  1. For the good of the order, atlatl is a prohibited activity. You can reference Appendix 8 of the Shooting Sports manual. Spears.
  2. Anyone actually read the Camporee Guide? https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/outdoor program/pdf/430-001.pdf Especially this part: A camporee starts with the recognition that a patrol is the basic camping unit. The patrol demonstrates its very best camping techniques and shares its experiences with other patrols. The camporee involves the type of equipment that can be carried in a pack by boys and can be set up entirely by boys, allowing them to be completely self-sufficient for a self-reliant experience over a period of two or three days.
  3. https://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2018/12/05/scouts-bsa-brand-guidance I'd suggest clicking thru all the resources included. You should have also gotten a link to this via Scouting Wire if your email is up to date and you are a BSA volunteer.
  4. @Eagle94-A1 There was not such a rule. Recommended, sure, required no. I happen to know the guy that writes those. Rumor, BS, folklore, well intended volunteers pushing a WFA agenda all could be the source, but not the BSA this time..... ECSI and the American Red Cross both have agreements with the BSA to facilitate instructor development and capacity locally. https://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/training/ The American Camp Association recognizes several other nationwide providers like SOLO and NOLS who have courses that meet their standards. Several BSA camps includ
  5. "They" never had such a rule......Are you confusing this with when the H/W chart on the AHMR applies? https://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/ahmr/medical-formfaqs/
  6. Would be interested in who this forum thinks could fill the role that NRA Instructors, TC's and RSO / CRSO's provide to the shooting sports?
  7. https://www.scouting.org/outdoor-programs/shooting-sports/cub-scout-shooting-sports/ Cub Scouts shooting BB guns use a BB Gun Rangemaster, that particular training is done locally and is BSA developed training for a specific purpose. Not an NRA program.
  8. Communicable diseases are a real risk, there are some incident reviews that are in the works but are not ready for publication. The American Camp Association also has some great resources. https://www.acacamps.org/staff-professionals/core-competencies/health-wellness/communicable-diseases-infestations
  9. Might suggest review of this: https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/680-103(18)_Prev_of_CommunicableDiseases.pdf
  10. I'm sorry, did you read the reference / source material? OP asked about a private online forum set up for PLC use and connected to the Troop. Seems pretty clear (it's not a hypothetical) that this was set up and being done in the name of Scouting. From the Scouting wire that outlines not only why but the risks: "..To help ensure that all communication on social media channels remains positive and safe, these channels must be public, and all communication on or through them must be public. This enables administrators to monitor all communication and help ensure there is no in
  11. https://scoutingwire.org/marketing-and-membership-hub/social-media/social-media-guidelines/ The private online situation should cause pause, and does not meet Scouting's Barriers to Abuse. https://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/gss/gss01/#a
  12. Okay, so did you read the FAQ's on that topic? Disagreement with the answer doesn't mean it's incorrect. (emphasis added below) Q: Why is a female adult 21 years of age or over required whenever female youth are present, but not the other way around? A. The requirement to ensure that a registered female adult is present at activities serving girls is not dissimilar to policies we’ve enacted in the past for Venturing when male and female adult leaders were required for certain co-ed activities. At this time, we believe that these are the best, most appropriate measures for our mov
  13. You get to chose your response. Seems a little over the top on a forum. Perhaps look at the fact you have a clear example where a young lady is being put into a situation where she is the lone female and that is a risk that has been identified and deemed unacceptable. The situation that shouldn't happen with Scouting's Barriers to Abuse. The link to the Barriers to Abuse in case you missed it.....https://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/gss/gss01/#a A few FAQ's: https://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/yp-faqs/ What Family Scouting is supposed to be: https://ww

  15. https://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/gss/gss01/ is the most up to date location moving forward for the Barriers to Abuse. A one source of truth if you will. The "72 hours rule" is All adults accompanying a Scouting unit who are present at the activity for 72 total hours or more must be registered as leaders. The 72 hours need not be consecutive." The intent of this policy is to protect participants - both youth and adults - and maintain a Safe Scouting environment. It is event centric. Examples of where this applies today in Scouting are resident camps, treks, long te
  16. Ever consider how would this look to parents of youth who might want to join scouting if it was plastered as a headline? It isn't 1954 anymore. Wow, just wow...
  17. Came across this article, posting in issues and politics. Just wondering what the group thinks about it? https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/14/nyregion/kaaterskill-falls-catskills-deaths-instagram.html?action=click&module=Editors Picks&pgtype=Homepage RichardB
  18. Knowing how to swim is integral to advancement, it is also about providing a safe aquatics environment. Yes, you should say something, kids are being put at risk if they are doing other aquatics activities without knowing their abilities. A safety moment on why it's important to do aquatics in Scouting following safety afloat and safe swim defense: https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/680-055(17)_Aquatics_WEB.pdf Incidents that really happened: Swimming- https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/680-056.pdf Boating and Paddling - htt
  19. It is actually an insert pull out of the printed GTSS and has been for over a decade. It and the camping age appropriate guidelines were assigned separate BIN #’s. That’s really the difference. All things shooting sports including MGA. https://www.scouting.org/outdoor-programs/shooting-sports/ Please let me know what B.B. guns you were using for tigers? Mfg, make and model details needed.
  20. Just curious, since this is a pack camping experience, has someone in the pack taken BALOO? Camping on a island? Has the council reviewed this location as appropriate for your campout? It would seem that would be a little bit outside the box for the Cub Program. Big difference between what you may have experienced in Scouting and the actual Cub Scout program of today. These are not new requirements, they have been around for over 80 years. https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/680-055(17)_Aquatics_WEB.pdf
  21. @TAHAWK and @ Kryten: So are you all saying the adults you currently have supervising units wouldn't know / cannot figure out how to provide adult supervision of a patrol activity without interfering? Help me understand. How are they doing this now for your unit activities? Are you saying that 80% of patrol activities now are conducted without adult supervision? @Kryten - what would lead the patrols to believe they couldn't be trusted? How did that discussion go exactly?
  22. Attention @tahawk The patrol method hasn't changed. Supervision requirements by adults of that patrol activity has. You can find the latest here: https://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/gss/gss01/#a RichardB
  23. That would be Voice of Scouting surveys. They go out monthly as well.
  24. Couple of questions for deliberation: How many of you that want to be "in the know" are signed up for a weekly Scoutingwire feed? https://scoutingwire.org/ Are you promoting that? Does you council have a newsletter? Do you get that? Any articles in there on changes? Do you get Scouting Magazine 6 times a year? Do you read it? Do you subscribe to Bryan's Blog? Do you really want an email and a dead tree letter? @Hawkwin Richard Bonus Question: did you know the Program Hazard Analysis http://scouting.org/filestore/pdf/680-009.pdf narrative
