After tomorrow I am hoping all the hype dies down
RememberSchiff replied to mashmaster's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Ok then. Let's stay on topic - Girls are joining the re-branded Scouts, BSA today and we hope the hoopla soon settles so all can all get back to our scouting program in our respective units. Locally, IMO the cold weather may be keeping new scouts and adult leaders away until spring. I await some official word from Punxsatawney Phil tomorrow. Update: Phil predicted there will NOT be 6 more weeks of this. -
Moved by OP request.

Eagle Scout Extension for new 2019 Scouts
RememberSchiff replied to scotteg83's topic in Issues & Politics
So a procrastinating Scout with 0-20 months to go before he turns 18 could drop out and then join the new rebranded Scouts BSA and have 22 months to complete Eagle? -
As stated in "Members can "report" a topic or response which does not follow the Scout Oath and Law, by using the "Report Post" feature in the upper right corner of the response." You did not report your complaint to moderators who apparently saw no more than the usual back and forth. Which topic(s) was this in? @MattR @desertrat @NJCubScouter @LeCastor

For myself, I was hoping for an exemption such as "asthma under control with no attack in x years".... Anyway, here is where I was coming from https://www.scouting.org/outdoor-programs/aquatics/scuba-bsa/ Scuba diving is prohibited for the following conditions: Use of medication to control seizures or seizure occurrence within the past five years Use of insulin to control diabetes History of asthma or RAD unless resolution confirmed by methacholine testing (People who have been asymptomatic and medication free for the previous five years are exempt from the methacholine testing requirements.)

I believe asthma is a disqualifier for any BSA SCUBA.

Per WSJ -BSA may declare bankruptcy

On me. I knew about this so I did not proofread article, apparently the editor of that paper did not either. -
Per WSJ -BSA may declare bankruptcy
RememberSchiff replied to Eagle1993's topic in Issues & Politics
The Boy Scouts of America, or BSA, announced in 2016 that it was closing its museum next to the national office in Irving, Texas, and moving it to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. The BSA decided not to move its fine arts collection to the National Scouting Museum at Philmont because that facility was not equipped with the security, climate controls and other necessities for fine art preservation. The collection includes about 350 pieces, nearly all of which are Boy Scout-related, but the main attraction is the 66 works by Rockwell, the renowned artist and illustrator. The BSA was one of Rockwell’s first employers, hiring him to create pen and ink drawing for its “Hike Book” in 1912. He produced scout images for Boys Life and the Saturday Evening Post as well as paintings used for the Boy Scout calendars issued by Brown and Bigelow. The BSA owns the largest collection of Rockwell works outside of the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Mass. This article is much clear about what is going on, regarding exhibit, appraisal, and possible sale. Sorry for confusion. http://www.tribtoday.com/news/local-news/2019/01/130m-art-at-risk/ -

The BSA may sell parts of its art collection, for example, 66 original works by Norman Rockwell which had been appraised at $130 million. http://www.tribtoday.com/news/local-news/2019/01/donor-questions-butler-boards-decision-on-boy-scouts-collection/ Update: as others noted above link is confusing. Link below is clearer. http://www.tribtoday.com/news/local-news/2019/01/130m-art-at-risk/ -
From the Uniform Inspection sheet "All troop members must wear the headgear chosen by vote of the troop/team." But if your troop has not chosen any headgear, and many do not, then you can officially wear what you want. I wear my Red Sox cap.

In this case, just an optional activity for older scouts with a neighboring girls camp. I do not know of another scout camp which does this. As to your point, with female scouts coming to camp, maybe these dances will be banned. Calling Kevin Bacon...

Depends on what programs and conveniences interest your unit. We have camped at all three but have only attended a week of summer camp at Wanocksett (NH). Wanocksett has more elbow room, suffers less from suburban sprawl, as it is adjacent to Mt. Monadnock State Park. Tues night, there is a hike up Mt. Monadnock. I believe the lake is the largest of the three camp lakes. A new boat house and new boats. Some new bathrooms have been built. Rifle program does not suffer from MA laws. My understanding, Wanocksett still does not run a parallel Cub Scout camp as the other two do., but it does have a dance with neighboring girl camp. On Sat, after camp go to Kimball's Ice Cream in Jaffery and reward yourself. Resolute had more sports facilities - basketball court, GaGA pit,... Treasure Valley has solar panels throughout camp. I think that was a WPI grad project and again my impression it may have more STEM programming. The Mid-State trail is accessible from Treasure Valley, hike north to (Barre Falls Dam ) Army Corp of Engineers. Cell phone, internet? I have used my cell (Verizon) at all three. Not sure about bikes at these three camps. My $0.02,

I have been surprised by the number of scouts who do not own a bike and if they do, they have out-grown their bike. With renting , you will likely be required to rent a helmet too. All should have helmets. And then there are the logistics of transporting bikes. It can work at the unit level say for a trip to Nantucket or Acadia, but the activity does not scale well. My $0.02

"Police: Suspects charged in bomb plot were former Boy Scouts"

I hope the student who saw something and said something to police was a scout, but I doubt we will ever know. My $0.02, -
What merit badges should a first-year scout do at summer camp?
RememberSchiff replied to mrkstvns's topic in Summer Camp
@shortridge , would that more parents thought that way.
