  1. Thanks for the help guys. Now that i know this stuff i am certainly going to join the crew i am looking into.
  2. Hello everyone. Some friends of mine and I are looking into joining a Venture Crew next year and we had some questions. We are all about to become Life Scouts and are working very hard towards Eagle. None of us want to have to quit regular Scouts. Can you be registred as a Boy Scout and a Venturer at the same time? As a venturer can you still take an Active role in the OA? Thank you for your time.
  3. my troop does it like this: A week before the election all prospective candidates for office (everyone serves a 1 year term and all positions are elected at the same time) go before the troop comitee and say why they want to be SPL or w/e the position is. Then if apporved (which is pretty much a garuntee as its the rule) you can run at the next meeting. The candidate w/ the higest vote total wins. In the case of Assistant Senior Patrol leader, my troop elects three as we are a very very large troop. (90 scouts)
  4. yes nldscouter, this person is a counselor for all the MBs. Bob White, im sorry for not being detailed (sarcasim) I am referring to about 10 to 13 MBs in this situation. So the procedures are very legal, there are no rules being violated here. It is just very annoying becasue this parent in question does not even offer them to us. Oh well...
  5. Being a Roman Catholic i disagree with many UUA issues but i am tolerant of all faiths and it is nice to see that Unitarian Scouts can now wear an emblem even if it isnt a UUA award. And GreyEagle, you lossed me aswell with your Pope/Catholic/War comment.
  6. this is an intersting problem in my troop. We have this one kid who's mom is counselor for a million merit badges. She has her son do all of them, never offers them to the rest of us scouts and he gets 8-10 badges at a court of honor. The thing that makes my fellow scouts and i really mad is that this kid is going to be the first in our patrol to eagle and he hates scouts. He is only getting all these badges cause he is three away from the most in troop history. I wish we had a rule against this... Sorry, i had just had to rant about this.
  7. i would take Indian lore out of the first year and put it in 2nd or 3rd. Indian lore requires a significant attention span, which most 5th or 6th graders dont have.
  8. Hello fellow Virginian! I think one helpful way to identify a troop as an "Eagle Mill" is to look around the room and first look for physical signs. Is there a plack (spelling?) honoring the troop's eagles? If so, are there many names all from around the same time period? (e.g- John Smith 2001, Alex Ward 2001, Frank Kennedy 2001, Will Dawson 2001) That might be one indication. also check the mood of the scouts. Are they into it and having fun or do they seem to be working just for MBs? since we are in a close distance to each other i wont give my troop's name but me being a 14 year old Star sc
  9. With newsgroups you tend to get alot of perverts strolling into topics. I just read a rather disgusting post in the rec.scouting or w/e it is called newsgroup. There are very sick people out there. Message boards beat newsgroups hands down any day.
  10. Be lucky that you have some degree of boy-lead activity in your troop. We have a dictator for an SPL and a SM who has been with the troop way to long and is now just bitter.
  11. I can say that as a fourteen year old boy about to make Life in May or June, i would not be happy if i was barred from getting the rank because of a non-exsistent requirment. If the scout however has not done all the leadership months that are required then by al means do not let him advance.
  12. I did my Ordeal in november 2004 and am currently an active Ordeal member in the Amangamek Wipit 470 lodge. Geroge Mason Chapter.
  13. hello all! In ur upcoming election my troop is removing this restriction. Some other leader pointed this rule out and everyone will be voting.
  14. Although i am one of the people who will always say Treasure Island is the oldest camp, this news is terrible. All the great years of debate over who is really the oldest will be no more...
  15. A problem my troop has is the pants. None of us (the scouts) like them. They are very dressy and they are way to expensive. You can buy something that looks similar, costs less, and is more comfortable for about 20 dollars less in a lot of places. Its not that we are a poor troop with poor families but some, not me, but some feel like for something so unconfortable it is a waste of money.
  16. Anarchist, thanks for all the advice. It was very useful. Again thanks to everyone who replied to this topic.
  17. Thanks for the advice everyone. I think one detail i forgot to mention was that just last week they learned knots from the co-den chief as he is doing that for his requirement for the merit badge. I think i will go with teaching them to pack a back pack. Thanks for that one Semper. Thanks again for all of your suggestions.
  18. Hi all! Currently i am working on my Communications merit badge and i want some feedback on something. One of the requirments is to teach a skill to a group or to a paticular person. I am in an easy position to do this as i am a den chief for a group of very attentive Webelos. But i dont know what i should teach. I am terible with knots. I can olny tie my shoes and tie a square knot. I have been trying to come up with something but my mind keeps drawing a blank. If i could get some feedback I'd greatly appreciate it, thanks!
  19. Beaver, remember this review only states my opinion and not firm facts. I can say though that when i attended several summers ago it was not said to have had a great 1st year program. I have heard from staff members at sinoquipe that many changes have occured between 2002 and now. I have heard from staff members because i am collecting first person accounts of camps because i am getting ready to start a camp reviewing website. If given the oppurtunity to see Sinoquipe today and would jump on it. I almost went there for a troop event last month but it was called off. If you could send email wit
  20. Hi all. Currently my troop doesnt have any oddd names. I am in the Beaver patrol, thats as weird as it gets. But on Camporees or things like that when have to split up, then names get creative. Last camporee, because of our different merit badge groups we split up into groups of friends. I was chosen as the PL for the day and we given the power to create a name. We dubbed ourselves the "Maple Leaf" Patrol. Our cheer- "Oh Canada, my home and native land, true patriots...breaks off into incoherent muttering. Everyone thought we actually were Canadian. On another trip again i had the libertys of
  21. Semper, nowadays non scouts can subscribe to Boy's Life. I always think its a little wird when i see it but what ever works... And welcome, Almost There!
  22. its funny how threads evolve! lol! Again, thanks for the advice.
  23. thanks all of you! Your words were very helpful! I can see why my adult leaders stay away now! And to the guy who mentioned the prayer to St. Francis, i know it by heart but its message is forgotten very easily indeed! On a side note, this is the first "big" post i have ever created on a message board and i belong to quite a few. I feel special! Thanks again for your words. One thing has just made my situation much easier though, the kid in my troop who is a vocal and active communist quit. Any debate we have now is 10 times less heated and fiery.
  24. i apalogize for the double post. I was trying to edit the first one and ended up double posting. Again your family is in my prayers
