  1. Staying home this year! Having a few friends over. I'll be lucky to make it to 11 pm.
  2. Does NOAC count? I went to Philmont this past summer.
  3. Fuzzy wrote "I have a personal preference against Purce's annual planning night but I am sure that it is a great event for him and his Troop, one that works. " Fuzzy buddy, just curious what personal preference you don't like? Here some more info that may turn you from the "dark side" At the annual "lock in" We give the SPL some guidlines. 1. Must have one outdoor or service event a month. We also give them the council calendar, a "where to go camping guide", and a few other aides. 2. We encourage the boys to attend dist and council events. 3. Keep the driving distance no more than 3 hours away. 4. No adults are allowed to speak. I think it took about an hour and the boys came up with a good plan. Best part they picked a Klondike Derby is hosted by another district. This is a great exercise for the "Boy lead concept". I think it works best for small troops like ours, but if you have a large one then use the PLC.
  4. I use the word "my" for several things. My God, country, job, kids, house, church, road, troop, lodge, district, and council. All the above are a part of my life, yet I don't own any of them. (I rent the house ) However the 2 year old that lives in my house uses the word "mine" for everything he touches... As Mataua said "I may not actually own it BUT I am claiming ownership." sums my sentiments to the me, mine, yours, his, hers, ours, and yours. Happy New Year, and may God make 2004 the best for you!
  5. Here's a plan that works. Every Dec the troop has annual planning confernence and Fun night. Fun night is a lock in where the boys and can eat pizza, drink coke, play video games, and watch movies all night. Boy must come up with the yearly plan before they can have fun. They are usally are done in an hour or so. And they do pick some good places to go.
  6. Cannons at Camp... Back when I was a youth, on Camp Staff at Camp RCM, we had a small cannon. A few of us from Scout Craft used the cannon to take over the nature lodge....
  7. Playing Golf Watching any Football, and college basketball. Playing softball Outdoors stuff.
  8. Nothing.... But non-Scouts side I got a bunch of civilian clothes...only 147 days til I become a civilian
  9. Scouts: Thorns - One unit will not recharter due to membership. Another Troop lost 8 boys due to military transfers yet it gained 14. One troop is on the ropes with it's adult leadership. Again this is due to military transfers. Roses - Went to Philmont. Saw all 12 Webelos from the base Pack, cross over to the base Troops. Got Commish of the year from the District. Personal Thorns - Work related stuff. Roses - Got engaged, went to Disney World.
  10. All, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May 2004 be better than 2003. Cary "I still have to wrap gifts" P
  11. Ask what the boys want to do. Troop I'm with normally does an in council one year and out of councel the next. Of course that changed this year. The boys voted to go out of council for 2004. I'm for the every other year routine, but my vote doesn't count.
  12. "20 years ago, I didn't think that you'd be able to buy homes wired for Gigabit Ethernet. " 20 years ago I didn't know what Gigabit Ethernet was....
  13. " If so many got the Eagle Badge without really earning it, do you honestly think the rank of Eagle would enjoy the level of respect shown to it in American society today?" Example of Eagle Respect. I proudly display my Eagle Certificate along with all my military plaques, certificates, etc in my office. People are always saying "Oh your an Eagle Scout? Wow! " Had a one person in the office about 6 months ago that congratulated me. I got my Eagle 22 years ago. I believe people will hold Eagle in high esteem 20 years from now.
  14. BW wrote "A unit program that doesn't sell popcorn, support FOS, attend council camp, get training, will weaken the entire program not just their unit." How can not selling popcorn and attending summer camp in council weaken the unit? I can see where a unit not selling popcorn might weaken the council due to a little loss of money. As for summer camp, should summer camps ban out of council troops from attending their camps? I know lots of camps that advertise for troops to come from out of council. Folks, any thoughts on the above?
  15. "It looks like beaver1onit may have just copied and pasted an email into his post. So, he may not have deliberately misled everyone into believing this happened to him. I bet the email or where ever it came from was written in first person" Sorry Beave, looks like you may have done the ole cut and paste! No harm no faul....
  16. "Having asked the question maybe I can answer it. Professionals need to startup new units as a feather in their caps. Very simple formula, start new units, do good work, get promotion and more pay. Very honorable on the part of the professional, hes just doing his job. Unfortunately the down side is this dilution of the volunteer resources and the weakening of existing units. " Very interesting....
  17. 1. Hat is a part of the uniform. 2. If flag ceremony is indoors no hat is worn. If outdoors, hat is worn.
  18. I wonder if we'll see the Beave around these parts any time soon?
  19. Happy Birthday DS! Guess you'll have to change your username to oldman Many happy returns, but most of all as my two year old says, "Happy Day!" Cary "Not 38 yet" P.
  20. NJ I'll keep your secrets. That Troop A/B thread became way out of hand and I stopped reading it after day two. To me each toop is unique. Good, Bad, or Ugly. On average I would say that a majority of the Troops serve the boys. Just because your went to another Council's Camp doesn't make your troop bad. Again these are just my opinions. Agree or Disagree, no harm, no foul. Here's the "stats" for the troop that I'm afiliated with. How many boys registered? 17 How many boys active? 9-10 How many Patrols? 2 Does your troop go to summer camp in or out of Council? Out Does your troop go to Dist/Council Camporees? Yes Does your troop support FOS? Yes Does your troop sell Popcorn? If not, what are your fundraisers? No. Sell tuperware, candybars, work for tips bagging groceries. Does your troop use NSP, FCFY method? Yes, Yes Does your troop have a Venture Patrol? No Does your troop have a feeder pack? Yes How does your troop recruit non-Cub Scouts? Had a Recruit a friend program. Scouts got 3 non-Webelos. Has your troop seen your Unit Commissioner in the past 6 months? Yes Is your Unit Commissioner helpful or a pain? Both Does your troop leaders attend Roundtable? yes How many members are on your troop committee? 4 Is your troop boy led? Yes, but sometimes the SM has to "keep things moving".
  21. Just curious to see the who, what, when, etc of Troops around the Country. I'm working on a project for Commissioner Service. Your Troop... How many boys registered? How many boys active? How many Patrols? Does your troop go to summer camp in or out of Council? Does your troop go to Dist/Council Camporees? Does your troop support FOS? Does your troop sell Popcorn? If not, what are your fundraisers? Does your troop use NSP, FCFY method? Does your troop have a Venture Patrol? Does your troop have a feeder pack? How does your troop recruit non-Cub Scouts? Has your troop seen your Unit Commissioner in the past 6 months? Is your Unit Commissioner helpful or a pain? Does your troop leaders attend Roundtable? How many members are on your troop committee? Is your troop boy led? Feel free to add questions, concerns, comments, complaints, or compliments to your post. YIS Cary "Trying to be a better Commish in 2004" P
  22. "Nah, duct tape is too expensive. The best wrapping is to stuff the gift into a brown paper grocery sack, crumple over the top and when you give it to your wife/girl friend say, "I'm sorry but I didn't have time to wrap it" and look really sad." Thanks FOG! This idea of yours is going to save me about 50 bucks on wrapping paper, ribbons, and most of all 4 hours of my time. Wrapping presents is one of the worst things in life! Last year I ended up going through one roll of paper per gift.
  23. Sorry but I'm not signing. I like both FOG and BW's posts. FOGGY is an equal opportunity buster of chops...he's gotten me a few times, but overall I like his opinions on some things. He call them like he see them. BW knows the ins and outs of the Scouting movement. He really knows his stuff. I've used Bob's advice on the board quite a few times. As for them not playing nice, heck I think we have all been guilty at one time or another. I say keep it as it...at least some times the stuff can be semi-entertaining...better than most stuff that's on tv now a days (These are the opinions of purcelce)
  24. Retire from AF. Get married. Spend two weeks at Camp on staff. Go to NOAC. Get a new Job. Do a better job as ADC. Go to Wood Badge. Do a better job on Troop Committee.
  25. Woke up this morning around 5:30 and got one of the best Xmas presents a service member can get. U.S. military got the Bad Guy!!!! Now may our troops get home a little faster. I just hope the knuckleheads, that keep ambushing my military brothers and sisters, get the picture and know that they are fighting a lost cause.
