Requirement 7b for 1st class Demonstrate tying the timber hitch and clove hitch. It sounds like all of yous guys, are saying a scout has to memorize these knots. The book says to demonstrate this could be done with the book open and the scout tying the knot while reading the handbook. No where does it say memorize. It is the job of the troop to make sure the scouts have the chance to use the knots through out the scouting program to learn them and memorize them.

Every participant made there our beads during the 1st weekend of Woodbadge. They where made from oak dowel rods purchased from any old hardware store. There is a string of beads about 20 feet long, these we where told where the ones that where made and never earned.

Why did I get 3 security alerts when I went to that link FOG? A little more info on fringe. Records indicate that fringe was first used on the flag as early as 1835. It was not until 1895 it was officially added to the National flag for all regiments of the Army. For civilian use, fringe is not required as an integral part of the flag, nor can its use be said to constitute an unauthorized addition to the design prescribed by statute. It is considered that fringe is used as an honorable enrichment only. Info from http://www.legion.org/our_flag/of_flag_code.htm

molscouter It is in the Issues section, because the last 3 times in was discussed, it went pretty much the same way as it did this time. If I remember correctly the same posters said the same thing the last 2 times also. And it gets a little heated, so I say yes it is in the correct forum! An ASM should not sit on a BOR. The BOR should be staffed by Committee members.

Yes, and what about that Gold Trim that most churches have around the American Flag!

Laurie Merlyn has written in the past that he does not want to destroy the BSA, just change it. I do not believe him. Which I why I asked him if he thought the 16 scouts where better off now. His answer has made up my mind. He wants to destroy it just like www.scoutingforall.org (which he has pointed us to before) if he was trying to change it with scoutlike ways I would have a little respect for him.
-
Merlyn Leroy Lets try this. Is it your opinion that the 16 Scouts from Venture Crew 488, are better off now that they are not part of the BSA? If you believe they are better off, please tell me why, because it sure seems like a lose lose situation to me.

River2K I would suggest if there is a Mrs. River2K sit down and talk with her, to make sure she will support you. Without your spouses' support it will just be that much harder. I would also sit down with your son, to make sure he is also okay with it. Being the SM son is not always the easiest assignment. I have put my name in the hat for my sons' troop, it took me 2 months of debate to decide to do this. A little different situation than yours. My descision was based on talks with my wife and son and I finally said if not me than who? I looked around the troop at the other leaders and asked myself, is there anyone here that knows the program better or as good as I do and the answer was no. This forum is a great resource that you can call on at any time for any questions or help that you need. Without this forum and the insight that I have received here, I probably would not have put my name in the hat. I have found that dealing with the boys is easy, it the adults that will really test you!

Merlyn_LeRoy Why would I ask them if YOU thought they where better off? ED cause you aren't very god at the legal eagle part! That was quite a Freudian slip, on the keyboard.
-
Most do not.
-
Do you really think that the boys care how long a unit has been in exsistant?
-
Merlyn_LeRoy Do you believe that the 16 members of Venture Crew 848 are better off now, now that they are no longer a part of the BSA? If this has been asked before sorry, but I do not feel that reading through the 6 pages of posts was the best use of my time.

I read this and thought Bob White has mixed up Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. (must be from that vacation he took, he probably needs a vacation from that vacation) I went to the BSA web site, looked under Cub Scouts and what is the first thing I see? The Boy Scout Oath and Law! Ok, I thought Cub Scouts is part of Boy Scouts. But they do not learn the Oath until they are in Webelos. So I have to ask, would you give the same advice if this is a bear or wolf scout? and welcome back!

The 2 Summer Camps as a Boy Scout, 1st year at the old council camp, 2nd year at the opening of the new council camp, did not earn one merit badge, but had a good time! As a 14 year old Explorer Scout flying from Northern Illinois to camp outs in Kentucky and Missouri for the weekend. As with today kids, half of them had brought junk food to "snack" on and at least 5 of them got sick from the turbulence. The pilot shut down one of the engines, and we all freaked, but it sure got quiet in that plane! Sitting through ground school as an Explorer Scout. Flying with an instructor. (never did solo) "Summer Camp" at the airport that sponsored us, painting the light beacon, mowing the grass, painting the hangars. Going to the lake behind the airport and swimming at 11oclock at night. Talking with my son after den meetings, that I thought did not go well, and him telling me that it was a great meeting. Presenting my son (and 5 other cubs) every rank in Cub Scouts except Tiger. Watching my son being tapped out this spring. And how nervous he was about the "ordeal". He kept asking me what was an ordeal so I got the dictionary out and showed him. This only made him more nervous. Watching my son "grow up" in the Boy Scouts, It amazing how much difference 3 years make in a Scout! I believe that when they are looking for a model scout, they should use him as an example, but I might be a little bias.

I agree completely with FOG (I did not think I would ever say that!) Buswell said she told crew members about the statement, but did not ask for their opinions. "I've been pretty careful not to involve the youth," she said. Not involve the youth in Scouting there's a novel approach.

NO NO If you look at a dentist charts, each tooth is numbered on the chart, so when I typed out he had to have his fourth tooth pulled, I meant the tooth numbered 4 on the chart. And what doe that have to do with my Moms home state? Beam me up Scotty there is no intellegent life down here.

Rudd Yes, I also beleive that everyone is very close to saying the same things. But the little minute gap that is separating us is very deep. So, instead of assuming this time I will ask. So are you saying that if scouts are doing a good job you will somehow set them us for failure? Do you think it is okay for scouts to joke around with leaders? Your message come off like you would control everything we an iron fist. Sometimes with this format it is hard to tell. What is your capacity, do you only work with the district or are you also with a Boy or Cub Scout troop/pack? I also do not consider a Boy Scout a child, as I work with the scouts I am not thinking, look at those children playing with fire, I see Boy Scouts, starting a fire, and cooking a meal over it.

What the heck is a a four teeth pulled do you be meaning he had to have his fourth tooth pulled?

I guess I made a bad assumption, when you said you where not going to stand there and take it what did you mean? If not yelling? Lets not get into the Council President. Lets try and stay with the secnario we where talking about, as long as you keep bringing up other scenarios, we will not be able to get all of our points across. If they are required to be outside to meet their parents at a given time and are not because they had to stand around wasting a half hour, it also punishes the parents. (If a parent wants to get his kid at the appointed end of the meeting, fine by me.) Okay by me to, but the SM conference would address this, and I would also be talking to the parent. Why are you worry about wasting the scouts time, they are doing that, and the parents need to know this also. Are you honestly telling me that you stand around and take disrespect off of children, even to the point of standing around for a half-hour just to avoid taking command of the situation that the SPL has failed to control (if it takes 30 minutes, he has failed)? I have trouble believing that. No, but I am trying! And scouts will be boys. But I still maintain we need to train the SPL to be able to do this! You seem to be avoiding this one point, why? WE train the SPL so next time he can take control! We do not take control so the SPL will be able to do it the next time or the next time. As long as we step in we become enablers, and we are the problem. Can you not see how this works? You competely ignored this in you last 2 posts. But it sounds like you think this discussion is a waste of your time??!! Why
-
What are you telling the boys if you are rushing in to take control. You are telling the SPL you are not a strong enough leader to do it, and you are also telling the scouts not to listen to the boy leaders. Because nothing will happen until the adults get involved. Lets say you worked for me?!?! and everytime a certain job was to be performed, I would do it and not allow you to do it, because you did not do it well one or two, three, four times, what am I telling you? What kind of leader am I? Not a very good one because I have not trained you how to do your job. Our jobs as adult leaders is to train the scout to be leaders as long as we countuine to jump in and do the job, we are only training in poor manangment. Now to the fact that you did not get a good nights sleep, I would suggest a few hours less sleep for a night will not hurt you or move your tent farther away from the patrols, as it should be in patrol camping. For your point about the scouts not be quiet during the SM minute, you where talking about the minute where you not, I would stand there for as long as it takes, be it 1 minute to a hour. Of course this is going to make the meeting run longer than scheduled, and the parents would have to wait for there sons. Now if your troop is like my sons troop you will have scouts leaving early, because the meeting was suppose to be over at 8:30 and not 9:00, I would be having a SM conference with these scouts at the next meeting! As you see as a Adult leader I would get involved but only at the correct time. Your point about A grown man is generally going to carry more weight with a boy than another boy. This is only true if we let it be true. If someone from the district came to a troop meetings and started to yell at the scouts to be quiet. You can be sure you would never speak at the troop meeting ever again, as long as I was there!
