  1. SSS, I can live with the construct of specific statements to cross-connect Scouting and the (Christian)(Jewish)(Islamic)(X) faith depending on the desire of the chartered partner. I've been in an OA service where the Chaplain did intermingle books of faith beyond OT/NT. One word: Anathema.
  2. Vicki, good comments in the post I spun this off from. We've been through this before on several threads. I'm a former youth Arrowman (meaning I am now well beyond my 21st year), an Honorary (Adult entry) Warrior in the Tribe of Mic-o-Say, and a member of the National Lutheran Association on Scouting. Let me walk the dog: - Wisconsin Evangelican Lutheran Synod: This body believes neither BSA or GSUSA are compatible with their interpretation of Christian faith: http://www.wels.org/news-events/forward-in-christ/january-1996/religious-principles-boy-scouts - Evangelical Lutheran Synod: I just called their President. The organizational church is in fellowship with Wisconsin. They discourage parishes from being Chartered Partners. Individuals in parishes might be members, but it sounded like Pastors have a duty to work patiently with these folks to show them their error in the Lord. - Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod: There is a memorandum of mutual support in place: http://www.philmontscoutranch.org/filestore/pdf/lutheran_misso_synod.pdf - Evangelical Lutheran Church in America: Openly embraces Scouting. http://www.elca.org/Growing-In-Faith/Ministry/Youth-Ministry/Resources/Links.aspx#Scouting%20and%20civic%20youth%20serving%20organizations I've told the tale before. She who was once my bride tried to claim OA and the Tribe were secret societies in the construct of Masonic. Several fellow men of my parish came to mine and my sons' defense. Had this been so, I could have been under Matthew 18 church disciple faster than I can say the Apostle's Creed. I've also said elsewhere that I must respect anothers' religious beliefs. I do not, though, have to worship in anothers' tradition. Thankfully, I just googled Scouts' Own Service, and that abomination that tried to make the Scout Law into articles of faith seems to be finally gone from the interwebs.(This message has been edited by John-in-KC)
  3. Easy to be multipled in a Scout Troop and any number of Venturing Crews. Easy to be multipled in just any number of Venturing Crews (to include Sea Scout Ships). I'd like to see the filestore document on multiples in Troops. Haven't seen that hat trick actually work.
  4. I'm going to say it depends. If you're in a fairly rural Council, and the MB catalog is not readily available within 100 miles of the Scouts' home, then yes, let's offer them at Camp. OTOH, if you're in a city, and each District has most of the catalog, then dial back at Scout Camp ... let the kids have fun doing things they can't do back home. It's hard to get day after day of small craft instruction, so boating and canoeing make sense. It's really difficult anymore to get on a safe range, so the shooting sports should be done at camp. First Aid? Do it in the city. Cooking? Make it Eagle Required Once Again!! :-) My 0.01 (adjusted for inflation)
  5. Your chartered partner should be the one providing the 501C3 cover. If they are a for-profit business, let them provide your Treasurer guidance on how they want income managed. It's their problem, they are the Chartered Partner
  6. GET THE BOYS INVOLVED IN THE DECISIONMAKING It's their Troop. This is something the SM needs to mentor with the SPL and PLs. Emphasize the Journey, not the destination. Allow the youth to wander and explore the trail. At your size, two different campouts a month, with patrols choosing which one they attend, might not be a bad idea.
  7. That and TSA Kansas City is even worse than most TSAs. Our fairy-god senators back in 2002 got us to be the "privatization" experiment. KCI has First Line Security, Inc... http://www.firstlinets.com/ Trust me ... they make TSA seem competent.
  8. ... fill out a form ... Oh, Good God. What a marvelous way to suck the oxygen right out of the young Scout contmeplating leadership. How about asking the youth who want to lead to have a friendly Scoutmaster Conference with Mr SM, so he can mentor the youth? It's part of his volunteer duties, after all...
  9. BTW, here's a synopsis of how bad the 8th Edition was: http://www.troop97.net/bshb_ed8.htm
  10. Ilford, Why in the HAIL would you want to bring back something so horrible as the 1972 Boy Scout Program? IT WAS AN ABSOLUTE UNMITIGATED DISASTER!!! (he shouts) Urban Scouting was a disaster. If you're going to look to the past for program, drop back to the 1959 Boy Scout handbook, or go look at kudu's website for ideas. DING DONG THE BELT LOOPS ARE DEAD!!! THE BELT LOOPS ARE DEAD!!! THE BELT LOOPS ARE DEAD!!!
  11. TCD, NO. The young man is in the service of the Council, through the Camps' hiring procedures. In the Council I serve, CITs receive contracts. They're for a week, they're for room/board only, but they are contracts. The proper reporting path is to his Lodge Director, Program Director, or Camp Director ... whoever he feels most comfortable in making the report. At the same time, now that T3 is aware of it, his call should be to the Camp Director and the COR. COR should be contacting the Chairman of the Council Camping Committee, and asking what's going on.
  12. SS, Contact your DE. Ask for a business meeting with the Council Professional responsible for special needs. If there is not a committee of volunteers, then all the duties devolve onto a Professional. If you get the runaround, go to your Council website, find the President of your Council, and ask your COR to have a businesslike chat with him. The Charter Agreement says that the local Council will provide the resources you need. It's their side of the bargain.
  13. Having read through this, and looking at what Lisa said in both her posts... Shortridge pretty well said it for me, though that conversation would happen the first time the young man had drugs with him at a campout. The only things I'd recommend additionally are Mr SM have a private conversation with the CC (CC/SM need to have each others back) as well as the IH and COR (they are the franchisee of record for the unit, their reputation and values are on the line too). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm not a believer in "Scouts" and "Not Scouts." Our role is to instill an ethic in these young people, and hopefully it sticks lifelong. How do we define Scout Spirit? Live the Oath and Law in the young persons' daily life. If it happens away from the unit, sooner or later it will come inside the unit
  14. SS, I hope you have are working with your District and Council special needs committees. I'd also hope you are talking with your District Advancement Chair. He/she should have a very good idea of the MB Counselors in your district, and their strengths/weaknesses. If you're not, contact your unit or district commissioner. This is a case where you want the best "people persons" you can find.
  15. It depends on what the Counselor is willing to accept. It really is that simple. If Mr SM does not like what Mr Counselor chooses to accept/reject, he's got a point of control: He does not assign that MBC to any more Scouts. As to mom's question, at my first visit with the Scout, I'm going to tell him the clock for taking care of Fido winds today. (This message has been edited by John-in-Kc)
  16. A CUB SCOUT wears as described: http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/34635.pdf "The Arrow of Light Award is worn centered below the pocket of the tan shirt or centered at the top of the pocket flap of the navy blue or tan shirt." A BOY SCOUT wears it low. http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/34283.pdf A SCOUTER wears the green/red knot. http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/34048.pdf OK? OK.
  17. My two cents: Mom, Dad (or surrogates), SM, CC, and COR need to have a friendly, yet decidedly serious conversation. If all the grownups can get on one sheet of music, then the boy, the SPL, and his PL join them. Everyone, family, adult leadership, and youth leadership, have to have skin in this game. If all work together, this can be a life changer
  18. Can someone do an IP compare to confirm bnelon is not Bob White? This is a franchised youth serving educational supplement, not One of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
  19. In my Council, if you go to camp, you become a Scouter. Period.
  20. My two cents: Train your OATR to be the first line of defense about the mystery of the Order. Then, back him up. When non-Scouter Mommy/Daddy get obstinate, let the TR give him/her an adult leader app, and invite them to camp the 15 days and nights. After that, let the TR send them to either the Chapter Chief or the Chapter Adviser for the second line. Don't be bureaucratic, but let each layer work.
  21. Why aren't you asking this question to your PLC? Sometimes, WDYPLS--WDYSPLS are more important for the adults than they are for the kids...
  22. Let's cut to the chase: the OP needs to have a business meeting with the Council Professional designated the adviser to the Council Advancement Committe and with the volunteer Chairman of same. They have the resources. Mote than that, if they do not support this, it will not happen. There is the rare exception to the rule, but it takes having an ally at court.
  23. Does the Internet advancement module of ScoutNet even have a cross check function for names of the other two signatures of a BOR? Lots of pole vaulting over mouse turds on this one... I'd be a lot more interested that the BOR asked good, non re-testing the material questions
  24. First, Scouting good practices are build a small "revolving" fund for fear wear and tear replacements. Tents and dining flies wear out. Lanterns have globes broken through no fault. Brass fittings strip. A prudent troop, working with its chartered partner, has a reserve. Patrol quartermasters, working with the Troop quartermaster(s) help keep stuff in good repair. Clean and usable going out, ditto coming back. In a good Troop with a good Patrol method, the committeeman charged with property stewardship is just a resource point for the youth... He can have LOTS of coffee To the OP's question, I'd drop the question of a per-head fee or a fundraiser on the PLC. Help them learn a lesson that adults do manage badly. See how they want to get out of the hole , AND THEN GIVE THEM TOOLS TO DO SO. If Mr CC does not want to play, well, the SM also has a direct line to the COR. It's time for it to be used, and the message is the CC is not supporting the program. In my book, that is enough to thank him for his past service and to tell him he wll not be rechartering.(This message has been edited by John-in-kc)
  25. Actually, B, there are BOR polizei: He or she is the District Guest when the Council allows unit BORs for Eagle Scout ;-)
