Only comment as the Dad of a tubist, who got to spend 1000s of dollars to rework a badly developed embouchure... Talk with the boys clarinet teacher. Make sure the brass embouchure work is not going to goof up the reed embouchure!

Gates Quote From The 2014 National Annual Meeting
John-in-KC replied to robert12's topic in Issues & Politics
Stosh nailed it. His words were prescient. At the same time, multiple realities hit. He made a judgment call. He's made a few of them, many involving life and death decisions. MODERATOR'S NOTE: FOLLOW THE SCOUT LAW, FOLKS. Friendly Courteous Kind -
Where Do You Get Your Maps For Orienteering Courses
John-in-KC replied to joesport5's topic in Open Discussion - Program
There are Military Grid Reference System tickmarks on 1:24K maps to set up grids. MGRS is a simplification of UTM. The 52S is the gridzone, LB is the 100 kilometer grid square. -
Remember this is Boy Scout and Venturer only (no Webelos) per G2SS, and to comply with the Sweet 16 of BSA Safety! Have fun! http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/Sweet16.aspx

WAKWIB, who I know in real life, helps us get to a valid point. Scouter99 in this case does too. At some point, someone will sue a chartered partner over local option. BSA, as it must under the charter agreement, will defend. Sooner or later, the right case, state and judge will find for the plaintiff, and BSA will be out (self-insured for the 1st Million remember?) a mil. With that 1st precedent, some other plaintiff will win in their jurisdiction. BSA will be out another mil, or perhaps more. At that point, the folks in Irving will cut their losses (see also G2SS restrictions), and end the faith based exception. I give this five years to happen...

Matt, that is an anecdotal observation from Kansas City.

When in doubt, google. Lots of information available: BSA Webpage on Ineligible Volunteer Files BSA President Perry Statement on Ineligible Volunteers Units get to decide on volunteers, but so does National. If National decides a volunteer is ineligible, he can observe only as a parent. If you let him be a volunteer in your unit, and something happens, BSA will defend the chartered partner, but I'd bet dollars to donuts the Council will seek a new chartered partner for the unit in the coming year.

What SSScout said. BSA has a monthly program theme for each element of the program. Use that. For Cubs, highlight Sports and Activities program. For Weebs, highlight a pin. For Boy Scouts, highlight a merit badge. For Venturers, highlight a college. If you dovetail those against the Scouting theme...

From my experience, many UMC churches are "inclusive" and have been for some years. Many, many folks who I know who are Methodist Scouters, who are friends of mine on FB, applauded the Oberfell decision as well as the BSA policy change.

If your unit is chartered by a Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod parish, life has just gotten more interesting. http://blogs.lcms.org/2015/lcms-statement-on-boy-scouts-of-america-policy-change

I suspect a number of conservative church bodies will instruct their parishes to drop Scouting, or to encourage them to the same.

This is trending. You can also find a version at scoutingnewsroom, but my isp is not friendly to that ip/domain. http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/2015/06/14/3768685_boy-scout-finds-eagle-application.html?rh=1 Gist of the story: Scout completes requirements before age 18. Unit screws up the paperwork. Eventually, a copy of the app is found. Submitted through Council to National. National, under current Advancement policy, decides the breakdown is on the adult side of matters, not the youth. National authorizes an EBOR. Old Scouter earns Eagle.

Is There A Way To Edit Something After The Fact?
John-in-KC replied to skeptic's topic in Forum Support & Announcements
Scouter-TERRY provides this to the Scouting community as his gift to Scouters. Bad Wolf's comment below nails it. -

@@qwazse, I didn't want old information being discussed. The definition has continued to evolve!

This is an eight year old thread ( I ought to know, I was just a member when I started it). The 2007 version of 33008 has been superceded at least 4 times. So, I'm going to thank people, and ask them to look at current policy before starting a new thread on the meaning of active. Remember, though: Units, Districts and Councils have no authority to add to or take from the National Requirments.
