  1. Porkroll you get a +1 for that alone. Now if you had said scrapple too you would be a JASM.
  2. Absolutely, we check them and follow the nutritional guidelines stated in their handbooks. Otherwise, what is the point in teaching nutrition and cooking if they are not meeting the expectations of the Scouting program . We have an ASM who approves menus and another who is available to assist in shopping within the patrol budget, less some Scout thought buying food at Whole Paycheck was a good idea.
  3. From that link: What to bring: Medical parts A &B, gloves, bug spray, water bottle, boots, long sleeve shirt We will be mucking houses that were flooded so they can begin the rebuilding process. Is Council providing respirator masks?
  4. Did you friend know Russell Means? I think he was a Scout there in that time period.
  5. Thanks I didn't finish that fragment about carbs and heart disease. Excess sugar, whatever the source, can lead to higher triglyceride levels and increased weight, both heart risks. As stated in the links, the slushes and candy are still there. You seem upset that healthier alternatives were made available giving the consumer more freedom of choice.
  6. Excess sugar At the trading post, the new approach meant changes to both product placement and product cost. Healthier options became more visible and less expensive. “These good-for-you foods were priced lower than candy, slushes and soda, which were still available for purchase,†Jeanne Arnold said. “They just weren’t the first thing you saw.†https://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2017/08/29/bsa-camps-adding-healthier-options-at-dining-halls-trading-posts/
  7. Those who attended that camp may feel differently. They should have been made aware their Council wants to close it and be given a chance to speak before a decision is made. Or...is it just another lost cause Mr. Paine?
  8. https://www.tapinto.net/towns/edison/articles/help-save-sabattis-adventure-camp-for-our-boy-sco-8 ...I ( CC Boy Scout Troop 77 in Westfield, NJ) awoke yesterday to rumors that the Patriots Path Council Executive Committee is voting in a week to close Sabattis Adventure Camp, which has been a source of learning and fun for Boy Scouts for 60 years, and sell the 1,250-acre property to developers in the Adirondacks. It is not clear why they are considering this move. Although many are aware this is happening, there is no official word from the council. There have been no public discussions, no consultations with those most closely affected by the council decisions: the troops, the packs, the Scouts and their families. It is odd that a Boy Scout Executive Committee should behave this way. It runs counter to everything we teach our scouts at every meeting. It runs counter to the Scout Law and the Scout Oath that our boys repeat at the start of every troop meeting, every troop activity and every sunrise at Sabattis. I have emailed all members of the Patriots Path Council staff, urging them against the closure of Sabattis Adventure Camp, and I have received the exact same canned reply from all but one who have responded, even with the same typo: The council president has called a special executive board meeting to discuss the future of Sabattis Adventure Camp. Until the board meets there is no change with the Sabattis Adventure Camp program. If they are any changes it will be announced on the council website during the week of September 18th. There is no mention of a Council President on the Patriots Path Council website. It certainly seems the result is already determined. I encourage all those with a stake in the future of the Boy Scout Program, whether your sons are currently Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Eagle Scouts or past Scouts, whether they have attended Sabattis, currently attend or currently volunteer at Sabattis to attend a protest scheduled to begin just before the Executive Committee meeting. The protest begins at 6 p.m. at the Patriots Path Council Office at 1 Saddle Road, Cedar Knolls, NJ, on Monday, Sept. 18. Sabattis Adventure Camp is located in Long Lake, NY
  9. What does your Scoutmaster advise? Merit badges aren't about easy, they are about personal growth through adult association - learn a skill, learn how to communicate and work with adults (other than your parents) Who knows there might be a local MBC who rode the famed Tour de Donut
  10. @@SFTX welcome to scouter.com . Lurk? My guess is you will have plenty to say.
  11. I doubt the troop was running any of the gambling activities. I suspect the troop organized the campgrounds and rally gathering points, sold firewood and maybe water and food, while other local organizations sponsored the gambling activities.
  12. IMO, as organizers decide not to continue annual events (parades, holiday events,...) for various reasons, this may be a fundraising opportunity for local units to step up.
  13. @@2000eagle22 welcome to scouter.com
  14. The Davis Motorcycle Rally has taken place in New Hampton,IA for many years, but organizers decided not to run it this year (dropping vendor revenue?). Local Boy Scout Troop 48, which had helped motorcycle campers at Mikkelson Park in past rallies, stepped up and organized the now renamed New Hampton Motorcycle Rally “There’s a little nervousness and a lot of excitement,†Boy Scout 48 Troop Scoutmaster Tony Trower said. “We’re ready, and we’re hoping to get a good crowd.†(Sep 8-10) And one thing hasn't changed, and that is this: The first motorcyclist enthusiasts arrived on Labor Day afternoon and set up camp. "I think just seeing that got me all charged up," Trower said. "We can't wait to see how this goes." Interesting fundraiser idea - reviving a local event.. http://www.nhtrib.com/news/boy-scouts-ready-host-motorcycle-rally
  15. The FB speculation came from 1. unlike previous years, there is no Team card listed for 2018 JTE scorecards. 2. Without LDS (who started/pushed the Varsity team program), there are few Varsity teams left. http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/Awards/JourneyToExcellence/scorecards/2018.aspx
  16. Ugh. Wish I still had my old (made in USA) Plumb Scout hatchet.
  17. According to this earlier article, he was working on Camping merit badge and this Introduction to Backpacking course was part of that? http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local/texas/article/Boy-scout-who-died-on-West-Texas-hiking-trip-was-11233898.php
  18. "The Boy Scouts of America are responsible for my son's death. It's that simple. " said his father John Comita, a former scout himself. Reading the article, the Comita's have, IMO, some strong arguments. "The backpacking course would have been Reid's final task to accomplish Eagle Scout. His troop has since awarded him the honor posthumously." http://www.wfaa.com/news/local/dallas-county/fort-worth-family-blames-boy-scouts-for-sons-hiking-death-in-lawsuit/471806992
  19. Scout Handbook 13th edition Chapter 3 Fitness - page 81 Healthful Eating and Nutrition (MyPlate) Chapter 10 Cooking - page 294 Menus (MyPlate again) First Class Requirement 2a. Help plan a menu for one of the above campouts that includes at least one breakfast, one lunch, and one dinner, and that requires cooking at least two of the meals. Tell how the menu includes the foods from MyPlate or the current USDA nutritional model and how it meets nutritional needs for the planned activity or campout. So if we are following the program, we are teaching scouts healthy food choices.
  20. I thought we taught smart choices using MyPlate guidelines. If they learn to eat candy for dinner at home, they will learn to eat vegetables for dinner at camp.
  21. If we have to have mess halls at summer camp then this is an improvement from the prevalent "fill 'em up with whatever they will eat" . No mention of food allergies or buy-in from troops whose trailers are often filled with snacks. Never was keen on the trading post selling sugar products. Fresh local produce instead of cans of salty processed food is welcome. Glad to hear ItsBrian's troop had a good experience with Carrots for Candy. My $0.02
