  1. That is likely where your $24 goes. We can spend quite a bit of money at CoH time, particularly after summer camp, when the number of merit badges earned can be significant. Each merit badge your scout earns is $2.49, each rank patch is $1.99, we also give parent rank pins which are $2.49. Position patches are $2.99. It adds up quickly.
  2. Doing that backwards. Shouldn't you have thrown those interns into the volcano ahead of time, thus warding off the increase???😋
  3. Not as bad as it could have been. Without any increase our cost would have been $50 per scout, $33 to National, and $17 to Council. This will put our per scout cost at $77. With a little belt tightening I think both of my units will be ok.
  4. Explorers are now a part of Learning For Life.
  5. I both got an e-mail from Scouting Wire and saw it on multiple Scout related Facebook pages.
  6. Actually, building the latrine was one of the first things we had to do at the start of my week long Wood Badge course back in '72! Didn't even count toward my ticket!!🤣 We usually end up sharing a campsite, since we generally take a dozen or so to camp. We then switch off days with the other troop being responsible for cleaning the shower room.
  7. Well, we are both Floridian's, but it looks like you are just north of me, in North Florida Council. I am in Central Florida Council, and was referring to the set up at Camp La-No-Che. We were at Woodruff in July of 18. That was the camp that labeled the adult showers as for both adult and for female youth. There were quite a few of them in the block we used, so there were no issues (also, if I remember correctly, there were no female units that used that particular shower block) Daniel Boone had a shower house with 18 individual rooms; I think that the fact that they all had locking
  8. In many cases I would agree; fortunately, not in all cases.
  9. I agree with the 'don't wait until the last minute' thing, and what it does to those of us who have to stand in front of a room full of parents and or Scouters and explain that we are not the ones to be throwing stones at when these things are announced just before taking effect. My DC and I were on the way to a meeting at the council office this past Sunday, and were in agreement that if there absolutely has to be a fee increase, it should wait until re-charter time NEXT year. I do at times wish there was something better than popcorn to raise funding that helps both the troop and the c
  10. Sound advice, although the situation being referred to took place 14 years ago. 😀
  11. Not yet, unless it came out today, in which case I will not see it until I get home late this evening. (I cannot access home e-mail account on a work computer) Any hints as to what they are asking about?? We have been anticipating something in the way of tightening up on AIA. I am in Tipisa Lodge, Central Florida Council, by the way, and celebrated the 50th anniversary of my Ordeal ceremony while at summer camp this year.
  12. We do this type activity on both the district and council levels. We have a district led Webelos Woods in November, and a council led Webelos to Scout Transition weekend in December.
  13. Would these be the ones you are referring to? The plain green and silver was the standard SM patch; the second version with the mylar threads showed that the SM was fully trained. Still have both, first worn in 1975.
  14. My nephew loves those flavors, especially the strawberries and cream. Tear the top off of the pack, pour in a little water (straight from the water bottle), stir and eat. Great when you want to get going quickly when backpacking or on the river. Some dried fruit, some hard cheese, and off we go.
  15. These I have seen some of them carry. To some of them, anything below 70 is like an arctic expedition.
  16. I doubt any of my scouts own those items here in chilly, chilly, Florida.😀
  17. I am pretty sure that it was around when I took the troop there in the mid-70's.
  18. Mine does, and so do a number of others in our troop.
  19. Yes, but without those ads, I am sure that Boy's Life would cost Scouts far more than the $12 annual rate they now pay, and Scouting would definitely not be going out to every registered Scouter.
  20. Just home from our CoH, which was MC''d by my great-nephew. He was nervous up until the microphone was in his hand, and then proved that he has never in his life met a stranger, or been in a group that he was not able to charm.
  21. Attend a meeting of your city, town, or county council or school board; OR a municipal; county, or state court session. - Citizenship in the Community Attend a public meeting (city council, school board, debate) approved by your counselor where several points of view are given on a single issue. Practice active listening skills and take careful notes of each point of view. Prepare an objective report that includes all points of view that were expressed, and share this with your counselor. - Communication Considering that HOA meetings are not one of the kind listed in the requi
  22. As I mentioned earlier, most of my MB's are for scouts in my own troop, so we have been associating with each other all along the way. I am also our district roundtable commissioner, and we offer MB's at most of our roundtables. Tonight was session #3 of 4 for a group working on Citizenship in the Community. The counselor has spent years developing the civics program taught in our state (I asked one of the scouts after session #1 how he liked it - he replied 'Man, that guy really knows his stuff!' He will end up not only earning the MB, but I am sure will benefit in the classroom as well.
  23. I also prefer to spend time with the scout, and it is rare for it to be just a hand me the blue card and get signed off, typically at least two and sometimes 3 or more meetings take place. That being said, I am in a district that has a plethora of MB counselors, so most of the scouts I work with are in my own troop. When they come to me for hiking, camping, cooking, etc., I have already been working with them all along. We have spent time during and after a backpacking trek discussing the ins and outs of the MB, ie - you have packed these same items on multiple trips; have you ever actually
