  1. Ed, how about actually "dialing" a rotary phone? I actually used a rotary payphone in Maine as late as 1998!
  2. Brent, instead of German they should teach Yankee. I wish I had learned Southern before I moved to NC in 98. I had no idea that "youns" was a variation of "ya'll". Heres your lesson for today: I don't park my car, I paahk my caah.
  3. ElyriaLeader- Are you one of those four men from Ohio who were abducted in the late 70's while canoeing in the Allagash, not far from LAFB?
  4. GW-do you have the recipe for Moose Turd Pie and do you use dutch, reflector, or what say you?
  5. Go through the Scout law. Trustworthy--did the Scout give his word he was going?
  6. The highest wind speed ever recorded (231 mph) was on top of Mount Washington, NH. Home of the New Hampshire Primary.
  7. packsaddle-if those black sedans pull up, and we never hear from you again, so long my friend!
  8. I don't like germs, I'm not a hypochondriac. Besides, medical facilities are some of the filthiest places around.
  9. E. I am a self proclaimed "Germ-a-phobe". I was an assistant cook for two summers at my councils camp. Every year, OSHA, the State Healh Inspector, and BSA Regional Inspectors visited our camp. Is that not how it goes in PA? Every one had the authority to close the camp if it deemed necessary, so cleanliness and proper procedure was vital. Kitchen crew worked 6 am until midnight or 1 am, and dinner was over by 7 pm, so we cleaned and sanitized every night. We did not go to bed until it was done right and inspected by the camp director.
  10. Calico Penn is a former MHA staffer. He could provide some info. You could try Cyr Bus company (Bangor and Old Town) for charter service. Katahdin Area Council's Camp Roosevelt is only 30 minutes from Bangor (albeit East of, and away from, MHA).
  11. I am looking at my BSA Insignia Guide Brian, and on page 47 it lists the Honor Medal, Heroism Award, and the Medal of Merit. All three just say "awarded to a member of the Boy Scouts of America for...". So I guess it means adults too although it isn't clearly defined. But as a Leader or Committee person, ye are registered, are ye?
  12. The temperature on Mars ranges from 1F to -175F according to the space probes who landed there. That is some extreme winter camping!! What would the MSF say about camping in those temps? I don't see how we will ever colonize that planet. But to the thread, those Aliens who crashed at Roswell surely didn't practice LNT.
  13. Congratulations Merlyn. I am a very tolerant, open-minded person. But I have run out of patience with your anti-BSA diatribe (ever notice diatribe and diarrhea are very similar?). You have become my first "ignore this user" poster. Go sell your B.S. elsewhere, we're all stocked up here.
  14. Well said Lisabob! I would also add Scouter30's original post was almost a month ago and like John (in the KC!) said, hasn't returned to update/fill in the blanks for us. And ya know Truth2, we all have opinions(and you know what they are like?).
  15. But how many times has the media been invited to a Scouting event that they didn't show up because a good thing is not newsworthy?
  16. CubmasterMike-Let your boy chose and change your handle to ASMMike. Get involved and make sure the program runs as designed. Remember your son is the Scout and he may want to be with his friends, so let him and have fun!
  17. Yes John, he worked us all into a frenzy and left us begging for more. I guess he did not like the responses of needing more info.(This message has been edited by local1400)
  18. I would say the ads ran around 78 to 80 on account of my age and the green uniforms. Not sure when muttonchops were all the rage.
  19. E, not sure what you are selling here, but I'll buy. I grew up in North-Central Maine in the 70s and 80s. One of our 6 T.V. stations (with cable!) was a kid-oriented station out of Boston, MA. Bozo the clown was on a lot. But I remember BSA commercials often (some catchy jingle like "Be Prepared, are you ready to take the lead...") and gave one of the Mass local council numbers. Now the muttonchops and red berets did not capture my interest but the activities that were demonstrated sure did and I could not wait to be a Scout. That commercial sold me on the product. Certainly a commercial today
  20. After re-reading the post describing her ordeal, it doesn't sound all that bad compared to my ordeal in 84 except that the Lodge had us in Lazy-Boys and not sitting on logs at the ceremony.
  21. Jblake, everyone knows the campaign hat was originally worn by Smokey the Bear, because only YOU can prevent forest fires! Unless it is an act of God, of course. And kids don't stand at attention to salute the flag anymore. 30 seconds is far too much time for the kiddies to focus on anything besides video games!
  22. Why not try Maine High Adventure where there is no shortage of water?
  23. Please forgive my arithmatic. The old troop will be 96 next year and 98 in 2010 for the big celebration. Maybe National will recognize those troops that have hung on for so long.
  24. That is strange. Aside from trading CSP's and Flaps, a Scouting event patch from something I didn't attend wouldn't interest me and is of no value except to the attendee.
