  1. Get over it or Find another troop We don't go as far as saying none period. But they must be turned off. No ipods, video games periods. Your arguments are weak and show a lack of maturity. What if's, we could talk about them all day. The scenarios you mentioned, his scout training should help out.
  2. LAZY The example sited is using a single creek clean up for three different awards. What kind of example are you setting? At work can you complete one project and count if for 3 jobs, nope. At school can they do it with their homework or assignments, nope. An observation, If you have to plan specifically and then double count events to complete requirements your program is weak. Get off your Butt and fix the program. It is about lessons and spending time with the boys. I enjoy seeing the boys with shirts full of awards but they need to be earned.
  3. Far as internal pork temp for completely cooked? Your safe at 165, but that isn't tender juicy BBQ. I cook my pork shoulders till the bone pulls easily, I think it is about 190-200 depending on the ambient temperature, fat content and age of the pig. I like a nice mop of cider vinegar, franks, crushed red pepper and some brown sugar. Now you done it, gonna have to smoke some this weekend. Sitting here salivating.
  4. Well Penn, I hope your right. But I did as I was told at work. They wanted us to be prepared for a stay offor multiple days on site. I wouldn't think they would just do that to get us all worked up.
  5. I have also ran into the Respect my beads attitude. Wood badge snobbery as I call it. Women wood badgers have it tough, for the most part they do not have had the youth scouting experience to draw from. If that is an excuse. I have met some great scouters, male and female, who have attended wood badge, but I suspect wood badge had nothing to do with it. The less than scouting scouter tendency gets amplified, Look at my new bobble I am superior to you and you must listen and obey me. Well the last apart is an exaggeration, but you get my point. I will attend wood badge at some
  6. killed a hundred and fifty or so in mexico. one in texas. How many before it is real and a danger? Now mexico's health care may not be to as high a level as the United States. It is real and the world health organization is concerned. Our hospital has had meetings about it, discussing staffing issues and departmental what ifs? I have a bag of cloths, sleeping bag, personal needs items at work. If it shows up at our hospital in a wide spread manner (out side the isolation rooms) I will not be taking it home to my kids and wife, planning to say there for possibly the
  7. You guys need to at least educate yourself before you speak. You cannot get swine flu from eating pork. The problem with raising then slaughtering a pig on site, beyond the entire occult thing, is most of the scouts are city kids. Without them seeing the actual killing and cleaning, you might as well just go to the local butcher and buy a hog for your pig roast. Have you actually roasted a pig? Do you understand the amount of effort involved?
  8. My experience was the trainers can be over zealous. No bright colored gear, hushed voices. My tent is bright orange, sorry. My pack is bright red. My shorts are Hawaiian. I fully support the principle and practice it to the best of my ability. The no back country campfire is tough. Part of camping for me. The rest of it is just common sense to me.
  9. A couple of years ago there was a young man that cut his own arm off when it got pinned between two boulders. I think he regrets his solo back country adventure.
  10. I guess it depends on your cooking set up as to what is easiest. One of my favorites is Chicken fajitas for the adults. We can easily cook for 30 adults while the munchkins eat fire roasted hot dogs.
  11. A formal request for resignation is in order from the Pack Committee. Then a public he left for personal reasons and then let it be. You will probably lose the entire family.
  12. There is no generic formula. A lot depends on weather and the level of activity on the camp out. Summer the boys don't eat as much as winter. Lets face it, they are hot and tired they will not eat as much. It is better to have a few left overs at meals than hungry boys and parents. You can always split up the left overs to take home. You can never have too much sausage or bacon, I figure 3 per person, with that said they will continue to eat it till it is gone, same for hot dogs and hamburgers, I figure two per person execpt tigers and smaller sibs. Generally the boys wil
  13. Don't forget a lot of the consumables get donated, Pens, paper and such.......I understand that a lot of the food gets donated around here any ways.
  14. Currently we have a monthly hike, and something else. This month was crowded we ended up with 6 events. It happens, But as you said, there is a core group that attends them all, a few more attend some of their choosing and a few chose none. Today we have our earth day project with a local park, yesterday we had a council earth day day camp, Last weekend we had our hiking program, the previous weekend we hiked, Next weekend there is a camp out and the following weekend is another Civic park clean up. The last 6 weeks or so has been very busy. The way I see it, We need to offer a
  15. Well, a bit more information, The dens have never schedule anything on their own.
  16. So how many pack activities do you plan a month, beyond the den meetings that is? We plan 2 or 3 a month, Very rarely is there any cost involved other than a sack lunch and all are optional. I have the CC complaining that all this is costing too much and alienating part of the pack???? There is no cost involved so I don't understand, He is claiming some parents are complaining to him, I am not sure he is being entirely truthful or bending the facts to suit his needs. Anyone have any experience with this.
  17. Seems rude and out of line. I would simply not schedule FOS presentation next year and tell them why. We had a DE ask a parent why his donation was so small, The parent took the card back, shredded it, grabbed his son, wife and that was the last we saw of him. Scouting is too much about the money, drives me crazy. The perpetual fun raising.
  18. Wow, a lot of "I's" and "Me's" in a couple of the previous posts. Enough said. A year since my previous post. I have a much better answer, I see Leaders with pressed immaculate highly decorated uniforms at camp outings and others with not patch one on them at award banquets. The Leader I respect is the one in a worn out uniform. The pants with the worn knees, the rumpled well loved worn uniform shirt. It tells me that it is worn alot, the worn knees shows active participation. In my book that is more of an award than any knot or bobble. I will go as far to say those
  19. Go with your son, as many have stated before the hours spent with your young man are worth more than money. I have an 8 year old and he is fantastic, I wouldn't change anything, other than spend more time with him. He is finding his sense of humor, starting to tell jokes that are even funny. Doing the right thing even when he thinks I am not watching, Makes me smile. Spend the time with your son, woodbadge will always be there.
  20. Require the parent to accompany. Her son puts an unfair burden on the rest of the adults attending. I would never ask parents to rotate shifts to watch the boy sleep. The needs of the one out way the needs of the many. as spock would say. Nope.
  21. So what are you guys doing for your websites? I changed packs and have been working with the group on a getting an on line presence. What I did with the old Pack was Ok, Just seeing if there is something better out there. Any suggestions on free or is $50 bucks unlimited the best thing going???????
  22. I agree with Dean 100%. I would never let an adult just come along with the Pack, Too many questions. Become a leader then come along, I wouldn't even mind paying the 10 bucks for them.
  23. Our Council has a number of single day events held at the camps. I would not call them a day camp. We also have something called blazer days sponsored buy US sportsman Society. Not really a day camp. I think your reaching but that is just me. BTW, why do adults believe the cubs need to earn all the awards in the first year anyhow????? Just curious
  24. I doubt the tigers have earned the award most did not join until the fall round up and there are no cub scout day camps held during the school year to my knowledge. A day camp is typically put on by a district or council lasting from 3-5 consecutive days. Some large packs in our District have put on their own day camps. ******** All Ranks Attend Cub Scout day camp or Cub Scout/Webelos Scout resident camp. ******** Jay please ensure they have actually earned the award. It cheapens the award for the boys who have actually earned it.
