The rising epidemic of narcissism. Get used to it.

I thought it was Sweden, too, until I did my homework...don't want to be called an ignorant worm, ya know. Got called one anyway. I think Lisa was right...even Obama is saying, "Say, wha? Ya gotta be kiddin me."

Well, the Troll accomplished his mission...hit and run.

From reading this forum for the last several years, and reading Scouting magazine and Boys' Life, I can only come to the conclusion that proper uniforming is MUCH more important to us than it is to the BSA.
-
IF that were the policy, then the standard Boy scout knife (and Cub Scout knife) would be illegal. My philosophy is that, if sold by the BSA (www.scoutstuff.org , search on "knife"), it must be OK.

I asked my dad once, "what will I get if I get all A's"...he response..."you get to NOT be on restriction".

"Away, then, with all those prophets who say to the people of Christ, Peace, peace, and there is no peace!" Martin Luther, Thesis 92 I decided to officially boycott Norway...but found out they don't produce much. Ok, then...no more Lutefisk for me! Who's with me?
-
How come non-Lutherans know so much about Martin Luther? Luther protested (protestant) against the corruption of Rome, such as the selling of tickets to heaven (indulgences). "It is certain that when the penny jingles into the money-box, gain and avarice can be increased, but the result of the intercession of the Church is in the power of God alone."

My immediate response is "MYOB". It's a family matter how a parent raises their kids, as long as there's no abuse. I bought my sons cars when they graduated high school (used, not new). Not sure that's anyone else's business, quite frankly. But I'll see what the others say.

So what arbitrary rules do you enforce?
scoutldr replied to CA_Scouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
adj. Determined by chance, whim, or impulse, and not by necessity, reason, or principle I don't consider any of the above rules to be "arbitrary". They all have reasons. Do the scouts understand the reasons? "No sheath knives". Now, THAT's arbitrary. -
Sounds like the SE got ticked and decided to make examples of them.

Woodrow Wilson, 1919 for founding the League of Nations.

I think more info is needed. Were they just asking for donations (clearly prohibited). Were they wearing uniforms (clearly prohibited unless approved). All unit fund raising has to be approved by the SE.

New Committee Chair - with a issue
scoutldr replied to Capella Rocks's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I would question how the boy got to this point...the question I posed earlier should be a question at EVERY BOR...T-Life. I have little respect for those SM who leave the heavy lifting for the EBOR to do. He needs to have an SM conference at which the BSA Declaration of Religious Principle is discussed, prior to scheduling the EBOR. By the way, as CC, you can call a BOR at any time for any youth, not just for rank advancement. In fact, it's encouraged. -
Technically McCain was born in the Canal Zone, A US Territory until 1979. By Congressional legislation in 1937, all children born there to at least one US citizen are considered citizens (applied retroactively). I don't think Congress can pass laws for Kenya.

"delusional and out of touch" Tres apropos.

New Committee Chair - with a issue
scoutldr replied to Capella Rocks's topic in Open Discussion - Program
The young man needs to be prepared to truthfully answer the question, "tell us about how you've performed your duty to God". The EBOR is sure to ask...and the SM will not be able to explain HIS philosophy of "it's not a big deal to me". -
Call your Council office and ask for the phone number of your Unit Commissioner. If you don't have one, ask for the District Commissioner or District Executive. Explain the situation and ask them to come to a parents' meeting and help you get organized into a "real" Pack. The model of "Pack committee of one" will not work for very long. And I also agree with the husband/wife CM/CC philosophy...there is conflict of interest there. This sounds like a case of a DE who needed a new unit for his job metrics and just put names in slots without worrying about whether the person really wanted the job. That's a formula for failure. "nip this in the bud before I burn out"...good idea. Good luck.

"to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." Not wanting to start a sparring match here...but when and what, exactly, did he do all that before the nomination deadline in January? All I've seen is he's given a few speeches apologizing for us. And there were a record 209 nominations this year (Wikipedia).

"there are SM's out there who do not support OA and will not allow elections in their troop" I've heard that before and don't understand how a District/Council would allow that to happen. OA is an approved part of the BSA program. That would be like an SM unilaterally deciding that he will not approve any scout to take Basketry MB because it serves no purpose. I don't think they should be allowed that authority. If a scout is a registered member of the BSA, he should be able to take advantage of the entire program, not just those parts that the SM agrees with. end rant

The scouts are performing a service project for the CO. They are not fundraising for the CO in uniform(a prohibited activity). I think the key is whether or not the scouts are "paid" for their work at the fair, such as, "if the troop does this, they will get a X% split of the profits". But if the fair raises funds for the mission work of the parish and the parish coincidentally budgets X dollars annually for their youth programs (e.g, not a quid pro quo), then that's ok. Clear as mud?

Den size of 6-8 is recommended. 22 is insane.
-
How do other troops pull it off? They are probably not filling out the "Unit Money Earning Application" and getting permission. And if their annual FOS donation is hefty, everyone looks the other way. Why don't you ask your neighbor...in a friendly, nonthreatening way..."how do you guys get Council permission to do that?" Since it's a "parents club" (are they the CO of the troop?), they probably don't think they are bound by BSA policy.

Uh...that's one hour per week PER SCOUT...

"BSA insurance will cover you only if you travel in Class A uniforms" (false)
