  1. Could it be that new DE's are being trained "You can't wait for the volunteers to get around to doing things...it needs to be done, and if you want to keep your jobs, you must do it yourself." I see a pattern here.
  2. "Scouting Rounds a Guy Out"...1965 was a rough year for me!
  3. The visual I had is of a bunch of old men (and women!) sitting around the pot bellied stove in the old hardware store. No topic was too good to spark a good argument. And no matter what you say, someone will be happy to argue the other side, with vigor! And most of it is unimportant in the grand scheme of things.
  4. The best practice for any donation of materials is to just describe the donation , e.g., "three used toner cartridges, model XXXX". It's between the donor and the IRS to determine the value of the deduction, and there are strict rules for doing so.
  5. Raffles are considered "games of chance" and are not permitted as unit fundraisers.
  6. This is listed in the Scouter.com directory: Cub Scout Pack 609 Malden, Massachusetts Boston Minuteman Council Web Page Address None on file E-Mail Address BRW098@aol.com Site/Unit Offers Meeting Date/Time Monday's at 6:30 p.m. Meeting Place Lillian Road
  7. I would prefer to see the pocketknife presented at the one-year mark...at the Court of Honor where they receive their First Class badge, and AFTER they have earned their Totin'Chip.
  8. I joined an Explorer Post in 1968. I had been elected to OA as a Boy Scout so I continued my activity in the OA. The other Explorers in the Post had never been Scouts, but they were OA members. My Post Advisor held the Vigil Honor and Silver Beaver. We participated in more OA Lodge events than we did district or council events and had a blast. The Post became co-ed in 1970, when several Senior Girl Scouts joined. Yes, there were relationships and "other activity". Things were never the same.

I don't disagree, Bob. But that's not what it says. It says "troop". I can't help but think that the Bubbas in Irving read the things we argue about and laugh their fool butts off! Does it really matter? Whatever the troop decides to do is fine with me, as long as the boys have ownership of the process and are not dictated by adults.

It says "the Troop decides by a vote"...I read that to mean that all youth members get a vote...not just the PLC.
  11. I had two of the most loving, caring parents one could ask for. They loved me enough to know when to let go and let me grow up and take care of myself. That's a problem I see with today's kids...they are "growing up" at a much later age...if at all.
  12. She was turned into a pillar of Iodine????? Man, I missed that translation!
  13. Myron Floren passed on to that great bandstand in the sky on July 23. It was a day of mourning in my house. Thank you-a boys-a! Adios, au revoir, auf wiedersehen! Good night!
  14. OGE said, "I am not sure about your area, but the Venture Program struggles to establish its own identity and having Ventures in the OA only blurs the line more. Of course dual registered boys can be members, in their troop." So I take this to mean that Arrowmen who join a Venture Crew, but do not maintain dual registration, are no longer members of the OA and should no longer participate?
  15. Don't you mean "the lads whom I serve"?
  16. Sorry, SP, I made a bad assumption, but from your post, it sounded like it was a big surprise that you were even considered a "silver looper". HMMMM. I need to find a new SM soon for our unit, maybe I'll just pick one and start listing his name on everything and he'll just start showing up and doing the job. Sounds like it works for your DE.
  17. Being morally straight and physically strong do not preclude the responsible use of alcohol...in adults. The young man is willfully breaking the law. His parents are condoning it, and are therefore guilty of contributing to the delinquency of a minor or worse. I would say he is lacking in Scout Spirit, and for Eagle, the bar should be very high. See my other posts about "fatal flaws" that should prevent the awarding of the Eagle.
  18. In a troop where no one misbehaves, the latrines must get really funky! I would be sure to recruit at least one or two bad kids so that the unpleasant work gets done.
  19. Something doesnt' sound quite right. I am also a DMAL, which is what all District Committee members are registered as who are not the District Chairman, District Commissioner, etc. Those members also usually have a responsibility for a "sub" committee such as Training, Membership, Finance, Program, Camping Promotion, Advancement, etc. As I said, it is a registered position, and at least in our Council, we have to resubmit Adult applications every year and sign them, even though we also may be registered in a unit. As such, I get two membership cards, one for the DMAL position and one for my unit position. Not sure how you can be registered as a DMAL and not know about it. Doesn't anyone wonder why you don't show up for District Committee meetings? BTW, all CORs are also ex officio voting members of the District Committee.
  20. All members holding a registered District position (except of course specific positions such as District Chairman, District Commish), wear the "District Committee" patch in position 2, directly under the CSP, where the unit numerals would usually go. They do NOT wear unit numerals. Wear silver loops.
  21. I have 30 years' experience in the Occupational Safety and Health field. I can tell you that if "common sense" were common, I would be out of a job. Maturity and common sense have nothing to do with it. That's why there are Federal laws governing safety rules on the job. Are you sure that the sub-roof system is stable and will hold the weight of multiple people? Will you have fall-protection harness systems in place (which are very expensive)? Will you erect warning barriers around the perimeter to prevent people from walking off the side (very common)? If a scout falls and breaks his back, are you willing to give up most of your future earnings? Liability waivers are generally worthless if there is negligence involved. You need to think real hard about this. Why not have a fund raiser and then pay professionals to do the job who have the proper experience and equipment?
  22. If the church wants to have a fundraiser to buy you a trailer, that's fine, and the donations to the church will be deductible. But units are prohibited from seeking cash donations. A unit fundraising application must be filed with your council, and approved by your SE. The rules for fundraising are printed on it. Sorry to be a wet blanket. That's what popcorn sales and car washes are for. Then, once the trailer is purchased, you have to figure out how to register it for license and insurance. Since the Troop is not a legal entity, is your CO willing to "own" the trailer on paper?
  23. Good question. I, too, cannot find a reference, however my "spidey safety sense" says "BAD IDEA". If a monkey bridge cannot be more than 5 feet off the ground, and any other "climbing" requires training and safety equipment, I think your answer can be extrapolated from that. Were it me, I would say "adults only" working at heights, with scouts performing support work on the ground. And the adults should be following all OSHA regulations (while they don't technically apply to volunteers, they are still a good idea). Fall protection devices, roof edge guards, etc.
  24. I guess I'm just lucky I made it to this age without a "lifeline." I made it all through Scouts without having to call Mom once, and I'm still alive. Thank God for miracles.
  25. I did not choose to be fat. I just am. I was fat coming out of the womb, I was the fattest kid in my grade school class, and I am still fat at age 50. I eat a balanced diet and in no more quantity than those around me. I do not have six Whoppers at a sitting. In fact, I don't have them at all. I have dieted, exercised and prayed for deliverance from my affliction, since it causes me to violate the Scout Oath (physically fit) and be a poor "role model", although I am generally a good person otherwise. I tried the new "diet drugs" and they damn near killed me. I have concluded that being fat is in my genes, just like diabetes, high cholesterol, skin color, and high blood pressure are in some other people. I hope I don't get drummed out of Scouting and burn in eternal damnation because of it.
