  1. I think Ed and Merlyn are the same person with multiple personality disorder. And they/he don't/does'nt have another hobby.

pssst, hey buddy, wanna buy some red loops? Underground has them at $25 a pair, but I'll sacrafice them to you for just $15.
  3. You could set up a camp scholarship type program for underprivileged Scouts who otherwise couldn't afford a week at Scout camp.
  4. Seems to me when I was a Cub in 79 or so the Cub uniform had the flag over the right pocket so den number and Webelos colors were the only items on right shoulder. Which way was that taking us? I will admit, I am an undercover U.P. enforcer. Get on the ground Gern.
  5. You can check with your local animal shelter. I have seen kids there cleaning litter boxes, stalls, and whatnot. Don't forget to bring some food for a donation or a $5.00 bill will work well too.
  6. I don't much care for venison. Moose on the other hand, is very delicious.
  7. Have had a few frosts, and they are starting to make snow up on the slopes. Some snow up on Mt. Washington where 20 seconds ago the wind chill temp was 16.4 F. No one out on the Observation deck according to the webcam!
  8. I don't think sewing as a MB would stand on it's own but I do like mschwartz's idea of "Family Consumer Skills". You could add ironing, money budgeting/checkbook/bills stuff and integrate Personal Management MB in to the new one. I have always loved the ladies so in HS I took Home Ec to be near them. I have always sewn on my own patches until recently because Mrs. 1400 really wanted to for me so I naturally let her. But my trick is to make a loop out of masking tape to hold them in place, sew halfway around the patch, then remove the tape and close her up. I have badge magiced some patches to
  9. LH, on the left of the home screen, click on "Research Reports" and on the next page you will find "Summer Camp Outcomes Study."
  10. Some of us Scouters NEED all the support we can get to hold up our pants-hence the "2 deep belt system"! Seriously, my understanding is you can remove the black web belt and use your favorite BSA green belt or a treasured leather one.
  11. You know, on the BSA National website there is a study about Summer Camps and how good they are for the youth, all the POSITIVES of a summer camp experience. And they want to deny the CAC youths of that? JS and LH---I thought you guys were fighting for the same team. BTW-that "study" is 26 PDF pages long. Print it off quick before it disappears.
  12. If your Scout camp has a dining hall, did you ever notice that when the DH Steward puts the sign up for food, hungry boys put the sign up and stay quiet? It should be the same whenever the sign goes up, adults too.
  13. milwscout580, I worked four summers at my council camp in the late 80s. We were "off duty" for a 24 hour period each weekend. I remember only eating, laundry, and sleeping for that period. When at camp, we were up at 6 am and often not asleep until almost midnight. Kitchen crews got about 4 or 5 hours per night. No joke, just lots of hard work to make the program run.
  14. If you've ever worked at a Scout camp, you know the answer is 4.
  15. I have seen purple loops worn by members of Madockawanda Lodge 271 (Pine Tree Council, Maine). Purple is the official lodge color.
  16. There is a website called usscouts.org (sorry no link-my computer skills are still limited) which has a database of Scout camps in the U.S. You can read and post comments on just about every Scout camp. Of course, there are difference of opinions like in everything else in life, so I wouldn't make up my mind based on someone else's experience. Go, see, have fun, and if you don't like it, try Wyoming next time. You can also check out the councils website for usually very helpful rules and other information and some websites also have photos and even camp promo videos to watch. But I personally
  17. I will respond by saying I have only been involved with smaller troops (about 35 being the largest). Every troop I have served with has a Troop QM because the troop owned the equipment, not the individual patrols. The boys have never said "how 'bout Patrol Bugler, QM, Scribe, or Historian etc...". If the boys don't think it up, we don't force it down their throats. I will also say 90% of the boys are under 13 so finding maturity and responsibility enough to be a PL is hard enough without giving some Scout a POR that , what, serves only as a token position so we can check off his requirements?
  18. The Official BSA Insignia guide (item no.33066) costs about $5.00 and is a worthwhile investment for any unit. On page six in the special regulations section it says this about shoulder loops: "Colored shoulder loops identify the area of Scouting: blue, Cub Scouting; red, Boy Scouting; blaze, Varsity Scouting; green, Venturing; silver, council and district; gold, national and regional. Wear the color for the primary registered position in which you are functioning." Color is printed in the book in singular form so your good friend is not setting a good example by wearing multiple shoulder loop
  19. No. Patrol Scribe and QM "positions" are phantom POR and really serve no purpose.

No more shoulder loops?? I am going to clean out the Scout shop supply first thing in the morning and horde them all for later e-bay sales!
  21. Gern, I have a 2007 model Chrysler that smells like Onions, would you like to trade? On the topic, the troop of my youth still had some old floorless canvass wall tents. Talk about heavy. Never backpacked with them of course, but they did hold up well. I think they are still available and would be a good lesson for Scouts to use when car camping. They can buy their own backpacking tents for that activity. Fox, what facilities are available for your unit? My old troop had an old firehouse for a meeting place and we hung tents in the basement (horse stalls) on Sunday after trips and put away aft
  22. My deepest condolences Eamonn.
  23. GA HillBilly (I don''t have a pretty mouth!). You obviously understand the Boy-led concept and it''s up to you to bring that to your troop. Good luck, and thank you for your volunteerism.
  24. Welcome Dad. I was impressed you mentioned Max Silber. He is very much missed here in New Hampshire. To todays Scouts, that name is just the name of the Library at the Lawrence Lee Scout Museum. But to another generation, he is simply Uncle Max, a kind and funny old man who gave and gave (time, financial support, and belt buckles) without ever asking anything in return except to honor the Scout Oath and Law.
  25. Hi Slouch, as a Scout in the 80''s we never had a parent go with us but today many Mommies and Daddies tag along. This does interfere with the Scout method as at home the kids need to ask Ma and Pa permission for whatnot and while at camp they still think they need to INSTEAD of asking the PL or SPL. So sometimes it is not the parents fault but they are unable to tell Junior who he has to see because although you can tell the parents the Boy-led method, they are unable to comprehend it. It does get frustrating at times. On the other foot, it is usually the Scouts with severe emotional disabili
