  1. I think what @Mrjeffmay be hinting at is that if you disagree with some elements of a DE&I initiative and voice your concerns in a tactful manner, you still risk being labeled the "worst type of person imaginable." There is no room for discourse in some public spaces and I find that scary. As a moderate conservative myself, I share some of his concerns (and wouldn't mind engaging in productive discussion around the others). Ultimately, it probably behooves us all to be 10% kinder and 10% more understanding (and maybe to love one another ... where have I heard that before? 😉) Even

  2. Yes, I saw the hint where it says to be registered in the position you are performing in the unit. So, if a Cubmaster comes on a troop campout, they can't be a Cubmaster, but man, it is very vague.

  3. Thank you, @InquisitiveScouter and @RememberSchiff for this! Son created an account and posted here. Let him know if the link should be posted in a different spot. I guess I need to be careful now what I say, since he'll be able to read this forum. 🤣

  5. Well, now I am crazy, I thought I saw it in the G2SS or FAQ. But, I thought it wasn't just rumored, but rolled out. Now, I don't know.

  6. Once upon a time I knew exactly what a DE did, because I was one. And depending upon time of year, we did a lot more than 40 hours, not including on-call time. One of my buddies did the calculations, if we were not exempt, we would be making less than the minimum wage of the time. However, I am clueless today. All I can think is driving places as the district sizes in my neck of the woods increased dramatically. My district went from 2 counties, to 7 counties overnite. Back in the day, the focus was MONEY, MEMBERSHIP MANPOWER, and the order of importance depended upon the SE, and

  8. They are now saying you need to be registered with the unit, at a minimum, not just registered.

  9. Correct. The FAQ here is helpful on what positions are permissible: Youth Protection and Barriers to Abuse FAQs | Boy Scouts of America (scouting.org)

  10. And, to bring this one up to date, the parent now needs to be a Registered Adult to camp with the Troop, correct?

  11. @ScoutingMama4, welcome! This is totally acceptable. However, I believe she would need to get the Proposal approved by the Venturing Crew Unit Leader and Committee Chair. Where is she in the process? If her proposal has already been approved in the Troop, she should call the Council or District rep who signed it. (Hopefully this will be the District Advancement Chair or designee...) I recommend she seek guidance from them first, then get back to the Venturing Crew signatures on the proposal, if that is the way she is advised to go.

  12. Actually, @swilliams, it would be ideal if your Scout posted it here, instead of you doing it for him. 😜

  13. Yes. Posting GoFundME or other fundraising events for Scouts/Scouting has previously occurred on this forum.

  15. Areas of concern "All camping is mandatory" is not normal and extreme. I'm hoping it's a misunderstanding. Or, the context is misunderstood. Units can have "reasonable" attendance standards for attendance (See BSA Guide To Advancement). Mandatory and 100% are not reasonable. Normal It is normal to enthusiastically encourage camping / outings. Involvement is a huge predictor of future success. Camping within three weeks of joining is NOT unusual at all. In fact, it's fairly normal. We often had scouts who's first meeting would be March 1st to March 7th. Th

  16. Based on the initial question about mandatory participation, you answered the question by asking it. If you have to wonder about a unit, avoid it. They should be selling their program to you, so you join their unit. As a commissioner, I had to get involved with a unit that decided to have "try outs" by performing woodcraft-type skills. Imagine that, try outs to join where you would learn such things. I don't know of any unit that has 100% participation by scouts in every event. It is really unimaginable. If that unit has that as an enforced guideline, that is one unit that needs h

  17. Welcome to the forum. Having all camping be "mandatory" is very unusual, and I'm not even sure how a troop could go about enforcing it. Many troops have minimum attendance requirements for rank advancement, but rank advancement itself is entirely up to the scout and whether he or she wants to do scouting that way. EDIT: I just reread your post, and I think I misread your primary concern ---I need more coffee. If your concern is being able to participate in the campout yourself, every scouting activity is open to observation by parents at all times. Observing and participating may
