  1. "I'm in Cub Scouts for my son, not for other people's politics. How do you handle such sensitive issues?" Be forthright and honest. I would tell them you feel very uncomfortable in getting involved in any parent politics, you volunteer in scouts to serve the boys only, and you have no intent to speak ill of anyone. Afterwards, if they trash talk about someone to you, ignore what they say and respond by reminding them of your position. Eventually, they will know to keep their comments to themselves.
  2. PTOs and PTAs are eligible for 501©(3) status. You need to talk to the right person in the PTO - the one that files the annual Form 990 required of the PTO. All you need is the PTO's federal employer identification number - there is no tax-exempt number. See IRS Publication 557 at www.irs.gov
  3. Welcome. Good luck with the den, hope you are having fun with it so far.
  4. Why don't you just ask the Dad the reasons why, and go from there.
  5. "How do you prefer to receive communications from District/Council that is fair and efficient to all?" I prefer e-mail. I can easily ignore it and not respond to it, if I choose.
  6. A quick internet search shows that many Council and District Klondike Derbys include Webelos. There is no prohibition on a troop conducting its own derby. In fact, it is an excellent way to build patrol (and den) unity, teamwork and spirit without the firing of starchy projectiles through a PVC tube at 400 miles an hour fueled by ignited hairspray. 7. G2SS states... "Boy Scouts are permitted to fire bows and arrows, BB guns, .22-caliber bolt-action, single-shot rifles, air rifles, shotguns, and muzzle-loading long guns under the direction of a certified instructor, 21 years of age or older, within the standards outlined in current Scouting literature and bulletins. BSA policy does not permit the use of handguns in the Boy Scouting program." I don't see chemical combustion spud guns on the list of items that are permitted to be fired by a boy scout under proper supervision. While the BATF issued a statement in 1995 that such guns are
  8. Sooner or later, we will all quit for one reason or another. As long as the good outweighs the bad, count me in.
  9. Here's too a long life for your pack. Cheers.
  10. That turkey better watch out this year. I plan on gorging myself and sleeping for two days. Last year, I had a case of pneumonia and couldn't eat a thing. Of course, while convalescing, I discovered this forum...a very pleasant diversion.
  11. Huntr, Welcome to the forum. You've done your best...what more can a good cub scouter do.
  12. Annually, we do service at a homeless shelter and log miles at the diabetes walk-a-thon. Six times a year, we do different projects at an estuarine research reserve located within a few miles of our meeting place. Recent projects there - building/monitoring/cleaning owl boxes, install trail bars and stairs, fish seining project, event set-up and tear down, pond rehab, buffer planting, general grounds maintenance, etc, etc. Eagle projects are extras. Perhaps you saw us in the Nov/Dec Scouting magazine.
  13. Welcome to the fun house. Just think you have been all around the world, and now you never have to leave your chair. Looking forward to your contributions.
  14. "I know at our Councils last big event, Paintball target shooting was all the rage, so scouts can target shoot with paintball guns." Sounds like someone owes WWBPD a penny
  15. BoloBoy? OA-Bro? ProudPapa? SlideCarver?
  16. And to think, I've been ignoring this thread thinking it was just another troop committee gone mad. OGE, great idea! Maybe you can circulate a petition (or letter of recommendation) among the forum members to get National to consider adopting. I would be glad to add my electronic signature.
  17. "I really had trouble thinking of something original." So, Brian, lets hook you up with something original and cool. What blows back your hair? Some generic possibilities - BriGuy, PrettyShore, NotShoreAtAll, DarnShore, ErOhSnAiRb(This message has been edited by SemperParatus)
  18. Willkommen! Hope you brought some Frankfurters and Hamburgers to the party with you. The more the merrier.
  19. This is a money-earning project, not a service project. Accordingly, the guidelines on the reverse side of the Unit Money Earning Application should be followed.
  20. I would not say the girl scout program is inferior, just different. Each has its good points and bad. Around my area, there is no big move on the part of teenage girls to quit girl scouts to move to venturing. There may be a nation-wide problem with large numbers of girls ending their girl scouting at age 14-17, but the overwhelming majority of them are not moving on to an alternate scouting program. Your problems with national leadership can easily be fixed by ignoring them. Their impact on the activities of a troop are nominal, at best. If you can't ignore national/council-wi
  21. Science Speaks by Peter Stoner - an hour read that is too good to pass by, especially the probability of Bible prophecy. http://www.geocities.com/stonerdon/science_speaks.html
  22. The BOR is not a retest of the advancement requirements. The Board needs to provide your son with a written statement of the specific reasons for his not being passed. On the next BOR, those items should be the only ones that the BOR needs to address.
  23. It is impossible to know what Ed will post next, and yet, I have belief that he will post something. (This message has been edited by SemperParatus)
  24. Are there any real agnostics out there that can shed some light on the philosophy of agnostic theism, and the differentiation between belief and knowledge, that could lead to an agnostic having a belief in God while not having knowledge of His existence. This is getting interesting...
  25. Michelle, You may want to remind him that while he thinks being an agnostic is cool, becoming an atheiest could be as hot as you know where
