4 of my ticket items! FCFY NSP JLT ASM NSP SM minutes Disclipine of Scouts Sorry could not limit it to one!

I have been talking to fellow ASM about our kids and the war. My son is 13, and the other SMs have sons that are from 12 to 14. What we have found out from these boys is that the are worried that we (they) may be attacked, because of this war. Bottom Line talk to your kids! Which I probably didn't need to say here!! What I see in Scouters is that we have a very good line of communication with our sons!

When you have elections coming up for SPL, do you allow politicking? Do you allow those with their hats in the ring to get up a give a speech on why they should be elected? How do you handle these elections? Is there any guides from the BSA on this? I remember the discussion on this board about bribing for elections but not about politicking. After thinking about this for awhile, I would like you thoughts also on allowing the bribing, but than the SM could get up before the elections and do a SM minute about why it could be bad to vote for someone who used bribery to get votes and what kind of leader they would be. This is all just theoretical I have not seen bribing. But we have been discussing the politicking and the leaders are split on this.

GOAL #2: Develop Job Descriptions for the position of Assistant Scoutmaster, New Scout Patrols. The troop did not really have a New Scout Patrol program. 3 of my ticket items address this. It has been an uphill battle to try and get the leaders (adult and scouts) on board. The job descriptions utilized 11 Things I learned as Scoutmaster, Lessons and Suggestions on Boy-Run troops Part 1 AND 2. I owe you and Larry a BIG thank you for writing that. I was in process of writing up about the same thing when I found that site, which saved me about 2 weeks of typing and thinking! I did not write a job description, just a page of information on what NSP is and how it should be ran, (troop guides) I am sorry to say that most likely that it is going to fail. The ASM for NSP which are mostly 2nd year leaders do not believe in the NSP program. The older leaders have never heard of NSP! Change is very hard in this troop. The SM is a great guy, but in over his head. The SM and the Committee all say that a Scout should never fail, which means if they have a POR and do not perform it, it is ignored. This is a large troop 91 scouts are registered, 15 new scouts this year. Before anyone says it, almost all leaders are trained. It is mostly a boy run troop, but it is all by the seat of the pants, very little planning for meetings or outings. It is the best troop in the area, which is why it is so large. I believe if NSP was used, this troop would grow even more and split into 2, would have split long ago, if they utilized NSP, years ago, drop out rate is about 60% for First year Scouts. These are not issues they are opportunities!!! Thanks for letting me vent!

Eagledad Where does the bully/troublemaker go? I used that website to help with my ticket!

I would suggest that you keep buddys together. Read the info here, to see why I think that. http://www.iss.westhost.com/scouts/index.cgi

Greg19 Cool ideas! I bookmarked your troops website, looks like the scouts would enjoy them! OGE Befoew, to you also!

chucklehead1985 IMHO I would turn your statement around to fit what I thought the BSA is trying accomplish. Scouting should turn the bad to the good Not Scouting truly sorts the good from the bad I realize that this is not possible every time, but I believe that should be one of all troops goals. When I say good, I am not talking about good knot tiers, good campers, or good tent pitchers.
-
chucklehead1985No offense intended. You stated the goal of scouting was to "divide the CREAM OF THE CROP with the garbage" To put it bluntly, Scoutings goal could be said, IMHO, to take the g******* (sorry could not use that word) and turn it the cream of the crop This is an forum to exchange ideas and thoughts, to post here you need to keep an open mind (and sometimes have a thick skin) and try to look at both sides of the ideas and or issues. Stick around and you may learn a few new things and/or teach a few new things. dan

chucklehead1985 Everyone here is trying to help. Stick around and read and ask questions and you will learn allot. I did! The size of a troop is not a indicator of a good troop. Nor the number of eagles produced. The committee job is to provide transportation and to make sure that the program is following the correct path. Do you fell your troop is boy run? Could it be better? I have yet to see a troop that could not improve in some way. If you do not follow the patrol method, what method do you follow? Do you have a special handbook that does not use the patrol method, requirements to camp and cook for your patrol? Do you know what the goal of Scouting is?
-
chucklehead1985 A Scoutmaster should never be a boss. A boss is someone who gives orders and other people follow them. Now a higher higher Authority, No I do not believe that a Scoutmaster should be a higher authority either. A Scoutmaster SHOULD be a leader. A good leader leads by asking questions, pointing out reference so that real leaders (the SPL and his team) can run the troop. It should not be the SPL running the troop is should be him and his team which he selected. I understand why you wanted to check to make sure it was okay to send this info out, but not sure how good it is, all of the info you need is within the Handbook and other BSA books. I am hoping that it was just a wording issue and your troops SM is not a higher authority. Do you understand what I am trying to say? The written word is not my strong suit! Bottom line is your troop boy run? Do the scouts decide where they will go for high adventures, campouts, plan the campouts, in writting, plan and run the meetings, with a agenda?
-
By this I don't mean to say that the meeting was chaotic, it wasn't. It moved along and eveything got done in an orderly fashion, but not with military percision Thats the one you should try to get your son to join!! Most likely that is the one that is most boy run!!!

Have you purchased popcorn from walmart, kmart or venture and compared it with Trails end popcorn? I thought that all popcorn was equal until I did this. After eating the trail end products, I want nothing to do with the cheap stuff! It is a little overpriced, but you are just not buying the popcorn! You are helping another boy become a scout!

I am totally confused!?!? 1. The chartered organization selects its own leaders. I have no authority to remove this dude just because he's a sexist jerk. Are you saying only the CO is able to remove a leader no matter what?!? Could not the BSA remove him for being a racist? 3. This guy is the cubmaster in a small one pack town and has over 100 active boys. That doesn't excuse his behavior or his comments, but must be considered in the solution. I don't want to hurt or risk hurting, the program for those boys in his pack. Are you sure it would not be better not to have a pack at all than with this guy running it? What is he teaching the Cubs?

cracker Barrel = dinner on friday night after the camp is set up. It is by patrol. Could start anywhere from 9pm to 12pm, whenever camp is all setup. A little summer sausge, cheese, crackes, maybe some trail mix.

I would redo some of the training, so it is not so understated. Possibly a simple test after the training course to see who did and did not "get it". Understated = Drill leaders with the Aims and Methods not hint at them.

I think this comment needs some clarifaction. Could I tell you what your ticket should look like? Yepper! Am I going to? Nope. ?!?!? You will have direct controls over your ticket, to improve your troop, pack, den, district, etc. No one can tell you what your ticket should be but you! Your troop guide will guide you, but it will be up to you to put the AIMS and Methods into your unit. Your guide cannot see into your unit and what needs to be done, so it will be up to you. Dsteele Not casting stones, I think I know what you meant. But you could not really write a ticket for someone that would benefit their unit could you? I would love to do woodbadge again!! I used to be a fox. (This message has been edited by dan) -
