  1. My take on all of these. I don't think this has to much to do with lawsuits and all that hullabaloo. My guess is membership #'s down with new rate increase and losing LDS. 1) Round tables is usually the same old faces month in month out. I haven't been in several months due to taking a breather from my husband's health issues but am wanting to get back in the fold now that I am CC for the troop. I gleam a little bit of info from each one I go to but like another said its a chance to see friends and network on some levels. They need some way to get the info out to more units and entice people to come. I have suggested raffles or a points system to where at the end of the year, an auction for goods is had. 2) oh man I see this being an issue. Yesterday on Scoutbook I ran a MB counselor list for counselors w/in 50 miles and it was 28 people(1 of whom I know just passed away). The beauty of the MBC application is being able to control at what level you can commit to. For certain badges that are rather involved or can be somewhat difficult to achieve you may want to limit how many youth you actually take on. If council keeps throwing youth at you and you can't help, you will get kicked to the curb pretty quickly. Our council is 1/4 of Florida and serves over 17K youth. I am a Truck Transportation counselor, there are not too many of us in the council. Can I handle working with potentially over 100 or more youth? Heck no. Scouting is not my full time job. 3)this will in turn take ages to actually get an answer on an issue or question. Plus certain issues pertain to your particular area of the council geographically. 3/2) So are you saying that all MBC's and other "trained" adults must be Wood Badge trained? Sounds like a money grab to charge for trainings and will quickly wear people thin. Its like pulling teeth to get people to do the required training now as it is (speaking as a former Dist. Training chair) 4) "So where are you from?" "Oh we are from B." Talk about confusion. 10 Districts alone in my council. I live in the largest city by area in the continental united states. Sounds like a bunch of cut backs about to happen at councils starting at the D.E. levels and working upwards. Not sure about other councils, we have D.E.'s and Field Directors and others upwards. Burn out galore will hit councils along with frustrated volunteers leaving.
  2. I have a scout who was recently awarded the rank of Eagle. He is asking for his letters of recommendation back for his Eagle memory book and possibly to have displayed at his ceremony. The advancement chair said he is not allowed to have those letters back. Why is this? Once the scout has been awarded Eagle, what is the harm in returning the letters to the scout? FTR I read the letters as I sat in on his Eagle BOR. His older brother received his letters back after obtaining Eagle. We have a different chair from when his brother went thru the process.
  3. Wow that's sad. Certainly a lot worse things that a young man can do with his future than enlist in the military. Seems like they would be proud...
  4. Yes, one letter did say something not totally horrible but wasn't overly glowing. The way I interpreted it was that with some prodding, the scout is helpful. It made me kind of smirk when I read it. Like "yeah I can see that"...
  5. Thanks! I tried to do a quick search in the GTA and it failed to bring up a result. I think my computer is scouted out. LOL.

    Helping Others....

Great story. I am hoping for our troop to start working on E-prep prior to June 1st (Hurricane season starts). Many people here in Florida are not very well prepared for a disaster. I have supplies but not everything we should have. But being a scouter has given me a lot of supplies needed.

    Med forms updated

Sorry to sound stupid here but what is a BB device? Tried to google it and it only came up as Blackberry devices. never mind. I re-read it and saw it was a gun. Sheesh. More coffee!!!!!
  8. Good hiking boots would be a good gift also. Sadly I am not sure if my sons feet are done growing yet. He will be 13 in March and is in a men's size 11 shoe.
  9. We have a Life scout who believes that if he starts a badge at summer camp and only receives a partial, that he does not need to find another counselor to finish up the badge. He can just finish it up at home and submit it. Am I mistaken in thinking that is not correct? From everything I read on here: https://www.scouting.org/resources/guide-to-advancement/the-merit-badge-program/ and in the official Guide to Advancement, any partials must be completed with that counselor from camp or a new one is found to complete the badge with so they can receive a signed blue card. I have recently become the advancement chair for the troop. Our new SM also agrees that this scouts impression of the MB process is not correct and is trying to explain that to him. Its beginning to look like more and more that the senior scouts were just flippantly advanced by the old advancement chair and SM and given MB's by all of the parents in the troop who just signed up for whatever the boys wanted to earn. I have attended the last 2 summer camps and neither time do we receive a signed blue cards. We get a print out of what is completed. If a scout completed the badge at camp, we fill out a blue card and attach the print out as proof of completion. So now that the old guard is gone and the gravy train has derailed said scouts & his parents are becoming difficult to deal with. Calgon take me away!

    Recommendations for off-brand Scout pants

My son has I believe 2 pairs of these. My only complaint is that the belt loops are really tight for a BSA belt. But we got them since its hot here in Florida and they are a good fit for summer camp as they dry pretty quickly. https://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/magellan-outdoors™-mens-back-country-zipoff-nylon-pant#repChildCatSku=102410545
  11. Wanted to follow up. I sat in on one of our scouts Eagle BOR last night and while there, I asked the District Advancement Chair about the not needing to find another counselor. I told him I already knew the answer as I have read the GTA and other materials but I wanted to hear it straight from the horses mouth. He confirmed that any youth needs to seek out another counselor to finish up a partial from summer camp. Can't wait for the drama to ensue from scout and his parents on this. I will simply hand them the MB section of the GTA and said let me know when you need to find some counselors for the remaining badges and walk away.

    Changing BSA's Image

I always liked the "Don't judge the hero by the size of his cape" picture as a marketing tool. Maybe do another marketing campaign similar the one they did a few years ago, with the cape and dirty scout etc. I thought it to be really clever and pardon the term "cute".
  13. Good point. I should see when the next NRA training weekend is.

    Hair-Brained Idea du Jour...

I do think some games between troops maybe fun. But coordinating that maybe a mess as I pretty much have something going on each weekend as do most of our scouts. I guess for Cub Scouts it would be a good way to try and earn the summertime pack award.

So bringing back Varsity Scouts then?

    Hair-Brained Idea du Jour...

Oh my this made me laugh out loud at my desk. Checked my calendar. Nope not April 1st. Talk about BSA/council "jumping the shark" if this is true. So when are you supposed to go camping for the weekend if you have games on Saturday? Or a Football game on Friday nights for the marching band? Sadly this is where some people have to make hard choices especially as they get older and more involved. Its a shame as sometimes you lose a really good scout. Just keep everything separate.
  17. This is what I encountered. We got the list at the end of the week and with all of the hub bub of packing up and making sure boys had showers for the trip home it got overlooked till I got home and finally saw the lists from the SM. I watched my son for one period on Thursday during the Rifle Shooting badge so I know for a fact they went over a lot more that wasn't checked off. I think the issue was like y'all have said, the youth running the classes are primarily responsible for getting the paperwork to HQ for the week. The older gentleman who was probably the NRA certified instructor never went over to the instructional shelter while I was up there. He stayed on the range while the youth went over some of the lessons. As for # of MB's offered. I imagine it depends on the size of the camps and # of participants that come each week. My son worked on earning things like pottery, sculpture and leatherwork this summer. The only real 2 outdoor badges he worked on was the rifle and archery. These 2 seem to be badges that seem like summer camp would be the best place to accomplish them, thus his disappointment of the lack of requirements marked as completed. So unless he finds another opportunity during this year, he will have to repeat those again at next years summer camp in order to earn them.
  18. I had a problem with my sons most recent summer camp and the rifle & archery classes he took. They only marked off 2H for Rifle. I know they did more than that as I went up there on Thursday to watch him shoot. They didn't mark off a lot of things that you even have to do before you even make it to the firing line. I called the camp back afterwards and the lady said she can only answer for what was put on the print out. Really? Such crap. So now my son will effectively have to start all over when he decides to find a new counselor for it. They also didn't mark off much for Archery. He made the arrow & bow string and they didn't mark it off along with several other things.

    BSA Mortgages Philmont Scout Ranch

Hmm sounding like a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul then. Hopefully not though.

    BSA Mortgages Philmont Scout Ranch

Anyone know recent years attendance #'s? The fires out there effectively cancelling one year and this years Jambo had to have hurt attendance.

    School Shooting in California

True. It just seems like the media is trying to sensationalize things.

    Teaching First Aid Stories

I sliced my thumb open last year at our district camporee. I broke knife code and was cutting towards myself and oops. I panicked as I could see white and it was bleeding pretty good so I went to our table and sat down trying to get it to stop bleeding. My son runs over and says "Ooh ooh I can help! I have earned the First Aid merit badge!". I am trying to rifle around the first aid kit to see what we have and I told him to please go away so I could collect myself. I was debating if I needed to ride down the road to get a couple stitches. Started to get a little woozy (like I said I panicked, nervous about needing stitches. I am a wimp! ) but got my self under control and found some butterfly bandages and managed to get the blood slowed down. Put some ointment on it and bandaged my hand and went back to work. Got a nice little scar from it. Funny part is, that date is apparently not very kind to me and my hands and sharp objects. It came up in my Facebook memories that several years before that I sliced my thumb open on a can lid and then last month when it was the anniversary of camporee it came up about my mishap. So for dinner that night I said lets go out to eat as I don't want to cook and chance cutting my hand again.

    School Shooting in California

Journalists are so lazy these days. Twice they misidentified this shooters association with Boy Scouts. Once calling it a squad and then a team. It irks me that papers seize the chance to sensationalize something. I read an article this article the other day and the headline is annoying. You read the article and it says this: Bellomo - who was well known among the small Minnesota as a volunteer firefighter, award-winning taxidermist and a leader of a Boy Scout troop But they choose to use his title as a BS leader to put in the headline as click bait. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7678117/Boy-Scout-leader-34-leads-police-dangerous-20-minute-chase-Valentines-Day-massacre.html

    What happened to meritbadge.org?

This is my thoughts exactly. It was very quick to be able to locate something. But if all of the MB info is on usscouts.org, I am off to bookmark that website on my computers.
