  1. Couple of thoughts as a MBC- Backpack, snowshoe, or cross-country ski for at least 4 miles. To me this would require the Scout to hike a minimum of 4 miles total and stay the night carrying everything they need for that experience. Doesn't say anything about a tent, want to sleep outside, great. I would expect food, water, 10 essentials, sleeping materials, toiletries, etc to be carried for the duration of the trip. Out and back would only require 2 miles in and 2 miles out to meet this requirement. Plan and carry out an overnight snow camping experience. Is there snow on the

  4. Talking about janky cheap medals in an earlier thread, this medal is most certainly not!! We just had 2 adults and 2 scouts earn this beauty! The thing is weighty! To earn this the Scouts (and Adults) had to earn 4 separate local High Adventure Awards. As part of that they had to complete: A 2 (or more) backpack to the summit of Mt San Gorgonio (11,503 ft) A 2 (or more) backpack to the summit of Mt San Bernardino (10.649 ft) A 2 (or more) backpack to the summit of Mt San Jacinto (10,834 ft) A day hike to the summit of Mt Antonio (aka Mt Baldy) (10,064 ft)

  5. I figured NAM was a scaled up version of a Roundtable when the Council Key 3 come and cherry pick some numbers and stats and explain to us how great things are.

  6. Our Scout Shop told us that National had pulled back all remaining supplies and destroyed them. Not sure if that is true. It's an absolute shame if they discontinue this award, the achievements a Scout needs to get to earn it are absolutely core to the mission of Scouting. I would way prefer to see a Scout earn this than every merit badge.

  7. I have not been to a NAM, but I have been to an ALL HANDS conference, which every BSA professional was required to attend. It was a mix of information sessions, speakers, and socializing. While they did give everyone a copy of the scripts used by the presenters for all session, some presenters had a lot experience on the topics and was able to give info beyond the script in Q&A sessions. Some presenters strictly followed the scripts they were given. In today's age of technology, it may have been better to do it as a teleconference and recordings..

  8. I agree completely. It's good to explore various skills, but we scouts are primarily about being in and connecting to the outdoors. NSO awards and badges should reflect this. We're only secondarily overachievers 😉

  9. May I suggest this alteration? Scouting - An amazing program that is successful because of the amazing volunteers in units nationwide, DESPITE the best efforts of National. When it comes to the price increases at the last minute, Packs had it toughest in my neck of the woods because of round ups.

  10. I actually would recommend against it. First and foremost, it states as much in the Guide to Awards and Insignia (which one would think would be enough to settle the discussion here and now, though some people would rather be permissive than be correct). Anyway, Den chiefs' places in their respective dens are symbolized by their den chief cords; the Wolf and Bear chiefs wear blue and gold cords, while the Webelos cords add a red braid. That should be enough of an identifier for them, though some Scouts (and leaders) have to be taught the concept of "less is more." The reasoning behind it
