  1. Never can have too many Texans!!! Come sit a spell, it's not quiet as windy over here! Great to have ya! Carol
  2. I am doing an unofficial poll of different councils day camp... How long? - 3 days for ours 9am to 3pm How much? - $30 if you reg. early/$40 for late fee (no t-shirt for late reg.) What act.? - swimming, BBs, archery, crafts, games Lunch provided? - no (don't like it but oh well) Just wondering about what everyone else does, good ideas, bad ideas, new ideas, etc. Carol
  3. I believe we should honor the U.S. flag and that it should be protected by whatever means the government sees fit. JMHO. Carol
  4. I agree with ASM59, get your training behind you then perhaps either committee member or assistant Tiger den leader. The later may not be official but if it were my Tiger den I would not turn you down as there are lots of things you could be doing while I focused on the boys i.e. paperwork, etc. Carol
  5. I never had a father, but my grandfather more than made up for that. I no longer have him with me, but I know he's looking down from that wonderful place we call heaven. So I send this out to all you men that have chosen to be not a father but a 'DAD'... HAPPY FATHER'S DAY! May you have a day of peace and quiet and relaxation (or at least a few minutes )! Carol
  6. In our pack it is optional and the families purchase them on their own. My son's has a few old patches that his grandfather gave him and then all his own. He rarely wears it though.
  7. In my Wolf den last year... I did ask them to bring them to every meeting. What we did in the meeting I signed. When it got close to the end of the year I took the books and put a sticky note on requirement pages that could be finished by the next week in the home. BTW I did ALOT of my planning based on requirements out of the book. Not all, but lets face it, if I hadn't they probably would not have gotten completed. Every requirement was signed off by the parent (Akela) or myself. I plan on doing our Bear year the same way. Carol
  8. I love the Hummer 2 commercial with the song "Happy Jack" by The Who. I can groove all night to that song! Carol
  9. Welcome, it sounds like your hands are full at home. Just remember to keep it all in perspective and have lots of fun! Carol
  10. This is copied from www.scouting.org "The participant survey, BSA after-action report, and a similar U.S. Army after-action report will become the catalyst to develop a plan of action for the 2010 National Scout Jamboree." Hope that helps. God willing my husband, our son and his grandfather will all be going with our troop. Carol
  11. I would never turn away someone that wanted to help. It mainly depends on the size of the den. If there is only 2 - 5 boys and you have 3-4 den leaders that is a different story. But like others have said there are MANY different positions in a pack that need volunteers. The main thing is register (then you will be covered), get basic training, and have fun. You can always go with your son to his den meetings and therefore will see how much help is needed or not then you will know whether you should look into other areas that might need to be filled. THERE'S ALWAYS ROOM FOR MORE VOLUNTEE
  12. To me, doing it the way EagleinKy describes it, would deminish the importance of the requirements. I mean how much can they retain if they are rushing to get them done in one or two nights? It may take us a month but my boys were still able to recite the Law of the Pack and the Promise 6 months later. JMHO, Carol
  13. When I started the Wolf den I had only one returning boy from Tigers (my son) who had earned his Bobcat before the summer. I made up Bobcat work. It was fill in the blanks, decoding, had practice drills (handshake, salute) and other things of that nature. I simply made them up on the computer and we worked on them each meeting. By the next pack meeting all my boys had completed the requirements. Carol
  14. Seattle Pioneer, see my reply to your thread Recruiting New Cubs Part I. Carol
  15. Seattle Pioneer, you asked about our sign up carnival on another post but I'll answer you here. First I'll give you a little background. We are a town of about 6000. We have only one elementary school. Our newspaper comes out 3 times a week. In the past we had simply held sign up at the school in the evening time. That was it, boys running around or sitting around bored, parents sat thru us trying to tell them specifics about the program and of course the dreaded cost, so on and so forth. I had the idea that we needed to keep the boys entertained while the parents did the 'nece
  16. We had our sign-up 'carnival' last weekend. We recruited... 6 tigers (with 1 more to sign up within the next month) 1 wolf (another 2 to sign up within next month) 0 bear (1 is supposed to sign up) 1 WebI 0 WebII That brings our total up to 32 (poss 36)! Yeah!! Carol P.S. We didn't have any WebII this year so therefore have not lost any.
  17. OK, I guess I'll post about the only joke I know... Two little rabbits were in the carrot patch eating. First rabbit says "This carrot sure tastes pithy". Second rabbit says "That's cause I just pithed on it". I never said it was a good joke... Carol
  18. I too am opposed to allowing girls into BSA. Gosh what would you call it then? And by the way I am a mother of 2 girls as well as 2 boys. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Just my cent and a half!! (I'm cheap) Carol
  19. Just wanted to know how many others are planning on having den meetings during the summer. If so... 1.How often? I am going to do every other week 2.What will you do (requirements or fun stuff)? we will do fun stuff ie. belt loops/pins 3.What is your rank? We will be Bears (grooooooooowl) I am a firm believer in 'year round' scouting. Just curious, Carol
  20. You and my husband would get along fabulously as he too loves to talk 'Scouting' 24/7. Anyway, welcome aboard from the great state of Texas! Carol
  21. I agree with WDleader. A boy must attend 1 pack planned activity per summer month. Our pack has at least 2 planned activities per month so that the boys have a better chance of earning the award. Not to mention keeping them involved during the summer. Carol
  22. This is not what you are looking for but here is what we did at last night's meeting which was our last regular meeting of the 'Wolf' year... played 3 of the games we have made or have played during the year talked about things we've learned talked about all the fun we've had and the most important... PIGGED out on chocolate sundaes (I don't know why they thought this was the best part of the meeting ) I am going to have 2 den meetings a month this summer, not to work on Bear work but perhaps beltloops/pins maybe go fishing, just fun stuff. I just wanted to party l
  23. And that just goes to show how much of an impact we can have on other human beings. Bob, I am glad for you. You obviously impacted this man and his family, in such a positive way that they have heralded you to all and while we do not do what we do to receive accolades, it is nice to be remembered in such a great way. My hat is off to you sir. Carol
  24. SeattlePioneer, are you happy with anything dealing with Scouts? It seems like almost all of your posts have been on the negative side. I hope you find some happiness during your work within Scouting and project that to those you are around. Carol
  25. 14 correct. I like the way they set it up and explain all the answers.
