  1. This concept being a major piece of the Scouts BSA program is, or should be, a given. BSA was integral from the start of the the Conservation awareness in the early teens. Its primary U.S. founders were all outdoor and nature supporters, though some had odd ideas in relation to today. Seton particularly was a proponent of much of the modern leanings, and I suspect if he were alive today would be on the more radical side of the movements. And even Roosevelt, it seems to me, had a direction change in his approach to nature and the natural resources. Burroughs and Hornaday also supported BSA

  3. In my experience they are the worst; especially people who end up as a committee chair for too long. God complex is an understatement.

  4. I see what both of you are saying here. What I would like to point out is that my council absorbed several other councils and as it turns out we had a substantial liability during the settlement; however, as the story goes, of all the councils merged to make this current council, one of them had almost no issues because they were following the rules and enforcing the standards. What I would like to see is this summary really broken down to the council that existed in that time. So for example if the "modern council" has 100 claims, I would like to see a sub section that shows "Old council

  5. Dec 19, 2023 from NBC news: I wish they had reused the name Civilian Conservation Corps and had a bipartisan Congressional committee propose it. I fear this will become another political football. "After facing setbacks in Congress, the Biden administration has unlocked funding to launch its American Climate Corps, a new federal program that looks to employ thousands of young Americans in the clean energy, conservation and climate resilience sectors.... The new corps will be led across a partnership of federal agencies: the departments of Commerce, Interior, Agriculture, Labor and E

  7. One could argue that reducing CO2 is very much in line with leave no trace and the outdoor code.

  8. History is personal and impersonal. Ice ages and warm periods have been documented both within the fossil record and in recent memory. Here in Maryland USA, I can remember winters with snow drifts taller than my dad's head. Made good tunnels for the well wrapped Cub Scout. Photoes in the magazine of storms that closed the rail road systems. The last few years have been noticably less snowy. Last year, it hardly made sense to put the plow on the front of my son's truck. Do ICE contribute to the climate ? Look to London's coal smoke clouds, Los Angeles' smog. Certainly. Do they contr

  9. I was under the impression that these international Scouting organizations (which I know relatively little about) concentrated on assisting the Scouting organization in countries around world and did not engage in political and policy advocacy. I took a three-minute peek at their web site and see mention of political and policy matters on which countries would take varying positions. Does anyone know if the BSA has granted this organization authority to adopt and express policy positions on behalf of the BSA and its members?

  10. What is the right amount of global heat? What is the goal of this effort? Is it to create some kind of climate stasis? What is an "acceptable amount" of climate change? (Because, it has changed across the eons...) 11. Microsleeping... For sleepy scouters, nodding off can be inconvenient—say, during a scoutmaster conference—or even downright dangerous, say while sitting around a campfire. ... "But for Antarctica’s nesting chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarcticus), these seconds long bits of shuteye known as “microsleeps” may help them survive. These mininaps net the birds about 11 hours of sleep per day, potentially offering them a way to rest while remaining vigilant over their eggs and chicks, researchers report today in Science. The work could shine a light on how different animals adap

  12. In April 2018 I posted about getting a Scouters paycheck when I watched one of 'my' boys, as Meteu, drape an ordeal sash over his younger brothers shoulder, as his older brother, the head eleongomat, looked on, smiling. I just watched the same middle brother ( who is the best ceremonalist I've ever seen) welcome his younger brother into the circle of the Vigil, in our very secluded ceremony ring, as once again the older brother stood by trying to look serious, but the smile kept breaking thru. Some scouts who were past members of our ceremories team, drove or flew hundreds of miles to

  13. A new inspection team will check if local UK Scout groups are following national policies, while an independent panel of abuse survivors will make sure victims get the right support and counseling. The Scout Association says the £2 membership fee increase will help pay for what it calls a new UK assurance function. While half of the money raised will be used to invest in the new safeguarding measures, the other half will cover rising operating costs. It comes after the survivors' campaign Yours in Scouting was highlighted by a BBC investigation. More at source: https://www.
