  1. I will say for my company, DEI has gone well (overall). There are a few times where I think it went sideways, but overall we have greater pools of talent for hiring, our profits have increased substantial over the last few years and year end bonuses are the highest they have ever been. Personally, I have been happy with my career progression. When I hire, I have never been pressured to hire an under or unqualified candidate. If someone quits because they are against diversity, inclusion or equity... So be it. I haven't seen many people quit my company and definitely no one with t

  3. As an engineer, I like to follow rules., but they need to be clear What drives me crazy is the FAQ becomes like an amendment to the rules. Two deep is a good example of catchy (well, it has become catchy, but it works).

  4. I know probably the best employee at our local council is gay. He was promoted and I didn't know he was gay until after he left. The council is worse off after he left. If DEI helps us get employees from more walks of life and expands the pool of talent, I don't see it as a negative. If it is used to push out people than I have an issue with it. I think how an organization handles DEI is really what is important. I'm not an employee of BSA so I'm not sure how they are using it.

  7. I am not asking about random companies around the country, this is a forum on scouts and scouting. Let's focus on that. We should look at if BSA Scouts is excluding others, inhibiting opportunities for scouts or scouters.

  9. I know I certainly don't feel excluded or pushed out by the existence of all the affinity groups that aren't for me, which is most of them. Be welcome, have at it. Just like I don't feel slighted when a meeting opens with a round of applause for veterans but not me, a non-veteran. Exactly because I haven't seek the tiniest inkling of special favor a la sauna dealmaking.

  10. I guess the question is if the affinity groups are causing others to be excluded. Is that occurring? Are the affinity groups resulting in other groups being denied advancement, opportunities, are there new standards that only the groups have to follow, but are stricter/more lenient with the group you associate with? IS that special treatment or recognition occurring?

  11. Why do you say that? where is that happening? Are you saying that white males are being pushed out of scouting? Where?

  12. Mine too. All of them. One of my bosses responded rapidly to a somewhat problematic situation with a co-worker and I never had to deal with that harassment again at one job. HR helped a few folks a level below me with harassment issues, one of which had also raised eyebrows quite widely and so was quite important to deal with. The nonwhite nonstraight nonmale workers that were excellent at their jobs were recognized as being such and promoted at least at most of my employers. (An exception comes to mind.) But I have never heard anyone say that we should give an iffy candidate a chanc

  13. "High Adventure" is whatever your Scouts say it is 😜 Backpacking by itself is not. But backpacking 15 miles over a weekend on the Appalachian Trail (AT) might be HA for your 13 year old's who are new to the experience. It might have to be backpacking 50 miles on the AT over 5 days and four nights for your older Scouts to say it is HA. If your Scouts want a High Adventure experience, let them help define what it means to them.

  14. I am attempting to engage you in civil discourse, rather than jumping to conclusions of what you're actually trying to say, your motivations, and your opinions. I am asking you to articulate clearly and factually what you think. This is because without you stating your position clearly and factually, civil discourse is a nonstarter and this thread is, at least in response to you specifically, not going to be civil and as such lacks value for scouting. I am not asking you questions because I cannot find information and form an opinion of my own on it, I am asking you questions to ensure that I

  15. What is the hidden message? I do think there are more girls and gay scouts than there were in the past (so in part it is working). I'm not sure about other groups.

  16. There is theory and reality in the OP question. Question for the former pros here....Did you receive any Customer Service training in your job? and Did you receive any "how to "manage" a volunteer workforce" training? Seems like obvious necessary training for a DE to me since your workforce can make or break you. If the DE has a "I'm in charge" attitude then his volunteers will say "Yes you are", and you will fail quickly. Servant Leadership is essential. JMHO.

  17. I think what @Mrjeffmay be hinting at is that if you disagree with some elements of a DE&I initiative and voice your concerns in a tactful manner, you still risk being labeled the "worst type of person imaginable." There is no room for discourse in some public spaces and I find that scary. As a moderate conservative myself, I share some of his concerns (and wouldn't mind engaging in productive discussion around the others). Ultimately, it probably behooves us all to be 10% kinder and 10% more understanding (and maybe to love one another ... where have I heard that before? πŸ˜‰) Even

  18. The other recommendation is to work with your PLC on what they want to do (including what type of summer camp, what activities, etc). You can have your PLC spend time with the Scouts to understand their feedback on what they want to do over the summer - coaching and mentoring the PLC as the SM on options on camps and activities. Many camps will provide the Scouts overviews. Once you have what the Scouts would like to do, where they would like to go, then it’s time to go to the Committee for help on coordinating (registration, tracking payments, etc, are areas recommended to delegate to

  20. We once had a Commissioner show up at a B/G to present the Pack Charter. I am not exaggerating, he looked like a North Korean General. He was a long time Scout/Scouter and was wearing EVERY possible award that had ever been presented to him, from the Bobcat pin to his youth MB sash, OA sash, medals, neck ribbons, etc.

  21. TBH the rule that you need a female leader around girls all the time sounds a little accusatory of men's character in general to me, despite the statistics. If the idea is that only a woman would protect girls from sexual abuse, what does that imply about all the other male leaders?

  22. I wear my Eagle knot, and none others. (Not even sure what knots I might have earned, though, District Award of Merit, and Silver Beaver, are among them.) It is all about the youth. Not about me. I have at least 8 Eagle mentor pins. (Our troop has had the practice of only having an Eagle presenting a single Mentor Pin. Eagles one per I wear none of them. Those who need or want to know, they know.

  23. It does seem a little harsh to threaten immediate legal action, but I understand it better in this case than in suing the BSA over giving girls the option to scout there as well. GSUSA seemingly, if not actually, getting sucked into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as taking a side could set a whole chain of destructive reactions into motion and tarnished the reputation of the scouting movement as a whole. The same political tensions that are bouncing around politicians (can't please both pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian constituents) would follow into scouting, and promptly create a rift betwee

  24. We make earning the awards fun 😜 Fun with a purpose. The purpose is to experience the personal growth (and other Scouting methods) reached while pursuing the award. The award is simply a "tangible" milestone marking the intangibles we experience along the way...
