  1. Chip I gotta back the ladies and Gonzo1 too. You have to set limits and rules. It may be met with some looks or comments that are not Scout-like, but you can't run a program that's amok with the whole fam damily!
  2. I have several of the old plastic Magnusson slides that the kids love. I am not too handy with carving-- well, I may be too OCD and can't stand it if one side does not perfectly match the other. Next thing you knoe I've got a toothpick! Does anyone have any of those old plastic slides unpainted and unbroken? PM me if you do and are willing to part with them. I especially want the frying pan, totem pole, arrowhead, and boot tread. Neal slides are nice, but are too collectible to wear.
  3. Yeah I here ya Gern. Sometimes the apathy can be disheartening to watch. All we can do is put on the best program and hope we can continue to interest and challenge them. This is kind of what I was leaning towards when I started that BE PREPARED thread awhile back. Do they really think of the Scout Oath and Law? OTOH, have some really good kids ( more than a few from single Mom type households) who are desparate for that adventure and being with the "guys". Those that want the program I will do what it takes to make it worth their time. Things have improved for our unit recently with those hun
  4. " Encroachment- 10 yard penalty on LongHaul, repeat 2nd down." Okay, how do you guys deal with those precious few lads with ADD and can't stop moving long enough to salute? I know that particular horse just may be beaten dead, but I am curious. Have one here that is in constant motion, occasionally shrieks like a girl, and is all around disruptive/ disrespectful.
  5. Eagle90-- I am sure that was an impressive sight with the canoes and all but personally I think an Ordeal done during the Scout camp week may detract from the summer camp experience for some. Some Eagle required merit badges, nature type, are best earned at camp and in fact are sometimes hard to earn elsewhere. The cheerful service to the camp in plain sight of the other campers however, is a wonderful vision. (Or the sight of manual labor may scare them-smiley face here if I could just make them work).
  6. All the lodge did when I worked at Camp was call-out (back then we still tapped 'em out) at Friday's closing campfire. Brothers were asked to wear their sashes to dinner and so on on Friday night only. Ordeals were done in Spring and Fall--the usual camp opening and closing chores plus improvements. It always rained.
  7. BTW- the tag in those old dark green shirts of mine said " to be worn by Explorers OR Members of the Leadership Corps." I had the red patch.
  8. We rarely watch TV and only have one-13 inch screen. I don't even watch the news on account of all the doom and gloom. I must watch Deadliest Catch on the Discovery Channel though. I am hooked on those crab boat guys from Alaska!
  9. gwd- I lived in Western NC for a couple of years and wanted to check out Linville Caverns on the Blue Ridge Parkway, but didn't get the time so I can't say what it's like, other than it is there. Oooops, that's a run-on sentence, but oh well. I loved the Mountains around Asheville where there is so much opportunity so close to you.
  10. Do what YOU want to do. Do you enjoy serving these youth? Then stay. Are you unwilling to continue the effort? Then move on. Only you know whats best for you and the Pack. BTW, a Pack nearby here and a feeder for our troop just got a new CM this fall, and has lost 26 boys. Can't really say for sure, but maybe theres a problem there?
  11. Hey guys the weather here is all crazy, snow, wind, and rain- the sky is all hazy, I should go do my chores, laundry, dishes, and the grocery store, but I just feel too darn lazy!
  12. Going with the $1500 price tag divided by four years is $375.00 per year, or $1.03 per day. Whenever something looks big, break it down- it doesn't look so bad now, does it? Surely there must be someway for the Scout to earn that much money. What one sodapop a day costs for 4 years will give you a week at Jambo. Its all about desire. Now as a young Scout in the Reagan days, I wanted to attend the 86/87 World Jambo Downunder. I think that was over $2000 then- which was insurmountable with only about 12 months notice($166.67/month, or $5.48/day-but minimum wage earners only made $24/day then!)
  13. Welcome hot_foot! While you may be looking for the old wisdom its nice to see the new idea. This forum is great and I have made many friends here who all have the same goal. BTW, purple shoulder loops sound good-they would match my purple neckerchief!
  14. I have seen a boy staple his patches on. The patches are rusty now. Sewing is very practical and should be a requirement for TF.
  15. Ooooh gwd-you just dated yourself! And all this time I thought a lady NEVER revealed her age.
  16. OK you two we've had enough, put on the gloves-let's see who is tough, step into the ring, come with your best swing, and trunks so you ain't in the buff!
  17. Ahhh, Gonzo you saved this thread, I thought surely it must be dead, but I clicked on here today, you and OGE had words to say, and now they're swimming around in my head!
  18. Amen Brothers! Curiously, it is 41.2F here. Had a foot and a half of snow thursday and expecting another big storm for the weekend. The ski areas are happy!
  19. Now Scout troops forever you will see!
  20. I had experienced the problem described under the bug alert section regarding establishment of an on-line account. Glad to see they are working on this. Will wait awhile longer.
  21. Brought 22 Scouts to Brownsea Island(This message has been edited by local1400)
  22. LongHaul, I usually agree with your posts, but I think if the SM had the ability to impeach it would go against the Boy-led plan. I saw firsthand what happened when the boy Elected by his peers to replace me as SPL when I moved up to JASM was removed by the SM in favor of the SMs son. The impeached left Scouting. His two older brothers were both Eagles. He, like me, is in the Life Scouts Forever Club.
  23. That boy needs the troop more than ever now. Make the effort to keep him involved and even offer to assist with transportation to/from Scouts to help out Mom.
  24. A Scouter from Georgia is Gonzo1, his son and the troop is having fun, He doesn't like dining halls, or the Elvis collars at all, but he can crack your back when you're done.
