  1. I disagree. The committee members from the old troop are saying the BOR never took place. If the BOR never took place, the signatures in the book are invalid.
  2. Then you will need to consider how this will effect your ability to recruit Webelos.
  3. I am sorry to say this, Pete, but my impression is that you are putting most of your time and attention on the little guys and neglecting the Webelos. You need to consider how this will effect the Webelos.
  4. Though you currently have no prospective FG girls older than 5 years old right now, that could change very quickly. How would you deal with it if a few older girls sign up tomorrow?
  5. When I became an IH, I was told that the IH is the only person who is allowed to serve in more than one position in a unit. He/she can serve as IH and in one leadership position. It makes sense to me that a scout leader should only be allowed to serve in one position in a unit. Otherwise, a leader could be his/her own supervisor.
  6. There seems to be a consensus on this forum that it is very important for scouts to stay with their friends. I find this interesting because I don't see this happening so much in sports. Most boys choose a sports team based on the activity and the quality of the program, not on whether or not their friends will be on the same team. In fact, most youth sports programs don't even bother to consider the boys' friendships when they divide up the teams. Youth athletes seem to be more adventurous and resilient when it comes to meeting new people and making new friends. They are more wil
  7. I'm glad to hear you say that your son will ultimately make the choice. You invited us to ask questions. About option 4, the troop initially associated with your pack. Are you saying that both units are owned by the same Chartered Organization? Would your family prefer to stay with the same CO? Does your family have any ties or membership with a CO that has a troop? Is that a factor? Would your son have any preferences based on the CO's who own the troops?
  8. Jim, It is possible to deceive without actually telling a lie. I'll give you an example. I was a Lone Scout. I never participated in a Boy Scout troop as a boy. I was never in a patrol. When I first applied to be a scout leader, I neglected to tell the CO that my experience as a Boy Scout was in the Lone Scouting program. They naturally assumed that I had been in a troop. I did nothing to correct their incorrect assumption. I didn't lie, but I now feel that I had deceived them. I didn't feel that way at the time, but I do now. I am not proud of what I did. I don'
  9. I think what you are asking is whether or not it is possible for you to game the system. Yes, people do it all the time. There really is no need for an agnostic to join the Unitarians in order to get into BSA. You can pick any religion. Once you have decided to deceive, there really is no need to limit yourself to any particular church. Pick any one you want. Nobody is going to ask to see a membership card. Scouting is an activity based on trust and honor. We generally take people at their word.
  10. I would let him go. Then again, my CO wouldn't have accepted him in the first place.
  11. Oh, your unit just changed CO's. That explains a lot. It is not at all unusual for a new CO to make changes in unit leadership.
  12. That is nonsense. It is like saying that criminals do us all a public service by strengthening our support for law and order.
  13. You asked for advice. Here it is. It is not your job to decide who gets to be on the committee. That is the COR's job. So don't worry about it. Let the COR worry about it. You say that you have no idea where the COR is in all this. Unless you actually know differently, assume that the COR is behind all of these changes. You should not want to inadvertently cross the COR. The CC is the boss of the front line scouters (CM, ACM, DL). Accept it, acknowledge it, and work with it. For your own peace of mind, try to believe that the CC and the committee are keeping you on as a l
  14. I am not exactly sure what you mean by a coup. I hope I can be helpful by explaining a few things about how a scout unit works, from my point of view. The IH is the head of the Chartered Organization (CO) that charters a scout unit. The IH appoints the Chartered Organization Representative (COR). The COR recruits and appoints the Committee Chairman (CC) and the Committee Members. The IH is the person with all the power, but he/she will usually delegate much of it to the COR. Together, the IH and the COR have total administrative authority over the unit. They can, at any time, r
  15. You can't force adult volunteers to give more of their time than they're willing to give. Every unit has limitations. Even boy-led units have limitations. If the availability of adult volunteers is this unit's limitation (and the boys are unhappy about it), then the boys need to get up off their backsides and recruit some more volunteers. I would suggest that they start with their dads.
  16. I think there is only one way for a group of boys to have any chance of convincing the committee. They must first convince a few of their dads to get registered, to get trained, and to go on the trip with them. Convincing the dads is the hard part. After that, convincing the committee is a breeze.
  17. Not true. I did not claim that Donald Trump would have been a good scout solely because he went to a military school. In my post, I also mentioned his playing sports and working at his father's construction company. I did not single out his military school education. You can focus on his military school education, if you want, but that is not responding to what I said in my post. Not really.
  18. Fred says that it is a YP issue for a 17 year old scout to tent with an 11 year old scout. Where do we draw the line, then? I think if I were an older scout (15, 16, 17), and I heard scout leaders and parents talking that way, I would high-tail-it out of scouting. For me, it would become be a youth protection issue, my protection! We already have a shortage of scout leaders who are willing to take boys camping. Now we want to create a shortage of skilled older scouts?
  19. I would strongly disagree with Skeptic's assertion that few scouts care about what has been happening in BSA. Boy Scouts have gotten the reputation of being a bunch of nerds, misfits, and special education kids. Now you can add gay and transgender to the list. My boys don't like being tarred with that brush. They don't like to be thought of that way.
  20. BSA is non-sectarian. There is no requirement that the Chartered Organization or individual members of a unit be non-sectarian in their religious beliefs. Most Chartered Organizations are churches who are, by definition, sectarian. A scout is perfectly free to believe in his religion, and not believe in others. A scout should never be asked to concede the inferiority (or mere equality, for that matter) of his faith. That is outrageous.
  21. SSScout included the Knights of Columbus in his list of groups who can charter scout units. Not the Knights of Columbus. The Catholic Church has instructed the KC's to not charter scout units anymore.
  22. Of course I'm not comparing an 8 year old girl to Satan. She is his victim, not his accomplice.
  23. My unit still uses a campground that has group showers. Now, my boys aren't all geniuses, but I think they would figure out that Johnny is really Jane.
