  1. I would say let the boy go. If you are running a boy led program and and the young lad wants to go and get other ideas on what to do, then let him go. The SM knows that he is coming, you know that he is going, and the other leaders do not have an issue with it. Why stop the boy from going to see what works for another troop. Maybe you can try an exchange program. I am sure that your troop does something that the other troop may like. You said that you are one of the more active troops in the area. They do High Adventure and produce Eagles. Sounds like you may also want to sit dow
  2. I am sort of new when it comes to patch trading patches and what ones have what value. I have some patches that are from our Council Camp. Some are old summer camp patches (Past few years) and some are from some of the speciality programs. Some of the speciallity programs are the Duty to God patch and the Leave no Trace Camp Patch. THese patches also have the name of the camp that wil be changed come the first of the year. Meaning there will be no more Camp Bonner and all the new ones wil be Camp Bodie. (Whole different topic there.) How will these patches fall into value
  3. The way that I have always been told campmasters work is like this. THey are there to help the units that are camping on council properties and take the place of the Camp Ranger. This leaves the Camp Ranger free and available to keep doing his normal camp duties. I understood them to be a facilities coordinator for the units/event. Our council uses them, but they need to have another training so they can get some more.
  4. That sounds like a great idea. I may have to plan something like that with my boys or maybe the whole family.
  5. I want to thank a that gave advise and suggestions. To help with what I am being told, here is what I have planned to do. Fill out the transfer forms. They have that right. They are current and I have no issue removing this leader from our roster since he has this attitude. I will wait to see if the pack leadership from his new pack has any other questions. I will only state things that I have seen for a fact. I will mention things that I saw or can prove. That is my best defense both legally and morally. If asked, I wil remember the scout Law and remain the profession
  6. As soon as I read your post I thought back to when I was a staff member and we would sing that at the end ouf our campfires. Of course I could not remember al of the words. I will have to check out those links later.
  7. Paid her to be a DL - Yes we paid her registration. Hoping that would help motivate her. As for what I should do. I will talk to our DE. She can probably give me guidance. I understand slander and lible laws. So I would only speak of things that I saw first hand and not what I heard. He holds the grudge against me for his arrest. I fet what I did was in the right. I will not make excuses for my phone call. I also guess I will leave it at where it is. I am pretty sure that if he does apply for a leader position, they will probably contact me and ask about it. I will
  8. I would find out what it is that your committee wants you to do. What are they looking for. One acct. Different accts for different programs. Or are they looking for something like scout accts. I do not know what kind of document/database programs are you running. If you are using MS office, look around there and see what kind of files they have to offer. Don't try to re-invent the wheel. There is something that should work for you out there.
  9. Just to clarify; The incident that involved the acohol did not happen during a scout activity. It was thought that it would be a good idea that our two families went camping together. I guess that was a bad thought. He is mostly angry with me because I caled the law when he got into a physical altercation with his wife. She dropped the charges a month later. My question is, what do I tell the recieving unit if they ask me about him? I understand that the only thing that I can tell them is what I saw personally. Do I, or do I let it go.
  10. OK first off, I have to let you know that a leader was removed pending legal matters in a domestic case that I witnessed on a camping trip that was not scout related. He also made threatening comments towards me (Yes he was VERY intoxicated) Anyway, the Committee chose to temporariy remove him pending the outcome of his court case. He basicaly dropped off the planet until last week, when called and said that neither he, his wife (who we just paid to be a den leader) or his son would be coming back. That he would be taking his step-son to another pack. The issue is, this is a pac
  11. Try playing the minute game. Equipment: Stop watch, Boys, 2 assistant observers. How to play: Have all the boys stand up. Tell them when to start and have them sit down when they think a minute has passed. make sure that you are able to give some kind of suddle signal to your other obsrevers as to when a minute has passed. let the stop watch go to about 1minute and 20 seconds. See which boys sits down closest to a minute. You will see a bunch of little bobbing heads and silent counting. You will also see a bunch of boys sit down just because the other do. My Cubs love
  12. "Lesson learned: Don't cut back on your equipment because its 'just one night'." This lesson was best learned in the early 90's with some HIGHLY trained soldiers in a little country called Somalia. That was only a 3 - 4 hour mission. Betcha they all wished they brought enough for longer. ALWAYS PLAN for longer. Another question I have is, how did we a kids in the 60's 70's and 80's ever live, doing things like drinking from the creek or the water hose, paying outside ALL day until the street lights come on. It is just amazing that we are alive today.
  13. I have to agree. Look at things in a different light. Make a Chapter Overnighter (I think that they are authorized) and have you meeting for administrative stuff while sitting around the campfire. Then you can also do your ceremonies, and other fun items during the days. Like others have said, think outside the box.
  14. I think that there was once a great explorer that said, I have never been lost. Maybe confused for about three days, but never lost. YOu are right, GPS is only good if you know how it works and how to use it. And you have a map. It does no good knowing your coordinates, if you cannot put that information to use on a map.
  15. for uniform "bling" I may not have a lot to wear but I do look at what I do wear. I anly have one uniform top at this time. On it is my standard patches, TRAINED strip, and a temporary patch from Camp Bonner (Eagle, yes I do have several others that are not getting sewn on) I also wear my Tiger DL award. That is the only knot that I have so far. My CSP is the new one that we have had designed for the 100th anniversary. Yes I did have to move my numbers. The only OA thing that I wear on my uniform right now is the dangle with the arrow on it. I think that it is small en
  16. SOFTY Thats OK, I probably would have done the same. The young ad probably felt SOOO proud and he obviously shows his awards with pride. As for the cost this year. The cheapest thing isted is $10 for the tin of popcorn.
  17. My question is, is there anything out there that is still just for boys. Or just for girls. Do you expect a boy to try something new that he may not be successful at if there is a cute girl around that he may like. He may shy away from the new challange from fear of embarrassment. Of course there will be the older scouts that still give him a hard time, but getting picked on by an older boy scout is a lot different then being laughed at by a girl that you had a crush on. That could be the very reason why that young scout leaves and never returns. I just cant't understand why eve
  18. Although I don't think it will happen, I would like to see a supplement to the Current Academics and Sports Books instead of having to buy a complete new book. I am sure that there has not been too many changes to the others...Just need something that has the new ones with the new requirements.
  19. Thank you DR77 Sorry if I come across harsh and stuff. But I think that there are just too many people trying to get into organizations that were not designed for them. Why can't people just let it be. Instead of trying to move in and take over a set organization, look at what you have, and try to improve it.
  20. I have a daughter that is in the Girl Scouts and I think that their outdoor program is just fine. They have been camping and to camporees. They have also had a basics of canoeing day and other activities. So the idea of the GSUSA not being an outdoors group is stictly Unit based. What would we tell someone who was not happy with the level of activity in their BSA troop. Find a new one that fits your program desires. I have no Problem with Girls in Venturing. Kind of the branch of what we had for exploring. I am fine with the venturing program. I look forward to the day that my dau
  21. Our family camps are coming up soon and I am on the planning Committee for the events. What I am ooking for is some help with some games and activities for the event. I was thinking about having a game midway. Things like a ring toss, baloon pop, clay target breaking with golf balls. Things like that. If I could enlist the help of the scouters here to come up with ideas for the event, all suggestions will be appreciated.
  22. you can always return to scouting. I did so after 12 years. Your education is the most important things that you can get. Depending on what you are majoring in there may be a position as a professional or maybe not. If you talk with your SM and the Committee they will understand. You may be able to find summer work as a camp staff member. I know our council has a unit that is specifically for our Camp staff. They are a venturing crew. That may be something you may want to consider.
  23. Stonewall Jackson Area Council Camp Shennandoah had a fire this morning that resulted in one fatality. The identity of the victim has not been released. So it is not known if it was a scout/scouter/ or responder. Parents have been picking up Scouts today in reponse to todays incident. Not much has been released. There are very few confirmed reports. But the news is trying to keep things current. Please keep all those involved in your prayers. Especially the family of the victim, who ever it may be.
  24. OK I see where you may be comeing from. I have no problem with the BSA doing background checks on my criminal history. Our state (i think like may states) has a sex offenders registry. Criminal HIstory Offender registry And even character references like they actually have on the applications Why are they trying to go overboard. Check the references that are provided. I do not think that my ability to pay my credit cards on time or where I go shopping has anything to do with my ability to lead. I would however agree with repeat checks every two or three years,
  25. My only question is, how does my credit history have any effect on my ability to be a leader. I think this may be going a bit too far
