Pad under sleeping bag? Yes

Here's my 2 cents... Should the kid be thrown out of Scouting? No. If we got rid of every Scout who made mistakes, there would be no Scouting. Many, many, many, many, moons ago, The Summer Camp staff had a party. Alcohol was invovled and so was 80% of the staff (including me). Camp and Program Director (Camp Director was SE), came down hard on each and everyone of us. Did we violate a major rule? Yes (several of them). Did we get thrown out of Camp and Scouts? No. Was I sorry? yes. Scouts actually kept me on the straight and narrow, even though I slipped a few times. Ponder this question. WWJD? YIS Cary P.

Bob, We have a population of 3000 or so on the base. I don't have exact figures on how many boys age 11 - 17. Base has an elementary School. Some elementary and all middle and high school students go to school in a town just outside the base. And in that town there is one Troop. In all the Troops in our Distirct I would say that 95 percent have at least one kid who has a parent in the military. nldscout sums up our situation best.

Hey BW! Long time no hear from To answer your question... One Troop has 17 on the books, the other has 7. Troop with 17 just got four new boys but one in Jan (Military transfer)will be leaving area, not to mention one will be aging out . Looks like there will be an influx of 7 -12 Webelos to this Troop. Troop with 7 will lose one in Dec to Military transfer, and one will be aging out in April. Looks like 3-6 Webelos will cross over. Early 2002 The Troop with 17 had 7, Troop with 7 had 9, and Troop that is not rechartering had 9.....

Joni4TA, the Unit did everything in it's power to recuit...Webelos visits, school visits, everything. I'm UC for this unit and I've been working with the SM since March...thing is we have two other troops on the base and all the new Scouts went to the other Troops. Dist big wigs have been notified, heck they've know of this situation for weeks.

I attended a Troop Committee meeting as UC/ADC last night. This troop will not recharter due to only having 2 Scouts in the troop. Troop loses three Scouts due to military transfers in Dec/Jan. SM attempted to get a group of Webelos II to take over that were thinking about starting a troop. But that idea fell through. Recruitment was bad for this Troop, as they only got one Webelos transfer this year. SM states he can't put on a good program for 2 Scouts. Before anybody goes off, the SM, ASM, and Committee members are trained. The troop has an outdoor program, they go to summer camp, have campouts once a month. This Troops even hooked up with another small troop a few miles down the road and did some campouts together. The Scouts that are staying behind will be transfering to other troops on base. My question is "What happens with the Troop's equipment and money?" The CO is a military unit and "doesn't own" the equipment or money. SM is going to call the DE today to get an answer, but I know the DE will be more interested in keeping the unit alive then helping with the equipment/money situation. If the DE has ideas that work then I'm all for it, but the reality is there are not enough boys on the base to support three troops. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appriciated.

Here are three simple (not easy) ways to get Webelos/New kids into your troops. 1. Great Program - The boys attend and stay if the program is fun, exciting, and never stale. Keep meetings intersting. Campout out at different locations. Heck, throw in an occasional "fun" merit badge class in the meetings (I'll get a lot a flack from some folks on this, but I've seen it work). 2. Advertise - Get the word out about your great program to the masses. Use the Scouts to recruit. Invite Webelos II dens to your meetings. Network with other Scouters in your area. 3. Get your adult leaders trained. (This message has been edited by purcelce)

At least I'm not as old as DS ....he'll be collecting social security real soon... For me, born 37 years ago The body of a 30 something Mind of a 20 somthing Act like a 10 something At work I'm known as the youngster, at the Scout troop I'm know as one of the Geezers. -
I say if the UW doesn't want to be associated with BSA then good riddance. The 5 percent can be made through firing a few worthless DEs (Gottacha DS ) Just kidding. The money can be made up....as stated in the thread....BSA is very resouceful. Last night I was helping my DE with some last minute FOS calls to those that gave last year and haven't been contacted this year. Brought in a nice chunk of change for 45 minutes of work. Cary P

Just want to take a minute to say thanks to all you guys who are doing SFF this month. We have bag drop off Saturday and pick up next weekend. I also have a Junior Girl Scout Troop helping the Boy Scouts, not to mention my Brownie daughter, and Daisy soon to be step-daughter in the mix also I know of quite a few food pantries that depend on the SFF drive in this area for the holiday season...... Again thanks Cary P Scouting for Food Coordinator for Scott AFB.

FOG wrote: "Anchors Away, " That would be "Anchors aweigh" pretty egregious mistake for someone who celebrates "Talk Like A Pirate Day." Jeez FOG, I know you like to bust BW's chops (and others) every now and then (Most are pretty amusing). But, please keep them off this thread. This is about Vets, not to see how you can get a quick zig in on BW

Veterans Day! This Vets day will always be special to me. Yesterday I made a big decision. I've decided to retire. So ole MSgt P soon becomes Mr. Cary. I will officially retire on 1 Aug 2004 with 20 years and 14 days. Best thing is that with my terminal leave and other "days" the military gives for house hunting, etc. I should be out the front gate mid May. So this time next year I'll be hanging out at the VFW complaining about the prices at the BX I did mess with the future Shewhomustbeobeyed. Told her I had a job just as soon as I get out.... Camp Staff. Oh what a whirlwind two months this has been.... getting engaged and now get to find a new career. I kind of have the same feelings that I did when I was 17 years old and signed up for the AF. Excitement, and a little fear of the unknown. Ok that's enough of my 5-second cheap plug. I would like to wish all those who have served, serving, and those who support the Vets a happy Veterans' Day. Also don't forget those who are left behind taking care of the home front while their husband/wife/mom/dad/son/daughter/friend is in some far away land. If you get a chance today, hug a vet Cheers MSgt Cary E. Purcell, USAF (This message has been edited by purcelce)(This message has been edited by purcelce)

Just had an "extra mile" experience. I'm in charge of coordinating the Scouting For Food Drive on base. To make a long story short, I have to go through 7 layers of military red tape to get the official approval for our troops and pack to place bags on base residents doors. One of the requirements is to place a flyer in each bag explaining that this function has the blessing of the Base Commander, and the food will be going to the Company Grade Officers' Club for their Xmas Basket program. We have over 1600 bags to pass out, and that adds up to quite a few flyers. I asked my DE at RT if the Council could help out with making the copies, he sayed he would check into it. Yesterday afternoon before I left work I got word that the flyers are ready to be picked up. I don't think council had to help me out with this because last year I paid for the printing out of my pocket. To me that was an "extra mile". YIS Cary P

Try this link http://www.cap.gov/ it's CAP's website. As DS stated CAP is the Auxillary of the USAF. I worked with a CAP squadron 5 years ago when I was a recruiter. It's a worthwhile program for youth and adults.

I have a few but the most recent one.... This past summer at Philmont. It was our last night on the trail. Everybody was in their tents...I had to go find a rock...I looked up and sawmillions of stars....I shouted "Wow!!!" Next thing you know the entire crew was out there in their skivvies looking up at the starts...We were able to find a whole bunch of constelations. Last time I saw a sky like that was when I took Astronomy MB back in '78/'79 at Summer Camp.

First Aid (circa 1977). It was a two day class put on by our Unit Commisioner, Art Shaumberg. Had about 5 boys in the class from two troops. I almost didn't get the mb due to "failing" the final exam. Art gave me some extra tutoring and I passed. I believe it was the hardest MB I took.
