending on who you are and where you live. Then one day, the very people who pushed all that "belief " on you , and spent all that time hyping it up , yank the rug away and say that you are silly for believing it. Then comes God or whatever god you believe in. Unlike the Easter bunny who brought you eggs or candy, Unlike Santa who brought you toys and those dreaded underwear, unlike the toothfairy who took your tooth and left you a quarter, dollar or 5 dollars ( can you believe that is what my wife gives my son? ) Unlike the ones who left you physical evidence, ...your parents want you to believe in God because :"Trust us, he's real!" even without physical evidence as far as a young man or boy is concerned. And after everything else they so "trust us" pushed on ended up being a load of BS. And then we have the gall to question what or why he is thinking the way he does..after we are the ones who dropped bomb after bomb on him? We question his beliefs, his values and wether he has good judgement or morals? Really? Maybe it's the youth who should be judging us?
  13. " I looked at the wreckage no fault divorce laws were causing in the 1970s and said NO THANKS! " Nah, you have it soooo wrong! THose marrages were doomed anyways based on the attitudes and the commitment level( or lack of) on the part of those married. For example, me and my wife have at least 3 sbig stupid fights a year. And yeahm, they are big, they are stupid , and afterward, we wonder how we even had a fight over something sooo petty to begin with. Maybe we are both hardheaded and won't be the first to back down. Add to the fact we both have a touch of smartass in the mix...and it doesn't help either. But we understand that we do not have to agree on everything. WE understand that we will have different ideas, opinions, and thoughts about some things. WE also realize that even though it's a 50/50 partnership, it takes 100 % effort from each of us> WE understaood the meaning of the vows that said for richer or poorer and for sickness or health. Too many people jump into marrage too fast, with too little pre thought. I met my wife, became her rriend, then her best6 riend, trhen we dated for over 4 yars before we got engaged. WE knew each other and didn't jump into marrage hastily. WE knoiw it is work. No fault marrage will not cheapen a marrage at all, but gives an easy out scapegoat to those who want all the perks without the work or effort to get or maintain them. NC is a no fault state, yet after 16 years, I am still married even though almost all of my wife and I's friends who married before or around the same time we did are divorced..married again, and about to divorce again. Laws do not cheapen maragges or commitments...peoples attitudes do. But, I am not saying that you are wrong for not getting married. If it's not your thing, I also think you did great by not doing it.
  14. "Fish, Off point perhaps, but note that Allah is the SAME deity as the Judeo Yahweh and the Christian Jehovah. Different names for the same God." Nah, completely on point. A rose by any other name is a rose. Amber, yellow, sienna... The Boy may not believe in "God" but belive in god - by a different name. I watch people argue the about what kind of fish Talapia is. WEll, it isn't. It's many different kinds of fish used under a common marketing name because "Bottom dweling mud sucking algea eater just doesn't sound appetizing. But wether you call talapia or mud fish..it's still the same fish. The only difference might be the name. I also see people gush over Maui maui being a great food, but they wouldn't eat a dolphin fish. Same thing different name. People will try Calamari and say it's great, but puke at the thought of even trying a tiny piece fried squid. Or..the best example I can give to show my point: I called out my wife's name once( April) and my then 3 year old son says to me: "Dad! Her name is mom, not April!"
  15. "Just curious, is rescue the right word?????? I don't think so, they still had hot food for pete sake." I agree! I'd call it an extreme escort!
  16. Yeah, I read it. But I'd ask him before I delay any advancement. It may turn out he believes in "a god" just not "God" of the western persuasion. If you delayed him just for not believeing in our ( guessing we share the same one) God, then having a questionable character is ours to explain.....not his.
  17. "It doesn't matter if it happens at a scout event or not, and this is definitely an education problem." Oh, no doubt about it, it is a very horrific and serious problem. I was just saying that since it didn't happen at a scouting type event, then 5,000 policies by BSA couldn't have done any better than 3. Education aimed at and geared towards the youth will be way more effective than just simply mandating that adults take it. But I do agree all adults in any kind of leadership position should take it.
  18. "The scout just said he was an atheist. your gonna give him a pass to the next rank?????? " Nah, If your talking about the scout the OP mentioned... he said: "...this kid said absolutely and definitively that there was no God." This kid may believe in Allah, Shiva, Thor, Zeus, Quetzalcoatl,Rah , or who knows who else. Just as Western Christains do not recognize any other god but God..this kid may not recognize God due to his beliefe in his god. In that context, he could flat out deny that God exists, but still believe in a god, be completely respectful to, reverent to, and be 100% faithful to the diety of his belief. And not believing in God , but believing in another god ...means you are not an athiest.
  19. If only those fine people from Westboro were at Osama's funeral to protest it and chant their slogans of God hating him....
  20. Thing is, I don't think anybody could have enforced anything any more than they did. I'll even bet this guy had taken YP himself. Reading the link, it sounds like all incidents occurred away from any kind of scouting activity.(This message has been edited by scoutfish)
  21. WE just did something different as an incentive to hold a positiuon. By far, our hardest position to fill and maintain is treasuerer. Granted, noyt the same thing as a DL as you are asking about, but still just as important. At one of our leadership meeting s few months back, we decided that whoever takes the treasuerer positiuon, no longer pays dues for their boys. They no longer pay fees for PACK campouts either ( usually only in te $0.00 range anyways). Now, did that DL have an ADL or any p[articular parent who was more helpful or more active than the rest? Ask him/her about assuming the role. Tell them that no two DL's are alike and that he/she now has the freedonm to do a few things differently if he/she chooses. But of course, we know that this is the real world. Regardless of what the BSA books say, people are not climbing all over each oter trying to get to be the first one to help out! If the one you like takes the job, immediately find him an assitant. Then if the DL burnms out or cannot keep it up, the ADL can step up.
  22. two things: 1) Is the other dad on the EBOR Commitee? If not, his thoughts are irrelavent. 2) " I do not believe this kid to be Eagle material and do not even consider him a good scout." That is your answer right there. Use that answer and follow it. If the boy or his father ask you why, then tell them openly and honestly about the things that have brought you to feel why you do. The worst thing that could happen is that they do not like your answer .
  23. What if your boss does it? What if the company has a softball team that plays in a league?" What if our CC who is a Marine does it...does it become a military exercise? Does it fall under the guidlines of the United States Marine Corps? Is the government accountable if anything happens? If he invites a buddy over from work..does it become a mission? What ifs are endless. We could what if all day long, but this isn't a what if. If the pack or den does it...it's a pack or den activity. If I invite a few over and I do not tell them it is a pack or den activitty....then it is NOT a pack or den activity. When I go to RT's, I wear my uniform. Usually, due to when I get off work, and by the time I get home, get cleaned up and shower, I have to rush out the door to get to the RT on time. No time to eat. So after RT, I usually stop at a fast food place and grab something to eat. But this does not make it a RT activity or a BSDA sanctioned activity juist because I am in uniform. It does not mean BSA endorses the restaurant I went to, and BSA ius not liable if I spill my drink in my lap and get into a wreck. Neither is the CO the RT was held at , nor my CO because I just happen to be a CM through it. "But Scouts can have a party, too. If the den leader invites only Scouts, does that make it a Scouting event? How can you tell?" Yeah, they sure can have a party too. But that does not automatically mean any person who happens to be in scouting...is having a scout party. I also like to fish...as well as many of my packs leaders, parents and scout. That does not mean any invite I give is also a fishing invite. But that's not what the OP said: "But her point was that if the kid falls out of my tree or something, that the parent will see it as a Cub Scout event, and try to sue the CO. And if MY insurance knows it was a Cub Scout kid, they might see it as a Cub Scout event, and deny me coverage. But Cub Scouts would see it as a private event, and I'm screwed." Unless the OP said it was a scout event...then it is not! Yes, it's that simple.
  24. Speaking of applicationms...did any of you see where a youth signs te application? Nah, neither did I . I did see where the parents filled it out, signed it and handed over the cash or checks, but I ususally do not see boys having anytjing to do with it other than asking mom or dad to fill it out. Just saying... Don't try to bust a kid because of what it says on the application...his signature ( that isn't even there) wouldn't even be legal anyways since he is under 18 years old. BEsides, scouting isn't a place where all things are required to be in place when joining...otherwise....what is the point of teaching and mentoring.(This message has been edited by scoutfish)
