Sabattis Adventure Camp Going, Going, ....
RememberSchiff replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Council Relations
Update Nov, 2021: GONE "The Patriots’ Path Council — which includes 11,000 Scouts in Morris, Somerset, Sussex, Union and parts of Middlesex County — told its members earlier this month that it entered into a contract to sell Sabattis Adventure Camp, its beloved campground in the Adirondack Mountains. ... A previous proposal to sell Sabattis Adventure Camp in 2017 was delayed by the Boy Scout council after nearly 2,000 people signed a petition to save the camp. ... The sale of the camp will help Patriots’ Path Council pay a portion of the $3.7 million the council is expected to contribute to the bankruptcy settlement, officials said. Discussions are still underway to decide how the council will pay the remainder of the money." https://www.nj.com/news/2021/11/2-nj-boy-scout-councils-selling-camps-to-pay-for-sexual-abuse-settlements.html -
I was a Courier Post paperboy which, at the time, published Mon-Sat afternoon editions. Weather permitting, I delivered by bike, As I peddled past a house, I side-armed a folded newspaper like a boomerang from the street to front porch. The Philly papers and of course the Sunday editions were often too thick to throw. Too thick because of their greater sports coverage and classifieds sections (General, Technical, Professional, Medical, Part-Time) covering the Delaware Valley. Getting a Bulletin or Inquirer route was harder than getting a NYC taxi medallion. Occasionally I subbed on weekends for friends with Bulletin or Inquirer routes. I could make more money than I did with Courier all week, but what - you had to assemble (insert comics and ads) the Sunday paper at the supervised host location before heading out for delivery. Oh the weight, it really helped to have Mom or Dad drive the route. Great learning experience having a paper route, but that was back in the day. Returning to OP, G2SS. We need to journey back to teaching and trusting, If high schools teach students the safe use of power tools so can we. In 2022, lets educate scouts in the safe operation of dremels, drill presses, scroll saws...check some boxes in Boy Scouts column on SAFE Project Use Chart. I find this reference useful https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/docs/2004-101/pdfs/safe.pdf My $0.02,

Wow, Buck Buck on Wikipedia who would have thought. Remember when we got our news from The Philadelphia Inquirer? "It was almost a universal thing in Philadelphia," said Davidson, 71, who has not yet brought his deadbox to market. "I feel bad for new people moving to Philadelphia who don't know a lot of these traditions. They know about the Mummers Parade or the light show at Wanamakers. But the day-to-day community in Philadelphia evolved around street games and hanging out on rowhouse streets... If nobody fell off, that was considered a very good thing," said Rubin, who as a child never thought this ordeal strange or dangerous. "It was group therapy at the time." https://www.inquirer.com/philly/news/philly-pimpleball-stickball-wallball-wireball-buckbuck-street-games-20181107.html

"The BSA hopes to start a Family Unit in the community (Alexandria, MN), which would allow both boys and girls in grades K-5 to participate in scouting. Currently the closest Family Unit is in Carlos/Miltona." https://www.echopress.com/news/7290287-Boy-Scouts-hoping-to-establish-Family-Unit-in-Alexandria

Games like viruses evolve variants. Back in the day, the "Buck Buck" we played (in South Jersey) had Team One form a chain of interlocked bent over players (bucks). First bent over with arms around a tree and second player's head locked between legs. Second player had third player's head locked between his legs and so on. Team Two formed a line of standing bucks. The first would run "Buck-Buck #1" and leap on the backs of the Team TWO and try to hold on. Buck-Buck #2 followed and so on. The goal was to break Team One chain by bringing it down. Selecting players based on their strength was key for Team One and for distance leaping ability for Team Two. If Team One held all Team One player who held on, Team One won that round. If Team One collapsed under the Team Two barrage, Team Two won the round. At camporees, after losing to Troop 154 in official patrol competitions on Saturday, we rebounded in unofficial patrol competitions of questionable safety that night - Buck-Buck, knife throwing, snipe hunt. Scoutmasters were at CrackerBarrel playing poker...late. Earlier in this topic, the rules of Gaga were explained, which are different from the game variant I have seen here which resembles arena dodgeball. My $0.02,

The Twin Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America is warning people about a potential scam surrounding the selling of cookies According to a press release issued by the Twin Valley Council, on Monday, Nov. 22, a member of the Austin community was contacted by some teens pretending to be Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts selling cookies. The teens were not wearing any sort of Scouting uniform and were asking citizens to purchase cookies and collecting payment and the citizen’s phone number and were going to call once the cookies were in. “This is a scam,” said Erik Karre, district director for the Twin Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America. “We do have some Scouts who have not yet have a uniform, but our local Scouts in the area are not engaged in any fundraising efforts at this time and certainly do not sell cookies. Our primary fundraiser this time of year is selling Trails End popcorn, which just wrapped up and we will be selling flowers in the spring.” According to Karre, the citizen didn’t fall for the scam, and so there has been no police involvement as of yet. But the Boy Scouts warn, if citizens are contacted by anyone claiming to be a Cub Scout or Boy Scout selling cookies, do not purchase them. Citizens are encouraged to contact local law enforcement if they have been solicited. https://www.austindailyherald.com/2021/11/boy-scouts-warn-of-local-scam-involving-cookie-sales/

Out of curiosity, I searched for "boy scouts" and "Allan Sherman". The search returned this link with 1956 camp letters from Scout Harlan who attended Camp Lenape, BSA in (Medford Lakes) Burlington County, NJ. My old troop often camped at Camp Lenape...back in the day. -

Chapter 11 Announced - Part 6 - Plan 5.0/TCC Plan TBD

IMHO. Easier to seal a document than redact. During the course of this case, requests for sealing court proceedings appear automatically granted (good luck getting the minutes of hearings). And other anticipated bench rulings have been deferred to continued mediation. Despite his compensation, I would not be surprised if mediator Paul Finn resigned due to frustration with work load. Interesting article about John Zane 84 who is celebrating 75 years as a Boy Scout and he’s writing a book about it - titled “Ever a Scout,” Jonathan Glassman, Boy Scouts of America District Director for Connecticut Yankee Council, said there’s no official label that says Zane has been in scouting longer than anyone else in the Connecticut Yankee Council, but he said Zane is “always the last man standing,” when they have longtime scouts stand up at the annual dinner, asking them to be seated in five-year increments. Some topic-related quotes: “I hate to think it’s just a history book without inspiration to the younger scouts,” he said. “It (Scouting) kept a lot of kids off the street, kept them physically active, intellectually. Boys say their teachers would ask, ‘Where do you learn this stuff?’ The Boy Scouts, of course.” 👍 He recalls the value of mentors on many occasions, including in earning the bird study badge . Zane needed to identify 35 birds and couldn’t find the last one - the yellow-bellied sap sucker. One of mentors at camp said, “The woods are full of them.” It would turn out he was seeing them, but thought it was a cardinal, as they looked similar. https://www.nhregister.com/news/article/Ever-a-Scout-North-Branford-man-celebrates-16630350.php
