  1. Eagle 1984 Are you the COR? If you are not you cannot remove him. I think you should sit down I find out what his belief is, and if he does not beleive in a higher being, you need to tell your COR and the DE.
  2. The troop my son is a cook over open fires, only troop. Now this is a good thing, I think, taken to an extreme. I do not like seeing troops getting specialized. I think that a troop should offer many different variations of camping, Low Impact, Dutch Ovens, No pans, cooking on different types of stoves. This way the scouts would not get bored with the same old thing every month and broadens their experiences. When the scouts go on a High Adventure trip, they usually need to be trained on how to camp without a trailer nearby with all of the gear.
  3. Fuzzy, I like the way you think! 1. All merit Badge Instructors will be told that the goal is not to get the badge done, but to fulfil as many requirements as possible in the given time. And the new Merit Badge police will be monitoring each weeks advancements, to make sure that requirements are not being rubber-stamped. The goal for merit badge classes are to have fun and fulfil some requirements. 2. Mini high adventures will be available during summer camp. a. A 3 day of hiking on horses. b. A 3 day low impact hiking and camping c. A 3 day kayak camping trip. 2. A Trail to First Class program that is fun and well done (purcelce is handling this one) 3. Plenty of open swim and boating time. This will mean we will have to open up another swim area. 4. Troops will have the options to eat in the dining hall or cook at there campsites. Or they can split it one half at campsite and one half in the dinning hall. 5. A prize will be given not for the cleanest campsite, but for happiest troop. 6. Campsite will be setup more along the lines of patrols sites. 7. Adults that are unhappy on do not get it (sorry eamonn could not resist) will be given the infamous raspberry award.
  4. Eamonn No apology necessary. I thought it was a good discussion. And, Yes, I may be a pompus twit! I have been called that before!
  5. Is a Boy Scout Troop permitted to go camping with only female adult leaders? YES Or do the female adults make it a coed activity meaning that at least one male leader is needed. NO The only place I remember GTSS discussing female leaders is having separate sleeping quarters for female leaders.
  6. BW has said what I was thinking probably better than I will but I will try anyway. I will try to give you some examples of some issues I have seen and discussed on this forum. Uniforms, in my experience the majority of the leaders in my neck of the woods believe a uniform is what ever they want it to be. Class A uniform, I keep asking people where I can find what a Class A uniform is, and most unit well tell you or have it in the troop bylaws. I keep asking them would it not be easier to look in the scout book, and call it what the BSA calls it. Merit Badges, making scouts do requirements for merit badges multiple times, because the counselor wanted to make sure he did do it. Blue cards are only good for a year. All work done before will have to be redone. Leaders selected by the charter organization, I have been involved with 2 packs and 2 troops, the CO wanted nothing to do with the troop or pack. I say that most CO do not pick the leaders, the leaders are the ones that steps forward to do the job correctly or incorrectly. Rubber stamping advancements or adding requirements for the advancement. Not allowing the scouts to be the leaders. And so on and so on and so on Now for the why, these need to be addressed. Lest say 2 scouts from a troop that does not follow the methods, grow up have a family and when there son or sons go into scouts, they had a great time in scouts (a great time does not mean they learned anything from the program) so they become leaders and run the program just like their SM or DL ran it. Now you have 2 troops not following the BSA program. And this is just from one unit, multiple this be all the units out there and what do you have? I really believe that Scout leaders are doing what believe is the correct way. To fix these issues, training needs to be more direct. Telling how a troop or pack or den will be ran not hinting at certain things. I believe the training is to wishy washy. COR should also have some sort of training or overview to attend so that they know what is expected of them. My posts seem to really come off very negative, I do not mean from them to be as negative as they come out, but I do not want to beat around the bush either. I really believe in the BSA and I only want to keep it on the right track.
  7. I still say that having 500,000 boys doing scouting correctly is better than 1,000,000 boys doing scouting incorrectly (not following the BSA program). And that is "it". If you want me to be more specific just let me know.
  8. There is at least one glaring error in that newspaper clipping that I see. I wonder how much of it is true? As someone pointed out a few days ago on this forum, lets wait until we get the facts. Newspaper should be taken with a grain of salt.
  9. A better option IMO, would to have some type of test, to see if the leaders "get it". If not than remove them from the BSA.
  10. EagleinKY I did not ask if anyone questioned it. I asked if you have told the scouts of there rights. If you are going to deny them the badge they deserve to be told that there are ways to question the refusal.
  11. EagleINKY Same question for you. Do you also tell the scouts that they can contest this through the council? Which would be the correct thing to do, wouldn't it? A SM is trustworthy.
  12. Bug Juice in this neck of the woods is Kool-Aid. Perferablly in a large container that is keep being added to, with different flavors.
  13. Eagle69 Do you also tell the scouts that they can contest this through the council? Which would be the correct thing to do, wouldn't it?
  14. Congratulations! BUT I really think you should be celebrating with Bug Juice and a Dutch Oven Cobbler.
  15. My bad, I assumed it was a cell phone, even though I read the acrticle. I guess even my size 13s would not be big enough for a pay phone! And no I would never do that. Even though I may want to with some people on cell phones.(This message has been edited by dan)
  16. The SPL, ASPLs, QM, and 1 instructor are staffers for JLTC. The other instructors have been to JLTC. IMO the instructors do not need to be shown how to teach but given the opportunity to do it. Currently the PLC is planning the big events such as when and what theme a campout will be, and an event for the meetings such as First Aid, Winter Survival but it is not be taken to the next level and have a written agenda for the meetings or campouts. Currently training is being done by older scouts who where handy to be asked to do it a day or 2 before the meeting. Which really upsets Instructors. My other goal is to have the scouts speak up and say, hey thats my job! And to be there to back them up. It is a culture thing, when you hear a 14 year old scout say thats the way we have all which done it! I have made some headway by talking to the leaders about JLTC and comparing it to the troop and why they did what they did at JLTC. I was hoping to start this now, elections are coming up in Feb. so I would really have to wait until the new SPL is elected to do the campout planning program. Do you think I could start this with the current SPL and guide him through setting up an agenda for the PLC, to create an agenda for a troop meeting? My goals First Agendas Second POR utilized Third Hands on activities at meetings I have more! Which you will be hearing about if I can get these 2 done.
  17. Great we have covered First Aid, Knots, Totin Chip! How about fire building?
  18. There where 4 great ideas on teaching first aid in the show thread. Very hands on and some over the top which keeps boys coming back for more. I can just hear some of the scouts after the meeting saying, I cannot wait until I get to be the victim, or that was just so cool, did you see those burns! So what other great ideas do you guys have for meetings and or campouts. Please be as specific as you can.
  19. My sons troop is a sit and listen troop. I am working on changing this, I am the ASM in charge of troop meetings, this is a new position for me and the troop. I am having trouble balancing the boy lead versus showing them on how to run a good fun meeting. The scouts in the troop have never been trained to do hands on meetings, and who should be doing the training, a older scout normally does the training or presentation instead of a instructor. I think that we (adult leaders) need to train (show, do) the leaders (boy) how to put on a good meeting, in the beginning, I feel that I should have a lot of involvement, but once they see and understand what a good meeting should be like, they will be able to produce a good program (the scouts that will be the next in the leadership position will have seen what a good meeting should be like and less hand on involvement by the adult leaders will be needed). Bottom line, I am planning on going in and take the Bull by the horns, to get the meetings to be more hands on and boy run. MAKING the PLC create agendas, assigning instructors tasks for the meetings, and so on. Should I push the changes or do I sit back and slowing try to get things changed, so as not to damage the boy lead concept that the troop already has? All scouts in leadership positions have been through JLT, we have another one scheduled (I hope this month, it keeps getting pushed back).
  20. I would have taken the phone away from "dad" and ground it underneath the heel of my shoe.
  21. Fuzzy Bear Dan? I am staying out of this one! I think you mean Dave. Dan
