"Made tangles from a leather thong." Whether it be leather or silk, I hate it when my thong gets tangled.

Outdoor Article Restart - Is BSA Training Sufficient?
local1400 replied to BrentAllen's topic in Camping & High Adventure
If I had all the training Le Voyageur listed, I wouldn't waste my time as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts. What's the matter with you guys? This is not Special Forces. It's only an hour a week. -

Ok foto, how much are you willing to pay for more training? Should every Scout leader be as qualified as a Registered Maine Guide? Everyone has different levels of skills, and interests for that matter. Great at Botany but shaky on firebuilding? Fine. Stick to what you know. Teach what you know. But I rarely say anything. It is up to the BOYS who are knowledgeable to teach the other BOYS. BOY-LED, BOY-RUN for the BOYS by the BOYS. -
Outdoor Article Restart - Is BSA Training Sufficient?

I will now answer the question "Is BSA Training Sufficient?" YES. I have survived the last 20 years all on training I received as a Boy Scout, and that is why I volunteer today. -
Unique Cooking Methods? How to Cook in a Cream Can?
local1400 replied to ynotcamp's topic in Open Discussion - Program
4JAM, a pie iron is a square "box", hinged, and usually with two handles that lift the top when opened and when squeezed together will hold the "box" shut. Like tongs. Someone else above mentioned they are about 4" X 4" square, and maybe 1 and a half to 2 inches deep. You can do lots with them, breakfast sandwiches, pizza, desserts, anything and be creative! Good luck and welcome to the forums. Come back soon so we can get to know ya! -
Yep, still getting it even at 0227 on a Monday morn.

What Does Boy Run / Boy Led REALLY Mean?
local1400 replied to PeteM's topic in Open Discussion - Program
The troop needs a Patrol leaders Council meeting monthly. The well meaning adult volunteers need to understand how the BSA runs. If you need to, get all the literature available and show them. No wonder so many kids never get to or drop out at the Boy Scout level.Who wants 6 more years of crafts and puppet shows? -
Fred wrote "As far as I know, we don't have separate schools for Polish kids, or Sudanese kids, or Honduran kids, they all go to the same schools and we teach them english." Well Fred, (and I am not picking on you here, but the "system") yes, these kids from non-english speaking countries do attend our public schools, but learning english is not something they do. School districts need to hire, at taxpayers expense, dozens of interpreters to communicate with these kids so they don't have to endure the humiliation of learning the language of the country they live in. Many of these kids are US citizens too, on account of Mom illegally entering the US whilst with child, whelping here, and enjoying the benefits of one of the biggest and dumbest loopholes in the immigration system. The Portland, ME school dept. once boasted 'they speak 62 languages in the school system'. In America? Hey, we were all immigrants, and we should actually be speaking in a Native tongue, but our ancestors came here and actually learned the language spoken here so they could fit in and become productive members of society. Sorry to hijack this thread, but I do get tired of using fingers to order a coffee or quick meal on the run.

Yes, I am getting it too. It is annoying to have to keep closing it so I can navigate through the forum. The sad thing is I do trust this website. Moderators?

National Jamborees - Are they worth the effort?
local1400 replied to Eamonn's topic in Open Discussion - Program
E, what do you know about a N.E. National High Adventure Base? National dumped Maine H.A. in the 80's and it is now operated by the Katahdin Area Council. Where would they propose another one? As for the thread, I have never been to, but always wanted to, attend a National Jamboree. Maybe someday. I often see on e-bay memorabilia from different Jambos of the past held at different locations around the country, and I think that would be great. This is a big country, and I could imagine a tent city of 50,000 or more popping up for 10 days or whatever in the hills of New Mexico or the fields of Iowa, or even the forests of Oregon or Maine. Get around, see something new, have fun. -
Gonzo, time to move. Being from Chicago, you probably can't even find a decent pizza (by Chicago standards anyway). The G.O.B.s will never relinquish control over the boys. The PLC has to make a stand to the leaders about how the organization is supposed to run. This troop may live or die, but why do they want to continually shortchange the boys? Maybe the best hope for this unit is for the SMs boys to age out or whatnot and salvage the program after the GOBs have moved on. PM coming.

Well now, if those chihuahuas are service dogs, such as seeing eye or hearing ear, then you got a whole new problem with the ACLU.(winky)

Full uniform, long or short sleeve depending on season, switchbacks, neckerchief, socks, brown leather footwear (boots or jungle mocs, again, depending on season), red nylon BSA jacket, and a BSA hat to cover my ever-increasing bald spot. Never any unauthorized patches. My patches are also sewn on to the exact measurements in the Uniform Guide. It is actually pretty spartan, Flag, Quality Unit bar, CSP, numerals, Lodge Flap, green ASM patch, service stars, and name tag.

um, did I hear $50,000 from the back of the room?
-
No. I have shoelace-less footwear.
-
$100,000.00 anyone?
-
I still have a Snoopy/BSA pin from the 80's that has Woodstock wearing a campaign hat and has a gold FDL attached. Offers start at a quarter-million. (smiley face here with tongue sticking out).

Remember one thing CrossRam, OA is not an award, it is an honor. It is a commitment that needs to be fulfilled throughout the year. It is a fraternal service group within the BSA. Once the young one earns his sash and flap he needs to work to keep them.

Help! My Troop Has Fallen and It Won't Get Up!
local1400 replied to elizdaddio's topic in Open Discussion - Program
But what do the boys want? Perhaps in the past some Scouts didn't want to camp so the leaders didn't want to waste their time planning events. But the PLC should be doing the planning. Good luck elizd. -
bpacker- Who is losing interest the kids or the parents? BSA is not here to entertain parents (or kids either). Could you expand on your situation? There are many helpful people here who can offer up the best ideas. Welcome to the forums and please come back and let it flow.
