  1. I don't doubt you regarding a letter sent by Elks. I read this today, probably the award was already in process or maybe the National Elks are reconsidering? ATLANTA, GA - Not everyone in East Brunswick knows who Anthony Buccigrossi is, but dozens of local Eagle Scouts do. The East Brunswick Elks also know him. So do the veterans. Buccigrossi has been an active community member in East Brunswick for many years, helping lots of kids achieve in a venue - scouting - that is less about competition than it is about personal growth, public service, and Americanism. This month, he was recognized by the Elks at their 2022 National Convention in Atlanta when he received the Marvin Lewis Award for Scouting. Buccigrossi represented the entire Northeast region as one of only four recipients of the award. (Sorry, I have not found the other recipients.) 2. According to Marty Sepulveda, Scout Executive/CEO for the BSA South Texas Council, the BSA especially in Jim Wells County (population 38K) was greatly affected (by covid the last two years) so much that there are no cub scouts in the county. “We cover 17 counties including Jim Wells (and Duval Counties), (but) there’s no scouting in Alice again,” Sepulveda said. “We need to (re-establish) in Alice again.” (Alice, TX population 18K) https://www.alicetx.com/2022/07/15/bsa-affected-by-pandemic-look-forward-to-brighter-future/

  9. Update 7/13/2022 "The future of Deer Lake in Killingworth, Connecticut, is still unclear two months after a May deadline for bids for the property." - Connecticut Yankee Council (CYC) still in negotiation with two buyers - a developer (CYC Executive Board member) and a non-profit conservation group. - ongoing lawsuit "whether there is a public trust in a dedicated bird sanctuary at Deer Lake"...“They were looking into the propriety of the charitable organization selling the property to a board member, an insider,” he said. “There’s a public aspect to [a charitably deductible, tax-deductible organization] operation, and private benefit to an insider is something that the [state] Attorney General’s office enforces.” - "Connecticut AG office has an open investigation into the legality of the sale." 12. Walking the rocky Maine shores, I encountered some dead and dying sea gulls. Awful, steer clear. Local and federal health officials state the cause as avian influenza (bird flu), specifically, the highly pathogenic strain Eurasian H5N1. The virus is deadly and can spread quickly throughout a flock by means of body fluids, such as bird droppings, mucus or even contact with eggs. Symptoms of a bird that has been sickened by the virus include swollen heads, blue coloration of combs and wattles, lack of appetite, respiratory distress and diarrhea with a significant drop in egg production. These symptoms are particularly severe in chickens and turkeys. However, the highly transmittable H5N1 is not considered a danger to humans and should not raise alarm about poultry-to-human transmission of the virus. However...There has been concern of a spillover of the virus to predator mammals. Surprisingly, the first mammals detected with the virus were four dead seals (gray and harbor). The current rate of dead seal strandings is roughly three times as high as normal, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Other stranded seals were ill, with symptoms that included lethargy, sneezing and coughing. Some also had seizures — a symptom that has been reported in fox kits infected with avian influenza. https://www.bangordailynews.com/what-to-know-about-avian-flu-in-maine/ https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/06/science/bird-flu-seals.html

  14. July 1, 2022 Madison Square Boys & Girls Club, which operates six youth centers in New York City, told told U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane on Friday that it intends to use its Chapter 11 case to mediate more than a hundred sexual abuse claims involving a doctor who volunteered at the centers decades ago. "We're here to fairly and equitably compensate survivors of what they describe as hideous sexual abuse that took place many years ago at Madison's former premises," attorney Alan Kornberg said. Without bankruptcy protections, the 138-year-old youth organization would likely run out of money in 60 days and be forced to liquidate, Kornberg said. Nearly all of the abuse claims stem from the conduct of a single doctor, Reginald Archibald, who volunteered at Madison from the 1940s to the 1980s. Archibald, who died in 2007, also worked as a pediatric endocrinologist at Rockefeller University Hospital, which revealed Archibald’s history of sexual misconduct in a 2018 investigation. More at source: https://www.reuters.com/legal/litigation/new-york-youth-club-seeks-mediate-140-sex-abuse-claims-bankruptcy-2022-07-01/ May 22, and June 16, 2022 For decades, complaints of sex abuse by pastors and staff in the largest U.S. Protestant denomination, the Southern Baptist Convention, were either ignored or covered up by top clergy, according to an internal report released on Sunday. The nearly 300-page report details how complaints were kept as "closely guarded information" within the Convention to avoid liability, "to exclusion of all other considerations," it said. ... Southern Baptist Convention members voted on Wednesday to set up an independent task force to investigate allegations of sexual abuse by pastors and volunteers, including the response to accusations by the religious body's executive committee. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/southern-baptists-set-up-task-force-probe-sexual-abuse-claims-2021-06-16/
  15. Yes, we have our less loaded, nonsensical Language of Scouting. No doubt, we are working diligently to close the gap.
  16. So don’t use "Down Under" to refer to Australia or New Zealand, however, using "Across the Pond" to refer to the United States is not restricted.
  17. For your amusement July 5, 2022 Scouts in Britain have been told to stop referring to New Zealand and Australia as "Down Under" as part of a wide-ranging series of rulings, prompting howls of laughter on the West Coast this morning. Several British newspapers reported on the new Scout style guide, which now bans children from using the terms "falling on deaf ears", "man made" (Use artificial or synthetic instead.), and also "maiden name" and "Christian name". 18. William is the son of Steve Chamberlain and Sylvia Chamberlain, both special education educators. Together they created the Buddy Summer Camp Eagle project that started with a GoFundMe page to cover expenses for 11 children. The page fell short of its target but not of its goal. Fellow Boy Scouts and some of William’s friends joined the project to volunteer as a buddy, but when they didn’t have enough people they reached out to the Girl Scouts who, in line with their “do a good turn daily” motto, responded quickly and filled out the rest of the empty slots. ... Visual aids, sensory breaks, accommodating schedules are all useful resources but were no substitute for the benefits of experiencing friendship. ... Skeptics of the strategy of pairing young, inexperienced volunteers with autistic children were converted after realizing the potency of true affection on children rarely shown comprehension and friendship. ... “‘I feel like I failed,’ a volunteer said, because he couldn’t get him to do something,” Rocio said she overheard one day. “My heart went out to him, because I feel like that every day. But to hear somebody say that … they care.” Small steps, more details at source: https://myrgv.com/local-news/2022/07/03/small-miracles-one-boy-scouts-project-inspires-unexpected-transformation/
  19. I have no SCUBA experience, I just have worn thin wool hiker socks with neoprene booties (not fins). Anyway, did some research into dive socks: Dive socks (also called water socks or fin socks) are exactly what they sound like: Slip-on coverings for your feet made with lycra or neoprene. The main purpose of dive socks is to provide comfort and a snugger fit while wearing full-foot fins. Even with a well-fit fin, you can get excessive chafing and rubbing around your toes and ankles that can cause blisters. This is especially true if you wear fins for long periods of time. For hiking boots, that’s why a good pair of hiking socks (and maybe some Moleskin!) is essential. The same is true for fins! Maybe @mashmaster, @Bowline, @fred8033would be more help, no doubt there are other experienced members.
