  1. I thought it useful to go back to the Guide to Advancement.

  2. If anyone ever asks you what it takes to be a good Patrol Leader, you should show them this page from Green Bar Bill's 1929 Handbook for Patrol Leaders.

  3. But then would they also ask other Eagle candidates about their pre-marital sexual relationships? Seems like this was only an issue because it was so obviously public. If it had been a private sin of the same nature (on-going physical relationship with another person), would they have even asked or much cared? Does the SM discuss pre-marital activity with all their scouts as part of their SMC? I don't have an issue with it as long as it is consistently applied. One might even suggest that the adult leaders follow the same example.

  4. Not to derail a thread, but isn't that sort of the reasoning (groups gone rogue) given as one of the reasons for the change to allow girls into the Cubs and Boy Scouts? Also the move toward family scouting emphasis "so many were doing it anyway, may as well make it official". That seems to be the way to effect change now, just go do it and likely rather than make waves it will be codified

  5. I have to agree with @SR540Beaver here. my son has done these ceremonies for the past two years, and is disappointed in the change. He's also disappointed in the poor scripts that have been provided as well. However, he respects that they have been told what they have been told, and his choice is either comply or just don't participate in them at all. His lodge seems intent on offering the new format, but I doubt he'll volunteer for them.

  6. So you're going to use the, "if a patrol wants to go play laser tag as a bunch of friends in street clothes, then it isn't Scouts going against the G2SS" defense even when the patrol planned it at a meeting? OA ceremonialists need to do the honorable thing and follow the national rules rather than go rogue.

  7. When our troop dealt with a tragedy like this ... In the days following, we locked out the media. The family directed the newspaper reporter to me -- and I made no mention of finances, and the pastor ran interference at the funeral. We did not want our youth to have to face cameras at such a vulnerable time. 1. We quickly identified a way to donate to the council on behalf of the family for camperships in the deceased name. We made that pathway known to scouters. I believe it was also in the obituary. 2. Funds for funeral expenses and other memorials went directly to the family.

  8. Just for clarification. It was council members plus volunteers who conducted the EBoR. The gentleman who brought the paper to be signed was one of the members on my son's board, and there was an apology made for causing him anxiety and stress.

  9. Good grief! It's Eagle rank in Boy Scouts. He's not applying to be a priest. it's amazing how many Christians forget that we're all sinners and Jesus intentionally associated with people society cast out as sinners.

  10. I'm of the opinion that this candidate failed on the Scout Motto: 'Be Prepared'.
