  1. She isn't a member of the troop. She is, as you state, a tag along. Same rules should apply that would govern any other non-member of the troop that happens to be on site during a troop event. Correct. Not the troop's responsibility any more than a boy that was a tag along non-member of the troop. No, but we adult arm-chair lawyers can sure find ways to muck it up more than it need be. Troops are not responsible for non-members.
  2. No, again, the OP asked about a registered female cub that was a tag along. G2SS refers to members of the troop (e.g. your quote, "every unit serving females)." A tag along, even one registered as a female cub, is not a member of the troop.
  3. Ya, they muddied the water with that graphic. I think my reply still remains valid though. Non-troop scouts (cubs of either gender) at a troop event are the responsibility of the parent and not the troop and if a scouter wants to bring his family to a troop event, the troop does not have to supply female leaders just because the family might include scouting females. They are not a member of the troop - they are not the responsibility of the troop.
  4. I did see any reply to this so if this reply is redundant, ignore it. Family Scouting refers to Cub Scouts, not Troops. If there are tag alongs at a Troop outing then that tag along is there is a person unaffiliated with the Troop regardless of their youth membership in cubs and they would be the responsibility of the attending parent.
  5. I am not sure where you are getting that implication. I simply stated that the requirements for advancement can be achieved in four months but the other recognition takes a year. In other words, the Den Chief should qualify for their Conference just like any other scout in an authorized position. Doesn't mean they quit being a Den Chief.
  6. Thank you, yes it was procedural. Since rank advancement only requires four months but the service award requires a full year of service, how do you handle those that meet the former but not the later?
  7. I have to quibble a little bit. The Pack the Den Chief serves does not have to be in any way connected to the Pack (or vice versa). A Den Chief could chose to serve a pack that ends up sending all of their scouts to a different troop. In our area, Packs and troops are not so connected. It is not uncommon for scouts in the same den to choose different troops.
  8. How do you define such when the position of authority is not within the troop? Den Chief is service to a Pack, not a troop but is an approved position of responsibility for this requirement. As a SM, what would you require of the scout in order to demonstrate that the scout has "serve[d] actively" enough to sign off on their Conference?
  9. Not specifically detailed in this story but I feel like the Scouters may have failed him by not encouraging him to get his Life two months earlier than he did. It certainly should have been common knowledge, and the Scouters should have been well aware, that they had a 17 yr old Star scout that NEEDED to get to Life by a very specific date if he had any hope of earning Eagle.
  10. Thanks! I guess I should have listened further. Edit At the 4:05 mark or so he also calls the new organization "Scouting BSA." Later he states that his daughter will probably not be "a Boy Scout" because she is already in Venturing. Very sloppy. You never know, competition might actually make Girl Scouts stronger. Lack of competition makes entities lazy. Girl Scouts may now have to step up their game. As a father of a girl who is in both, bring on the competition. I want what is best for my daughter, not what is best for an organization she might join
  11. No, the guy states that in February 2019, girls will be able to join "Boy Scouts" (his words). He goes on to state that "sometime in 2019" we will have our first female Eagle Scouts. He clearly implies that girls will be able to join in February and earn their Eagle by the end of the year.
  12. Same here. I watched that clip and that guy doesn't appear to have any clue as to the fact that being an Eagle Scout has a time in rank commitment that cannot be surpassed by simply being 16 (as he seems to elude to by mentioning his daughter's age). At first thought, I was hoping that he was just being sloppy with his terms but it doesn't appear that such is the case. The only possible exception I can think of might be female Venturers but I am not versed enough in that program, or the cross-credit scouts receive in such, that would allow a female Venturer to earn Eagle quicker than a fe
  13. Does your daughter exist for the benefit of Girl Scouts or the other way around?
  14. How does the scout get it to the council? Mail? Hand deliver? Seems like a lot of work for both the scout and the council to have one centralized destination for all MB records. Does the council then notify the troop that one of their scouts earned a MB and someone should drive over and buy a new patch? Our council is a 45 minute drive - one way. I assume many others have it worse. I don't think I would want to have to either mail in a card or personally deliver it each time my son earned a MB.
  15. Long way to go. I've yet to get confirmation of any troops or COs that are taking an active role. I went to our last Round Table to find out and nada so far. That doesn't mean stuff isn't necessarily being planned, just that those that were there (included the DE) could not tell me of anyone that was actively working on such. Considering my district was not one that had any early adopter packs, I can't say that I am surprised. I think I might have to call my council (I think there is an actual individual responsible for this stuff) and see if they know anything.
  16. Hah! Yes, saving would be required for such a trip vs the cheaper road trip we would take to get to it next year.
  17. Bummed that 13 yr olds cannot go as attendees. My son will be a few months shy of his 14th birthday by the deadline. We might make the road trip down just to do some day visits.
  18. Practice. Crawl Walk Run. I create "actual plans" all the time for things that are never fulfilled. It is called "Be Prepared." There are many MBs that require the scout to perform drills or practice something without actually doing it. Additionally, if this MB required a scout to participate in the actual camp out after planning it, then it could easily state it, just like we see with the Backpacking MB: Absent 9e, a scout could do all of the planning and prep of #9 without actually backpacking. The specific requirement of Camping mentioned above does not state
  19. To the best of my knowledge, I don't think you can limit a parent that is an MBC from signing off on a card. The council can set higher standards for applicants to be a MBC but once approved, family relation or status is not a prohibiting factor: Scoutmasters have to grant them (scoutmasters cannot refuse to provide a card) and unless you think that there was some sort of fraud committed*, scoutmasters have to accept completed cards. *Reported via Reporting Merit Badge Counseling Concerns Form
  20. Not to be a pedant but why is this not possible at camp? It doesn't state that the actual campout has to occur or even that the scouts actually camp after setting up camp. To me, this seems very much like the difference between the Webelos Castaway #1C: Using tree limbs or branches that have already fallen or been cut, build a shelter that will protect you overnight. And the Wilderness Survival MB #8: Improvise a natural shelter. For the purpose of this demonstration, use techniques that have little negative impact on the environment. Spend a night in your shelter.
  21. As I understand it, yes, but each financial institution will implement these laws in their own way. Unfortunately, a lot of laws like this are unnecessarily vague as to how they are to be implemented (which is why so many companies either overdue it to CYA or end up paying fines for underdoing it).
  22. I work in finance and KYC laws are retroactive as it pertains to changes to existing accounts. In other words, existing accounts only require the new documentation when you try to make a change to them, as you did. It is not uncommon for entity accounts to require additional documentation to prevent fraud and money laundering. https://fin.plaid.com/articles/kyc-basics The beneficial owner issue is somewhat more new. http://www.bankerstoolbox.com/wp-content/uploads/wpaper_CDD_newrule_takeaways.pdf As expected, with the new rule, financial institutions will be required to est
  23. I don't personally want such but I DO want the other parents, the ones that are not signed up for the various scouting wires, or that don't visit the various blogs, or read their scout's magazine to get such. Just a guess, but I would bet that there are far more parents of scouts that are not proactively seeking out information from those sources and are very dependent on any information they receive from their pack or troop - and if those units don't communicate it, then those parents simply don't know. My own son's Troop never communicated it to the parents in any official way. A few of the
