  1. One of the problems is the BSA *does* just hand out mBs just for showing up at mb colleges and summer camps.

  2. I think someone at the local council, whether the pack and/or troop, or the council screwed up. It appears that the Scout has been registered as a Cub Scout all this time, and as a result ineligible for Boy Scout awards. I wonder why the council has not caught the problem earlier. Realistically he can stay a Boy Scout past his 18th birthday with the required paperwork. As stated previously, I've seen a 44 year old BOY (emphasis) Scout who not only had Down's Syndrome, but also legally blind earn his Eagle. Gut feeling: National and Local Council will review the situation to find ou

  3. From experience girls typically look after themselves when it comes to periods. We keep a supply of sanitary towels in our HQ, all the girls know where they are if they need one. We always take a supply to camp. Again it's part of the arrival briefing to tell the girls where they are. Very occassionally one of them vanishes, presumably a girl who gets caught out and goes to grab one. I only recall one occassion where a girl has actually asked for one. The conversation went broadly, Scout - "I need a sanitary towel Skip, where are they?" Me - "Store room, middle shelf, next to th

  4. I'd make sure you know the BSA YPT rules here. But as you're den leader for a den of just your daughter, maybe those rules are a bit different. Me - I'd focus on figuring out how to build a den around your daughter. I'm worried your den of one will turn into a troop of one in a year. If you need to jump packs, rally more help on recruiting, or something else - I think you need to be asking those questions. My goal would be a patrol of 10 girls your daughters age in a year.

  5. It's not a topic for a troop meeting, but us male Scouters probably ought to get used to hearing about it. It's just a normal part of life. I do imagine the girls would be more comfortable talking with a female, but we should be careful to not make them feel awkward about it. Interesting take on the skorts though - never thought about that. I'm 100% behind uniform updates that are thought out and practical. With that in mind skorts with pockets now make sense to me. I'm curious to see what the 11-18 year old uniform updates will bring.

  6. We had a young man with pretty severe Downs become an Eagle scout a while back. Lots of paperwork to get the right dispensations. I have to say I was happy witth the outcome but really disappointed with some of the reactions of some of my fellow scouters outside the troop. Best guess, the local guys got out over their skis with their approvals, and didn't give the family a realistic view of the possible obstacles they could encounter. That National got involved before all the paperwork was submitted would indicate someone locally was unhappy and made a complaint over the heads of t

  7. @Hawkwin, You do have a female ADL working with you? According to the info put out by national, a girls' den needs one registered, YPT female over 21 in addition to a second person.

  8. And you are not unique to a lot of men....which is exactly why a woman has to be at a campsite when girls are there.

  9. Actually, I'm all for the skorts....just wish they had plentiful pockets!!! They do offer a bit more modesty for the older girls, since shorts can often be more form-fitting in the rear for some girls. And whether its good or bad, girls changing bodies have more difficulty fitting clothes. Boys have it lucky....find shorts with the right waist measurements, and you are good to go. My daughter was trying out uniform pants in August last year....had to try three sizes just to get her waist and hips to fit properly. ...and she was just entering 6th grade. Skorts can be designed to be more fo

  10. Our council has interpreted the rule as March 15 is the deadline as all girls added now should rank advance by the end of May. Other councils have interpreted the rule as the last date early adopters can start.

  11. Once the MBC signs off, the MB is earned. There is a narrow exception in the Guide to Advancement for impossibility. See GTA 7.0.4.7. So long as you know you completed the MB as written, you shouldn’t have to worry about the predisposition of some parents.
