  1. L.L. Bean Inc. wants to test the combination of blockchain and Internet of Things technology to understand how people use its outdoor gear.

In a test due to begin this year, L.L. Bean plans to ship a line of coats and boots with sewn-in sensors that send data to the public Ethereum blockchain platform. The retailer is building a data tracking and analytics system to use customer data stored on Ethereum. Loomia, a Brooklyn-based technology company, plans to provide sheets of flexible circuitry to embed in the apparel, along with a small hardware device that uses near-field communication signals to collect data from the circuits while the customers wears the garments.

Chad Leeder, innovation specialist at the outdoors gear provider, says the information, likely to include temperature, frequency of wear and number of washes, could show whether customers use the products as intended and whether new products live up to supplier promises. Insights could be funneled into product development, marketing and supplier negotiations, he says.

Although L.L. Bean has collected customer comments for years, the data from this system would be more quantified, Mr. Leeder says. “Digital, quantifiable data about how customers are actually using a product — we’ve never had that data before.”

Blockchain technology is well-suited for the test because the ledger encrypts data and lets many sources make updates continuously, he says.

Again, I don't disagree one bit. But remember, many don't think that it's a done deal by the EBOR. Many think the EBOR is their last chance to pass judgement on the project and its suitability for credit toward Requirement #5. Others, myself among them, believe the requirements is completed when the Beneficiary and the Unit Lead sign off on the project plan's final report.

I would argue that it is not a simple issue of "reading the doc" as much as it is a case of adults reading the rules, knowing the process and abiding by them. Simply put: A Scout can read, understand and abide by the rules and processes 100%, but can still be torpedoed by one over-eager adult who does not. The process I recommend above is the insurance policy against that.

Many? Where's the training?  If there was one member who pulled that crap at a EBOR in our Council, our Advancement Chair would educate that person rather quickly about Eagle advancement policies and procedures.

  3. Ray Aldous joined in 1943 when he was just 11 years old after being pushed by his father who was a war veteran and scout member himself.

‘It keeps me as fit and as healthy,’ Mr Aldous, from Luton, said.

‘I still keep active and I am still pretty much involved with the town.

Mr Aldous was honoured by the Queen in 2015 with an MBE for services to Young People and Scouting.

(MBE is Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.  Scout salute  - RS)

He said: ‘When I was notified by Buckingham Palace and received the MBE for my services of the scout movement.

‘This was such an unexpected honour to be singled out for such world-wide publicity. I am immensely proud of my MBE.’

  4. Proper pancakes with chocolate spread or nutella? No wonder we revolted. :) We wanted freedom to cover our pancakes with maple syrup.

I  cannot recall a Fat Tues before Valentines Day so I have to get Mrs.Schiff her sweets today. Already bought her some GSUSA lemon cookies which the Girl Scouts kindly placed in a Happy Valentine's Day bag.

    :D

Those girl boys scouts will already be at World Jamboree as part of Venturing Crews.

Any girls who are newly registered in 2019 will have already missed the deadline to join the World Jamboree expeditions sent from the local councils. Applications for those expeditions are being accepted and processed now (in our council, at least).

Those deadlines could easily change. I predict a huge PR push ahead of Jambo. Again just my guess as to what is coming.

I don't disagree. But if they wanted to make a splash, why not use the venue of World Jamboree 2019 to announce a fully-baked decision instead of this botched rollout. The manipulative surveys, the deceptive information meetings, the predetermined outcome, and the lack of details (rest assured it will be amazing) ... I'm trying to think how BSA National could have actually done this *worse*.

Yes agree. IMO they wanted girl "Boy Scouts" at Jambo 2019 and to be there, those girls needed time to meet the same attendance prerequisites as boys.

I'm being realistic - not cynical here ...

In their rush to make an announcement about girls in Scouting, I don't think BSA National leadership had even begun the think through the myriad of issues such as these. Forget about half-baked - they haven't even put it in the oven yet. Why announce something as significant as new girls program when they can't even describe what it will look like? They are making this up as they go along. It is a move of desperation, and it is a reflection of their incompetence (in my opinion).

IMO the rush was/is the World Jamboree at Summit 2019.

  8. "ScoutFest (Scotland)– our festival for adults will take place at Scout Adventures Fordell Firs on 15-16 September 2018.

ScoutFest is going to be something very special for our adult members.  We’re planning a whole weekend of skills development opportunities, training, programme ideas, social events, camping, and loads more!

Scouts Scotland AGM (Annual General Meeting - similar to BSA May meeting - Annual Report, Board elections, major issues)

We will also be hosting our AGM at ScoutFest – our first AGM where all adult members in Scotland will have the opportunity to vote on any constitutional decisions and Board elections.

At our AGM  in November, the Scottish Council voted to extend its membership to all adult members of Scouts Scotland.

The Scottish Council is the overarching governance body representing members across Scotland.  It was previously a relatively small body made up of select roles and nominees from National, Regional, and District level. Decisions made by The Council affect all members, so it is crucial that it is truly reflective of our membership.

All 11,500 of our adult members will now have the opportunity to take part in consultations, decision-making, and elections. This means that our governance is now more accessible, transparent and democratic.

As part of the Scottish Council all adult members of Scouts Scotland will receive information about the AGM and elections.  We will do this by email, so please make sure that your email details are kept up to date on Compass so that you can receive this information."

  9. Disappointing that some have taken this discussion off the rails with exaggerated, explicit examples that have no place in a topic about Girl Scouts, let alone a scouter forum. Too bad, as this OP story is still developing.

If you don't want to follow the Scout Oath and Law in writing a post, your post will be removed.

    It is that simple.

    Topic is locked .

How can it stay a local option when it makes national news?  Leaving everything to local option can turn into a PR nightmare.

I am referring to the lack of an apparent National policy and this comment.

“This is kind of a community issue,” said Mike Lopes, a spokesman for the Girl Scouts of the USA. “For the most part, it’s not any different than selling in front of any other kind of shop. It just happens to be a marijuana dispensary.”

and that some California Councils have allowed it , Colorado went back and forth.
