  1. Does anyone know what the documented procedure is for creating a new District???? Could you please guide me to the proper references. We are in the middle of merging two districts and one of the districts Chair and Vice chair have declared themselves as the head of the new district. There is a bunch of ugliness going on and the New District Exec is not being any help at all, as a matter of fact my phone calls are not being returned. Council just keeps referring me to the DE. There is a lot of closed meetings with the self proclaimed leaders and their minions. They have move th
  2. Here is the link that the age appropriate guide lines. http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/ageguides.pdf
  3. I am a bit confused about nationals policy. I thought that I read that the weeblos are no longer allowed to spend the night at camporees or campouts with the Boy Scouts. Can anyone provide a link to the information. I am looking toward the fall when our pack gets together having a better idea of the do's and don'ts.
  4. I forgot about carter cave. An outstanding place.
  5. Keep in mind it is not a scout camp. There is a lot of drinking, and heck raising goes on down there during the weekends. When hunting season is on there is way too many guys in the woods and I have had stray rounds zip past me on more than one occasion. Did I mention the idiots in rail buggys, jeeps, mud running pickups and atv's running the roads. Like all strip pits there isn't much in the way to look at, the soil is sandy and muddy as noted and not much. Don't forget everyone needs a permit to be on the property, most of the local carryouts have them. With that said there is a
  6. An you guys complain about how much summer camp costs now. Throw in 10 jet skis and 10 atv's. Your talking 100k plus maintenance and fuel. We can't keep our cabins in decent shape. No way.
  7. They are worried about the quality unit patch. The patch is absolutely meaningless to cub age boys and maybe slightly more meaning for for scout or venturer. Doubt me? walk up to any scout at a district or council and ask what the patch means and what it is for. Most will not know. Ask them about the world conservation award too, a few with know the panda patch, or council strip.
  8. Tour permits are a confusing thing. Everyone has an opinion as to what is correct. the big thing to remember is that it HELP protect YOU ,the leadership of the pack. My personal rule of thumb is if we leave the CO I file for a permit. It just takes a couple of minutes and your covered.
  9. It is real easy to monday morning quarterback. This could have been his home trail and he was very familiar with the area and he merely under estimated his injury. He made a bad choice by leaving the trail, now he can pay for the choice.
  10. I wear an eagle scout bolo or a bolo that I received for enhanced basic leader training.
  11. I would leave the pack numbers off. He needs to be their cub master.
  12. I would wear the Cub Master Patch. That is who you need to be for the boys. They don't care about anything else.
  13. Part of trek safely suggests that you need to know when you don't know. There is no shame in it, lets face it I am kinda rusty on brain surgery, so I leave it too the experts. A lot of scout masters are to full of ego to admit they don't know and boys, adults and leader often have to pay the price.
  14. Ah shucks, boys will be boys, let it slide. You have got to be kidding me. Duct tape over the mouth and binding him. Then making him drink urine. Sorry, that crosses the line by a mile. Please read both accounts...... One is confusing the other clears it up. Not even close to hazing. As a young man it never even dawned on me to do something like that. What about the 21 year old? I have always believed that adult leaders need to be over 25 years old. This give them some separation from themselves and those they lead and train. Can anyone find out i
  15. Going to Philmont and not liking hiking???????????? What in the world????? So why would you subject yourself to it? And waste your or your parents money. Just getting thru it isn't the attitude to have especially when your lucky enough to go. Oh and sneaking along the trail with your face into the wind is a real good way to get into trouble.
  16. The two packs have probably 1/3 to 1/2 of the Cubs in our district in them. We have families driving 1/2 hour past other packs to belong to that group. Popcorn sales in the neighborhood of $35,000 each. The are killing our district. they don't participate in day camp, district campouts, round table or anything they do not directly organize. Completely self sufficient and independent. It was brought up to the DE and he changed the subject. Again I do not condone the activity, just reporting it. As a matter of fact they even have pictures posted on their website.
  17. Where I live, Sexting went from a Felony, kiddy porn thing, to a misdemeanor for those under 18 crowd. There was a local girl that committed suicide over her pictures being circulated around school. In the more affluent areas around town it is a big joke. kids will be kids and It is a safer version of "if I show you mine". I do not condone the activity. Read this, Interesting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexting
  18. My parents believe I should have paper. It is against the troops policy. Also, isn't paper at tool. Someone had to say it. One passing thought, If a young scout has pictures of his nekid GF on his phone and you confiscate it, you are now in possession of child porn and against the law. Sexting is ok for the under 18 crowd but a big no no for the over 18 crowd to have pictures of the under 18 crowd in their possession. Kiddy porn is universally frowned upon and will get you ejected from scouting and sent to jail. What if the young man informs LE to your "problem" while
  19. pfffffftttt, Only at council ranges. We have several packs in our district own their own bb guns and archery equipment. They run them at their own pack outings not at council owned ranges. and with full knowledge of the DE.
  20. I had my physical Friday. The MD and his Resident shook their heads. The resident was an athlete and judging by looks was very fit, said he did not meet his weight and height. The good news, other than being fat is I am healthy as a horse. The Doc asked what I would like him to do about the check box on the top that says something about meeting the chart figures. I laughed and told him to check the on I fit. I understand the need for a chart, but please, I am just going to resident camp with the boys not Philmont or high adventure.
  21. Far as to what I said and meant earlier in the thread. Not displaying much in the was of scouting spirit. A lot of Me, I and friends. It isn't about the other dens it is about your den. The CM asked you to take two more boys. At a table of 8, two more is nothing. And you have an assistant at that??????????????????????? Wallet????????? Ever heard of Dues. If your spending that much out of pocket increase your dues to cover it or have parents pay for outings or what ever is eating up the most cash. Is it snacks???? Snack Bucket is the instant fix. Everyone takes a turn f
  22. Now there is a big steaming cup of scout spirit. I don't really have anything positive to add other than shaking my head in disbelief.
  23. So why do you guys take it so personal? At lot of we's and I's in this discussion. Why are you panicking over a young man who blows 7 1/2 years to get to Eagle? It is sad grant you, but I will not get upset over it. From my brief experiences in such situations it is just one of many opportunity's lost by these procrastinators. Get over it and let them fail, it was their choice.
  24. Tom, just pull the boy out of the troop and find one that allows electronics. No reason to bust the chops of an established program and SM. You need to get over calling a cell phone a tool. It is not a tool it is a telephone. You communicate with other people. IT IS YOUR OPINION the policy is not working. BTW what is your position in the troop, Oh that's right you don't hold a position. I would butt the heck out.
  25. His friends will teach him to text, IM, use cell phones, my space, face book, and what ever else is coming. One hour a week, one weekend a month and one week in the summer isn't all that much to ask to be unplugged from the network. I find it refreshing. No pager or cell harassment. We have parents who are frantic when there is no cell coverage at camp. Ashamed they don't pay that much attention to their boys.
